The first issue appeared on June 19,<br \/>\n1909. In February, 1910, when he left for Chandernagore, he requested Sister<br \/>\nNivedita to conduct the journal. But after eight more issues, on April 2, 1910,<br \/>\nthe <i>Karmayogin<\/i> came to a stop. Some of the editorials in the last few<br \/>\nissues from February 12 onwards seem to us, however, to have been Sri<br \/>\nAurobindo&#8217;s. Probably they were written earlier and left behind in the office.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\nIn his editorials in this journal Sri Aurobindo commented on the political and<br \/>\nother significant events of the time. Besides these he published some<br \/>\ntranslations of the Upanishads, a few of his poems and a number of articles on<br \/>\nphilosophical subjects, Yoga, Literature, National Education, the Spirit of<br \/>\nIndian Nationalism, etc.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\nThe present volume contains only the political writings and public speeches of<br \/>\nSri Aurobindo after May 1909. They are reproduced exactly as they were<br \/>\noriginally published from week to week. The translations, poems and writings on<br \/>\nnon-political subjects are&#8217; included in their respective volumes.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\nA few articles from this weekly were first brought out in book-form as T<font size=\"2\">HE<br \/>\n<\/font>I<font size=\"2\">DEAL OF THE <\/font>K<font size=\"2\">ARMAYOGIN <\/font>in<br \/>\n1918. The fourth edition published in 1937 was revised.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\nA letter Sri Aurobindo published in the <i>Bengalee<\/i>, a prominent journal of<br \/>\nthose days, is given at the beginning of this volume in view of its significance<br \/>\nand historical importance.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\nTwo of his speeches found recently in the files of the Government of Bengal Home<br \/>\nDepartment have been reproduced here in Appendix II for the first time.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\nDr. Annie Besant asked for Sri Aurobindo&#8217;s opinion on the Montague-Chelmsford<br \/>\nReforms Proposals announced at the end of the First World War.
