\nSri Aurobindo contributed two series of articles to this
\nnewspaper, which was edited by his Cambridge friend
\nK. G. Deshpande. New Lamps for Old<\/i> appeared in nine
\ninstalments from August 7, 1893 to March 5,’1894. This
\nseries was preceded by another political article, "India and
\nthe British Parliament" (June 26, 1893). The second series, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee<\/i>, written after the passing of the
\nBengali writer, appeared in seven instalments from July 16
\nto August 27, 1894.<\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nA revolutionary journal started by Sri Aurobindo’s
\nbrother Barindra and others in March 1906. Sri Aurobindo
\nwrote articles for some of the earlier issues of the paper,
\nand always exercised general control over it. It ceased
\npublication in May 1908.<\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nA newspaper started on August 6, 1906 under the editorship of Bepin Chandra Pal. Sri Aurobindo became joint
\neditor of the paper and before the end of 1906 assumed
\nfull control of its policy. He wrote many of its editorials
\nand leading articles, and also some planned series including The Doctrine of Passive Resistance<\/i>. It ceased publication
\nin October 1908, six months after Sri Aurobindo was
\nimprisoned in the Alipore ‘Bomb Case. A weekly edition
\nof Bande Mataram<\/i> was published from June 1907 to
\nSeptember 1908, in which editorials and articles from
\nthe daily edition were reprinted. The play Perseus the
\nDeliverer<\/i> and the translation Vidula<\/i> first appeared in this
\nweekly edition.<\/p>\n

\n"A Weekly Review of National Religion, Literature,
\nScience, Philosophy, etc." Started on June 15, 1909 by Sri
\nAurobindo, who wrote practically all of its articles and editorial comments, and published in it a number of his poems
\nand translations. When he left for Chandernagore in
\nFebruary 1910, he put the journal into the hands of Sister
\nNivedita. Writings by him continued to appear in it until
\nit ceased publication on March 26, 1910.<\/p>\n

\nStarted on August 23, 1909 under the editorship of
\nSri Aurobindo, who wrote most of its articles and editorial
\ncomments himself. His connection with the journal ended
\nwhen he left for Chandernagore in February 1910. Its last

\nA philosophical review started by Sri Aurobindo on
\nAugust 15, 1914 and continued without interruption until
\nJanuary 1921. The following declaration appeared on the
\ninside cover page of each issue:<\/p>\n

\nThe Arya<\/i> is a Review of pure philosophy.
\nThe object which it has set before itself is twofold:\u2014<\/p>\n

\n1. A systematic study of the highest problems of existence;<\/p>\n

\n2. The formation of a vast Synthesis of knowledge, harmonising the diverse
\nreligious traditions of humanity occidental as well as oriental. Its method will be
\nthat of a realism, at once rational and transcendental,
\n\u2014 a realism consisting in the unification of intellectual
\nand scientific disciplines with those of intuitive
\nexperience. This Review will also serve as an organ for
\nthe various groups and societies founded on its
\ninspiration.<\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nThe Review will publish:\u2014
\nSynthetic studies in speculative Philosophy.
\nTranslations and commentaries of ancient texts.
\nStudies in Comparative Religion. Practical methods of inner culture and self
\ndevelopment.<\/p>\n

\nIn the Arya<\/i> appeared serially most of Sri Aurobindo’s
\nimportant prose writings: The Life Divine, The Synthesis of
\nYoga, The Secret of the Veda, Essays on the Gita, The Human
\nCycle, The Ideal of Human Unity, The Future Poetry<\/i> (all of
\nwhich were published later in book form, many in revised
\neditions), as well as other series and separate essays.<\/p>\n

\nPublished by the Prabartak Samgha, a group working under
\nthe inspiration of Sri Aurobindo. Its first issue came out
\non August 15, 1920 with a contribution "Ourselves" by
\nSri Aurobindo. In later issues it published several articles,
\npoems etc. by Sri Aurobindo, many of which had been
\nwritten in 1909 and 1910 and intended for publication in the Karmayogin<\/i>. Since 1915 the Prabartak Samgha has brought
\nout a Bengali monthly, Prabartak<\/i>. Sri Aurobindo’s "Jagannather Rath" first appeared in this journal in 1918.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table><\/div>\n

\nSri Aurobindo occasionally contributed essays, poems etc. to periodicals other
\nthan those listed above including The Modern Review<\/i> (Calcutta), The Calcutta Re-
\nview, The Vedic Magazine<\/i> (Lahore), Shama’s <\/i>(Madras) and the Bengali reviews
\nSuprabhat<\/i> and Bharati<\/i>.<\/p>\n
