After his<br \/>\nreturn to India he began a serious study of the language with a view<br \/>\nto acquiring proficiency in reading, writing and speaking. During<br \/>\nhis stay at Baroda he wrote some poetry in Bengali, attempting even<br \/>\na long poem called &quot;Usha-Haran Kabya&quot;. A few lines from this<br \/>\nwork are reproduced here for the first time.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\nIt is to this poem that his brother, Manmohan, himself a poet,<br \/>\nrefers in his letter to Rabindranath Tagore, dated October 24, 1894.<br \/>\nWe quote from it the following extract:<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&quot;Aurobindo is anxious to know what you think of his book of<br \/>\nverses<font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00b9<\/font>, but I have explained to him how busy you are just now; and<br \/>\nthat you will write later when you have a little more leisure to do justice to<br \/>\nhis book. I myself think that he is possessed of considerable powers of language and a real literary gift, \u2014 but is lacking in<br \/>\nstuff and matter, perhaps in warmth of temperament. But those<br \/>\npieces on Parnell<font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00b2<\/font>, consisting of fine philosophic reflection, show,<br \/>\nI think, that he might do great things. Unfortunately he has directed<br \/>\n(or rather misdirected) all his energies to writing Bengali poetry. He is at present engaged on an epic (inspired I believe by Michael<br \/>\nMadhusudan) on the subject of Usha and Aniruddha.&quot;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\nHe wrote several articles for the earlier issues of <i>Yugantar<\/i>, a<br \/>\nBengali revolutionary weekly started by his brother Barin and others<br \/>\nunder his guidance in March 1906. But not a single copy of this<br \/>\njournal has so far been traced.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\nThe earliest available Bengali writings of Sri Aurobindo besides<br \/>\n&quot;Usha-Haran Kabya&quot; are the three letters to his wife Mrinalini Devi<br \/>\nwritten between 1905 and 1907. These were produced as exhibits<br \/>\nin the Alipore Conspiracy Case in 1908, and having attracted public<br \/>\nnotice were reproduced in various journals and in book-form soon<br \/>\nafterwards.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\nAfter his acquittal in 1909 Sri Aurobindo started a Bengali weekly<br \/>\ncalled Dharma, and wrote most of the editorial comments and leading<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n____________________<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00b9<\/font><font size=\"2\">S<\/font><font size=\"1\">ONGS TO<br \/>\n<\/font><font size=\"2\">M<\/font><font size=\"1\">YRTILLA <\/font><font size=\"2\">published a year later, in 1895.<br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00b2<\/font><font size=\"2\"><i>Charles Stewart Parnell (1891<\/i>) and<br \/>\n<i>Hic facet <\/i>(Centenary Volume 5, pp. 15, 11). <\/font><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\narticles for it until his withdrawal to Chandernagore in February<br \/>\n1910. Most of these leading articles were published in book-form<br \/>\nin 1920 under the title D<font size=\"2\">HARMA <\/font>O J<font size=\"2\">ATIYATA<br \/>\n<\/font>by Prabartak Publishing<br \/>\nHouse, Chandernagore. In the present volume these articles are<br \/>\narranged under two sections, &quot;Dharma&quot; and &quot;Jatiyata&quot; (Religion<br \/>\nand Nationalism). The editorial comments from <i>Dharma <\/i>are published here in a separate section for the first time.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\nSome of the articles on the. Gita from <i>Dharma <\/i>were separately<br \/>\nbrought out in book-form in 1920 by the Prabartak Sangha under<br \/>\nthe title G<font size=\"2\">ITAR <\/font>B<font size=\"2\">HUMIKA<\/font>.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\nK<font size=\"2\">ARAKAHINI <\/font>(Tales of Prison Life) was first serialised in nine<br \/>\nparts in the Bengali monthly, <i>Suprabhat<\/i> in 1909-1910. This series<br \/>\nremained incomplete as Sri Aurobindo left Bengal in 1910. The essay,<br \/>\n&quot;Karagriha O Swadhinata&quot; (Prison and Freedom), was published<br \/>\nin <i>Bharati<\/i>, a Bengali journal, about the same time. K<font size=\"2\">ARAKAHINI<br \/>\n<\/font>came<br \/>\nout in book-form in 1920 from Chandernagore.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\nIn 1918 Sri Aurobindo wrote &quot;Jagannather Rath&quot; (the Chariot of<br \/>\nJagannath) for <i>Prabartak<\/i>, a journal published from Chandernagore.<br \/>\nThe article was published in book-form in 1921 along with some<br \/>\nothers under the same title by the Prabartak Publishing House.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\nHis letter to Barin, also known as &quot;Letter from Pondicherry&quot;,<br \/>\nwritten in 1920 was first published in <i>Narayana<\/i>, a journal edited by<br \/>\nC. R. Das. It was also issued as a booklet in the same year and later<br \/>\nalong with &quot;Letters to Mrinalini&quot; under the title S<font size=\"2\">RI<br \/>\n<\/font>A<font size=\"2\">UROBINDER <\/font>P<font size=\"2\">ATRA <\/font>(Letters of Sri Aurobindo) by the Prabartak Publishing<br \/>\nHouse.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\nA number of articles on the Vedas, Upanishads and other subjects found in Sri Aurobindo&#8217;s manuscripts were first put together<br \/>\nin book-form in 1955 under the title V<font size=\"2\">IVIDHA <\/font>R<font size=\"2\">ACHANA<\/font>.
