Foisoned the fields;<br \/>\nLonely and rich the forests and the swaying<br \/>\nOf those unnumbered tops affected men<br \/>\nWith thoughts to their vast music kin. Undammed <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">The<br \/>\nvirgin rivers moved towards the sea,<br \/>\nAnd mountains yet unseen and peoples vague <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">Winged<br \/>\nyoung imagination like an eagle<br \/>\nTo strange beauty remote. And Ruru felt<br \/>\nThe sweetness of the early earth as sap<br \/>\nAll through him, and short life an aeon made<br \/>\nBy<i> <\/i>boundless possibility, and love,<br \/>\nSweetest of all unfathomable love,<br \/>\nA glory untired. As a bright bird comes flying <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">From<br \/>\nairy extravagance to his own home,<br \/>\nAnd breasts his mate, and feels her all his goal,<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\" align=\"center\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\"><br \/>\n<font size=\"2\">Page-231<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">So<br \/>\nfrom boon sunlight and the fresh chill wave <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">Which<br \/>\nswirled and lapped between the slumbering fields, <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">From<br \/>\nforest pools and wanderings mid leaves <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">Through<br \/>\nemerald ever-new discoveries,<br \/>\nMysterious hillsides ranged and buoyant-swift<br \/>\nRaces with our wild brothers in the meads,<br \/>\nCame Ruru back to the white-bosomed girl,<br \/>\nStrong-winged to pleasure. She all fresh and new<br \/>\nRose to him, and he plunged into her charm. <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">For<br \/>\nneither to her honey and poignancy <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">Artlessly<br \/>\ninterchanged, nor any limit<br \/>\nTo the sweet physical delight of her<br \/>\nHe found. Her eyes like deep and infinite wells <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">Lured<br \/>\nhis attracted soul, and her touch thrilled <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">Not<br \/>\nlightly, though so light; the joy prolonged <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">And<br \/>\nsweetness of the lingering of her lips<br \/>\nWas every time a nectar of surprise<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">To<br \/>\nher lover; her smooth-gleaming shoulder bared <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">In<br \/>\ndarkness of her hair showed jasmine-bright, <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">While<br \/>\nher kissed bosom by rich tumults stirred <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">Was<br \/>\na moved sea that rocked beneath his heart, <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">Then<br \/>\nwhen her lips had made him blind, soft siege <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">Of<br \/>\nall her unseen body to his rule<br \/>\nBetrayed the ravishing realm of her white limbs, <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">An<br \/>\nempire for the glory of a God.<br \/>\nHe knew not whether he loved most her smile, <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">Her<br \/>\ncauseless tears or little angers swift, <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">Whether<br \/>\nheld wet against him from the bath <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">Among<br \/>\nher kindred lotuses, her cheeks<br \/>\nSoft to his lips and dangerous happy breasts <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">That<br \/>\nvanquished all his strength with their desire, <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">Meeting<br \/>\nhis absence with her sudden face,<br \/>\nOr when the leaf-hid bird at night complained <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">Near<br \/>\ntheir wreathed arbour on the moonlit lake, <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">Sobbing<br \/>\ndelight ,out from her heart of bliss,<br \/>\nOr in his clasp of rapture laughing low<br \/>\nOf his close bosom bridal-glad and pleased<br \/>\nWith passion and this fiery play of love,<br \/>\nOr breaking off like one who thinks of grief, <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">Wonderful<br \/>\nmelancholy in her eyes<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\" align=\"center\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\"><br \/>\n<font size=\"2\">Page-232<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">Grown<br \/>\nliquid and with wayward sorrow large. <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">Thus<br \/>\nhe in her found a warm world of sweets, <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">And<br \/>\nlived of ecstasy secure, nor deemed<br \/>\nAny new hour could match. that early bliss.<br \/>\nBut Iove has joys for spirits born divine<br \/>\nMore bleeding-lovely than his thornless rose.<br \/>\nThat day he had left, while yet the east was dark, <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">Rising,<br \/>\nher bosom and into the river<br \/>\nSwan out, exulting in the sting and swift .<br \/>\nSharp-edged desire around his limbs, and sprang <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">Wet<br \/>\nto the bank, and streamed into the wood. <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">As<br \/>\na young horse upon the pastures glad<br \/>\nFeels greensward and the wind along his mane<br \/>\nAnd arches as he goes his neck, so went<br \/>\nIn an immense delight of youth the boy<br \/>\nAnd shook his locks, joy-crested. Boundlessly<br \/>\nHe revelled in swift air of life, a creature<br \/>\nOf wide and vigorous morning. Far he strayed<br \/>\nTempting for flower and fruit branches in heaven,<br \/>\nAnd plucked, and flung away, and brighter chose,<br \/>\nSeeking comparisons for her bloom; and followed<br \/>\nNew streams, and touched new trees, and felt slow beauty<br \/>\nAnd leafy secret change; for the damp leaves,<br \/>\nGrey-green at first, grew pallid with the light<br \/>\nAnd warmed with consciousness of sunshine near;<br \/>\nThen the whole daylight wandered in, and made <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">Hard<br \/>\ntracts of splendour, and enriched all hues. <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">But<br \/>\nwhen a happy sheltered heat he felt <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">And<br \/>\nheard contented voice of living things<br \/>\nHarmonious with the noon, he turned and swiftly<br \/>\nWent homeward yearning to <u>Priyumvada,<\/u><br \/>\nAnd near his home emerging from green leaves.<br \/>\nHe laughed towards the sun: &quot;O father Sun,\u201d <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">He<br \/>\ncried, &quot;how good it is to live, to love. <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">Surely<br \/>\nour joy shall never end, nor we<br \/>\nGrow old, but like bright rivers or pure winds<br \/>\nSweetly continue, or revive with flowers, <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">&quot;Or<br \/>\nlive at least as long as senseless trees.&quot; <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">He<br \/>\ndreamed, and said with a soft smile: &quot;Lo, she!<br \/>\nAnd she will turn from me with angry tears<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\" align=\"center\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\"><font size=\"2\">&nbsp;Page-233<\/font><font size=\"2\"><br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<div align=\"center\" class=\"MsoNormal\">\n  <span lang=\"EN-US\"><\/p>\n<hr align=\"center\" SIZE=\"2\" width=\"100%\">\n  <\/span>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">Her<br \/>\ndelicate face more beautiful than storm<br \/>\nOr rainy moonlight. I will follow her,<br \/>\nAnd soothe her heart with sovereign flatteries;<br \/>\nOr rather all tyranny exhaust and taste<br \/>\nThe beauty of her anger like a fruit,<br \/>\nVexing her soul with helplessness; then soften<br \/>\nEasily with quiet undenied demand<br \/>\nOf heart insisting upon heart; or else<br \/>\nWill reinvest her beauty bright with flowers,<br \/>\nOr with my hands her little feet persuade.<br \/>\nThen will her face be like a sudden dawn,<br \/>\nAnd flower compelled into reluctant smiles.&quot;<br \/>\nHe had not ceased when he beheld her. She,<br \/>\nTearing a jasmine bloom with waiting hands,<br \/>\nStood drooping, petulant, but heard at once<br \/>\nHis footsteps and before she was aware,<br \/>\nA sudden smile of exquisite delight<br \/>\nLeaped to her mouth, and a great blush of joy <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">Surprised<br \/>\nher cheeks. She for a moment stood <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">Beautiful<br \/>\nwith her love before she died;<br \/>\nAnd he laughed towards her. With a pitiful cry<br \/>\nShe paled; moaning, her stricken limbs collapsed.<br \/>\nBut petrified, in awful dumb surprise,<br \/>\nHe gazed; then waking with a bound was by her,<br \/>\nAll panic expectation. As he came,<br \/>\nHe saw a brilliant flash of coils evade<br \/>\nThe sunlight, and with hateful gorgeous hood<br \/>\nDarted into green safety, hissing, death.<br \/>\nVoiceless he sank beside her and stretched out<br \/>\nHis arms and desperately touched her face,<br \/>\nAs if to attract her soul to live, and sought <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:150%;margin-left:0cm;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">Beseeching<br \/>\nwith his hands her bosom. It is a companion<br \/>\nlegend to the story of Savitri but not being told with any poetic skill or<br \/>\nbeauty has remained generally unknown. I have attempted in this poem to bring it<br \/>\nout of its obscurity. For full success, however, it should have had a more<br \/>\nfaithfully Hindu colouring, but it was written a score of years ago [1899] when<br \/>\nI had not penetrated to the heart of the Indian idea and its traditions, and the<br \/>\nshadow of the Greek underworld<u> <\/u>and Tarta:rus with the sentiment of life<br \/>\nand love and death which hangs about them has got into the legendary framework<br \/>\nof the Indian Patala and hells.
