\nby Maya\u2019s fantasy of will<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

A
\nviolent miracle takes sudden birth,<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nreal grows one with the incredible.<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

In
\nthe control of her magician wand<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nsmall achieves things great, the base things grand.<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

This
\npuny creature would bestride the earth<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Even
\nas the immense colossus of the past.<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Napoleon\u2019s
\nmind was swift and bold and vast,<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

His
\nheart was calm and stormy like the sea,<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

His
\nwill dynamic in its grip and clasp.<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

His
\neye could hold a world within its grasp<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

And
\nsee the great and small things sovereignly.<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

A
\nmovement of enormous1<\/sup>depth
\nand scope<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

He
\nseized and gave cohesion2<\/sup>
\nto its hope.<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Far
\nother this creature of a nether clay,<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Void
\nof all grandeur, like a gnome at play,<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Iron
\nand mud his nature\u2019s mingled stuff,<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

A
\nlittle limited visionary brain<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Cunning
\nand skilful in its narrow vein,<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

A
\nsentimental egoist poor and rough,<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Whose
\nheart was never sweet and fresh and young,<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

A
\nheadlong spirit driven by hopes and fears,<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Intense
\nneurotic with his shouts and tears,<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Violent
\nand cruel, devil, child and brute,<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

This
\nscreaming orator with his strident tongue,<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nprophet of a scanty fixed idea,<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Plays
\nnow the leader of our human march;<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

His
\nmight shall build the future\u2019s triumph arch.<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Now
\nis the world for his eating a ripe fruit.<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

His
\nshadow falls from London to Korea.<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Cities
\nand nations crumble in his course.<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

A
\nterror holds the peoples in its grip:<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

World-destiny
\nwaits upon that foaming lip.<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

           
\nA
\nTitan Power supports3<\/sup> this
\npigmy man,
\n 
\n <\/span><\/p>\n

            <\/p>\n

          
\n1<\/sup> gigantic<\/font><\/span>
\n2 <\/sup><\/p>\n

\n<\/sup><\/span><\/font>upholds<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

\nonly of strength and skill and giant might,<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

A
\nW<\/span>ill to trample humanity into,
\nclay<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

And
\nunify earth beneath one iron sway,<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Insists
\nupon its fierce enormous plan.<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Trampling
\nman\u2019s mind and will into one mould<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Docile
\nand facile in a dreadful hold,<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

It
\ncries its demon slogans to the crowd;<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

But
\nif its2 <\/sup>tenebrous empire were allowed,<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Its
\nmastery would prepare the dismal hour<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

When
\nthe Inconscient shall regain its right,<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

And
\nman<\/span> who emerged as Nature\u2019s
\nconscious power,<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Shall
\nsink into the deep original night<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Sharing
\nlike all her forms that went before<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The
\ndoom of the mammoth and the dinosaur.<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

It
\nis the shadow of the Titan\u2019s robe<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

That
\nlooms across the panic-stricken globe.<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

In
\nhis high<\/span> villa on the fatal hill<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Alone
\nhe listens to that sovereign Voice,<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Dictator
\nof his action’s sudden choice,<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The
\ntiger leap of a demoniac skill.<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Too
\nsmall and human for that dreadful Guest,<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

An
\nenergy his body cannot invest3 <\/sup>,
\n–<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

A
\ntortured channel, not a happy vessel,<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Drives
\nhim to think and act and cry and wrestle.<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Thus
\ndriven he must stride on conquering all,<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Threatening
\nand clamouring, brutal, invincible,<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps
\nto meet4 <\/sup>upon his storm-swept
\nroad<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

A
\ngreater<\/span> devil- or thunderstroke
\nof God.<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nhe meets<\/span>
