This volume contains letters in which Sri Aurobindo referred
\n\t\t\t to his life and works, his sadhana or practice of yoga, and the
\n\t\t\t sadhana of members of his ashram. Many of the letters appeared
\n\t\t\t earlier in Sri Aurobindo on Himself and on the Mother <\/i>(1953)
\n\t\t\t and On Himself: Compiled from Notes and Letters
\n<\/i>(1972).
\n\t\t\t These previously published letters, along with many others,
\n\t\t\t appear here under the new title
\nLetters on Himself and the<\/i> <\/p>\n

Ashram<\/i>. <\/p>\n

The letters included in the present volume have been selected
\n\t\t\t from Sri Aurobindo’s extensive correspondence with members
\n\t\t\t of the Ashram and outside disciples between November 1926
\n\t\t\t and November 1950. Letters he wrote before November 1926
\n\t\t\t are published in Autobiographical Notes and Other Writings<\/i> <\/p>\n

of Historical Interest<\/i>, volume 36 of THE<\/font> COMPLETE<\/font> WORKS
\n\t\t\t OF<\/font> SRI <\/font>AUROBINDO<\/font>. That volume also contains remarks by Sri
\n\t\t\t Aurobindo on his life and works that were written as corrections
\n\t\t\t of statements made by biographers and others, public messages
\n\t\t\t on world events, letters to public figures, and public statements
\n\t\t\t on his ashram and path of yoga. <\/p>\n

The letters on the sadhana of members of the Ashram selected for publication in Part Four of the present volume differ
\n\t\t\t from those published in Letters on Yoga<\/i>, volumes 28 \u00ad 31 of
\n\t\t\t THE<\/font> COMPLETE<\/font> WORKS<\/font>, in that they are framed historically by
\n\t\t\t events and conditions in the Sri Aurobindo Ashram between
\n\t\t\t 1926 and 1950. The dates and the questions of Sri Aurobindo’s
\n\t\t\t correspondents that accompany many of the letters in the present
\n\t\t\t volume make the historical context clear. The letters included in <\/p>\n

Letters on Yoga <\/i>were also written to Ashramites and outside
\n\t\t\t disciples during the 1926 \u00ad 1950 period, but they deal with Sri
\n\t\t\t Aurobindo’s yoga in a more general way, and thus are less in need
\n\t\t\t of the contextualisation provided by the questions and dates.

\n\t\t\tThe letters in the present volume have been arranged by the editors
\n\t\t\tin five parts, the last of which includes mantras and messages. The
\n\t\t\ttexts have been checked against all available handwritten, typed and
