I can&#8217;t say about others<br \/>\n\u2014&nbsp; perhaps some had \u2014&nbsp; but the glimpse could only<br \/>\nbring faith, it could not possibly bring knowledge; knowledge comes by Yoga, not before it.<br \/>\n\t<\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;margin-left:25pt\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\">Those who had no such glimpse may get some experience but will not be able to stick to their sadhana.<br \/>\n<\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\">&nbsp;<br \/>\n <\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t<span lang=\"en-gb\">I repeat that all one needs to know is whether the soul in one has been moved to the Yoga or not.<br \/>\n\t<\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"right\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\"><br \/>\n<font size=\"2\">5 May 1933 <\/font> <\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\">&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\"><b>Education, Belief and Yoga<br \/>\n<\/b><br \/>\n<\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\">&nbsp;<br \/>\n <\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t<span lang=\"en-gb\">I suppose I have had myself an even more completely European education than you and I have had too my period of agnostic<br \/>\ndenial, but from the moment I looked at these things I could never take the attitude of doubt and disbelief which was for so<br \/>\nlong fashionable in Europe. Abnormal, otherwise supraphysical experiences and powers, occult or Yogic, have always seemed<br \/>\nto me something perfectly natural and credible. Consciousness in its very nature could not be limited by the ordinary physical<br \/>\nhuman-animal consciousness; it must have other ranges. Yogic or occult powers are no more supernatural or incredible than is<br \/>\nsupernatural or incredible the power to write a great poem or compose great music. Few people can do it, as things are,<br \/>\n\u2014&nbsp; not<br \/>\neven one in a million; for poetry and music come from the inner &nbsp; <\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\"><br \/>\n<font size=\"2\">Page <font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u2013 <\/font>227<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\">being and to write or to compose true and great things one has to have the passage clear between the outer mind and something<br \/>\nin the inner being. That is why you got the poetic power as soon as you began Yoga<br \/>\n\u2014&nbsp; Yoga-force made the passage clear. It is<br \/>\nthe same with Yogic consciousness and its powers; the thing is to get the passage clear,<br \/>\n\u2014&nbsp; for they are already there within you.<br \/>\nOf course the first thing is to believe, aspire and, with the true urge within, make the endeavour.<br \/>\n<\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"right\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\"><br \/>\n<font size=\"2\">2 September 1931 <\/font> <\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\">&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\"><b>Ordinary Consciousness and Awakening<br \/>\n<\/b><br \/>\n\t<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;margin-left:25pt\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\">Somebody writing a biography of Confucius in Bengali says: &#8220;Why do the Dharmagurus marry, we can&#8217;t understand. Buddha did and his wife&#8217;s tale is heart-rending [<\/span><span lang=\"bn\"><br \/>\n<font size=\"4\">&#2489;&#2499;&#2470;&#2527;-&#2476;&#2495;&#2470;&#2494;&#2480;&#2453;<\/font> <\/span><span lang=\"en-gb\">].&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\">&nbsp;<br \/>\n <\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t<span lang=\"en-gb\">Why? What is there<br \/>\n\t<\/span><br \/>\n\t<span lang=\"bn\"><font size=\"4\">&#2476;&#2495;&#2470;&#2494;&#2480;&#2453;<\/font> <\/span><br \/>\n\t<span lang=\"en-gb\">&nbsp;in it?<br \/>\n\t<\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;margin-left:25pt\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\">He goes on: &#8220;Aurobindo Ghose, not a Dharmaguru, though he may be called Dharma-mad [<\/span><span lang=\"bn\"><font size=\"4\">&#2471;&#2478;&#2480;&#2509;&#2474;&#2494;&#2455;&#2482;<\/font><br \/>\n<\/span><span lang=\"en-gb\">]&#8221; \u2014&nbsp; how do you feel about that, Sir? \u2014&nbsp; &#8220;has done it too.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\">&nbsp;<br \/>\n <\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t<span lang=\"en-gb\">Well, it is better to be<br \/>\n\t<\/span><span lang=\"bn\"><font size=\"4\">&#2471;&#2478;&#2480;&#2509;&#2474;&#2494;&#2455;&#2482;<\/font> <\/span><br \/>\n\t<span lang=\"en-gb\">&nbsp;than to be a&nbsp; sententious ass and<br \/>\npronounce on what one does not understand.<br \/>\n\t<\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;margin-left:25pt\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\">&#8220;We don&#8217;t understand why they marry and why this change<br \/>\ncomes soon after marriage.&#8221; <\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\">&nbsp;<br \/>\n <\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t<span lang=\"en-gb\">Perfectly natural \u2014&nbsp; they marry before the change<br \/>\n\u2014&nbsp; then the<br \/>\nchange comes and the marriage belongs to the past self, not to the new one.<br \/>\n\t<\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;margin-left:25pt\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\">&#8220;The wives of Buddha and Ramakrishna felt proud when they were deserted.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\">&nbsp;<br \/>\n <\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t<span lang=\"en-gb\">Then what&#8217;s the harm?<br \/>\n\t<\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;margin-left:25pt\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\">&#8220;If married life is an obstacle to spirituality, then they might<br \/>\nas well not marry.&#8221; &nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\"><br \/>\n<font size=\"2\">Page <font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u2013 <\/font>228<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t<span lang=\"en-gb\">No doubt. But then when they marry, there is not an omniscient ass like this biographer to tell them that they were going to be<br \/>\n\t<\/span><span lang=\"bn\"><font size=\"4\">&#2471;&#2478;&#2480;&#2509;&#2455;&#2497;&#2480;&#2497; <\/font><\/span><br \/>\n\t<span lang=\"en-gb\">or<br \/>\n\t<\/span><span lang=\"bn\"><font size=\"4\">&#2471;&#2478;&#2480;&#2509;&#2474;&#2494;&#2455;&#2482;<\/font> <\/span><br \/>\n\t<span lang=\"en-gb\">&nbsp;or in any way concerned with any other<br \/>\n\t<\/span><span lang=\"bn\">&nbsp;<\/span><span lang=\"en-gb\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/elibrarytest\/-01 Works of Sri Aurobindo\/-03_CWSA\/-35_Letters On Himself And The Ashram\/_images\/-22_Ordinary%20Life%20and%20Yoga%20-%205.jpg\" width=\"21\" height=\"17\" align=\"texttop\"> than the biographer&#8217;s.<br \/>\n\t<\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;margin-left:25pt\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\">So, according to the biographer, all of you, except Christ,<br \/>\nshowed a lack of wisdom by marrying. <\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\">&nbsp;<br \/>\n <\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t<span lang=\"en-gb\">Well, if a biographer of Confucius can be such an unmitigated<br \/>\nass, Confucius may be allowed to be unwise once or twice, I suppose.<br \/>\n<\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;margin-left:25pt\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;margin-left:25pt\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\">I touch upon a delicate subject, but it is a puzzle. <\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\">&nbsp;<br \/>\n <\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t<span lang=\"en-gb\">Why delicate? and why a puzzle? Do you think that Buddha<br \/>\nor Confucius or myself were born with a prevision that they or I would take to the spiritual life? So long as one is in the<br \/>\nordinary consciousness, one lives the ordinary life \u2014&nbsp; when the awakening<br \/>\nand the new consciousness come, one leaves it \u2014<br \/>\nnothing puzzling in that. <\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"right\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\"><br \/>\n<font size=\"2\">27 April 1936<br \/>\n<\/font><br \/>\n<\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\"><b>Meditation as a Means<br \/>\n<\/b><\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\">&nbsp;<br \/>\n <\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t<span lang=\"en-gb\">What do you call meditation? Shutting the eyes and concentrating? It is only one method for calling down the true consciousness. To join with the true consciousness or feel its descent is<br \/>\nthe only thing important and if it comes without the orthodox method, as it always did with me, so much the better. Meditation<br \/>\nis only a means or device, the true movement is when even walking, working or speaking one is still in sadhana.<br \/>\n\t<\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"right\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\"><br \/>\n<font size=\"2\">10 June 1933 <\/font> <\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\">&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\"><b>Meditation and Purification<br \/>\n<\/b><br \/>\n\t<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;margin-left:25pt\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\">In an article Krishnaprem says that meditation can&#8217;t be fruitful for those who have not achieved a high degree of inner<br \/>\ndevelopment and purification. &nbsp; <\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\"><br \/>\n<font size=\"2\">Page <font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u2013 <\/font>229<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t<span lang=\"en-gb\">I do not know what Krishnaprem said or in which article, I do not have it with me. But if the statement is that nobody can<br \/>\nhave a successful meditation or realise anything till he is pure and perfect, I fail to follow it; it contradicts my own experience. I have always had realisation by meditation first and the purification started afterwards as a result. I have seen many get<br \/>\nimportant, even fundamental realisations by meditation who could not be said to have a great inner development. Are all<br \/>\nYogis who have meditated to effect and had great realisations in their inner consciousness perfect in their nature? It does not look<br \/>\nlike it to me.
