They had for years been in search of a Master in whom they could<br \/>\nrecognize a World-Teacher. . . .<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-left: 0pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-left: 0pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t*<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t\t\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-left: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">Mirra Richard was no less overwhelmed by this vision \u2014 this reality \u2014 of the new Man. <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-left: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-left: 0pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">[<i>Altered to:<\/i>] Mira Devi who had already gone far in spiritual realisation and occult vision and experience, was no less overwhelmed by this vision . . . <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-left: 0pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-left: 0pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t<b><a name=\"The_Arya__\">The <i>Arya<\/i> <\/a> <\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-left: 0pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-left: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">The magazine [<i>Arya<\/i>] was presumably not a financial success. <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-left: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-left: 0pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">It was, in fact; it paid its way with a large surplus. <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-left: 0pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-left: 0pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t<b><a name=\"The_Development_of_the_Ashram__\">The Development of the Ashram<br \/>\n\t<\/a> <\/b> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-left: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-left: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">Sri Aurobindo thought that the time had come to establish in<br \/>\nPondicherry an &#8220;ashram&#8221;, a rallying centre of aspiration and realization, the nucleus of a new community. <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-left: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-left: 0pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">This is hardly the fact. There was no Asram at first, only a few people came to live near Sri Aurobindo and practise Yoga. It was<br \/>\nonly some time after the Mother came from Japan that it took<br \/>\n\t\t\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-left: 0pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t\t\t<font size=\"2\">Page <font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u2013 <\/font>102<\/font><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 0pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t\t\t<span lang=\"en-gb\"> the form of the Asram, more from the wish of the sadhaks who<br \/>\ndesired to entrust their whole inner and outer life to the Mother than from any intention or plan of hers or of Sri Aurobindo.<br \/>\n\t\t\t<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 0pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t\t\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 0pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t\t\t<span lang=\"en-gb\"> *<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t\t\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-left: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">In the meantime, Mirra Richard, after her recent visit to<br \/>\nFrance, returned to Pondicherry on the 24th April, 1920. The number of disciples now showed a tendency to increase<br \/>\nrather rapidly and Sri Aurobindo decided to entrust Mirra, the Mother, with the task of organizing the &#8220;ashram&#8221; on a wider<br \/>\nbasis. . . . <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-left: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-left: 0pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">The facts are In the meantime, the Mother, after a long stay in<br \/>\nFrance and Japan, returned to Pondicherry on the 24th April, 1920. The number of disciples then showed a tendency to increase rather rapidly. When the Asram began to develop, it fell to the Mother to organise it; Sri Aurobindo soon retired<br \/>\ninto seclusion and the whole material and spiritual charge of it devolved on her. <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-left: 0pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-left: 0pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t*<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t\t\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-left: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">[On a section of a biography in which the writer dwelt at<br \/>\nlength on the Mother.] <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-left: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-left: 0pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">Section V of this Chapter is better omitted. Up till now Sri<br \/>\nAurobindo has prohibited any public propaganda of the idea of his personal divinity and that of the Mother or of certain<br \/>\naspects of the Asram life; these things have been kept private for the Asram itself, and its inmates and the disciples<br \/>\n\u2014 especially<br \/>\nanything in the English language. There was also a letter to the Governor of Madras forwarding another contribution along with<br \/>\na statement of his views about the war which was published. Besides this, other contributions were made direct to France.<br \/>\nLater on, letters supporting the war were made public. As for the Cripps&#8217; offer, it was supported in a long telegram sent not to<br \/>\nthe Viceroy&#8217;s Secretary but to Cripps himself after his broadcast in which he announced the offer. <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<p>*<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t\t\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-left: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">[The telegram was a &#8220;political gesture&#8221;.] <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-left: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-left: 0pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">Sri Aurobindo does not know whether this can be described as a public political gesture. The interest of your chapters is historical and biographical rather than concerned with the present course of politics or any new intervention in it. At any rate Sri<br \/>\nAurobindo did not intend these notes as constituting any such public intervention or gesture. <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-left: 0pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-left: 0pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t<b><a name=\"Muslims_and_the_1947_Partition_of_Bengal__\">Muslims and the 1947 Partition of Bengal<br \/>\n\t<\/a> <\/b><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-left: 0pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-left: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">Muslims, the descendants of foreigners, favoured the partition<br \/>\nof Bengal. <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-left: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-left: 0pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">This would seem to indicate that all the Mohammedans in India<br \/>\nare descendants of foreigners, but the idea of two nationalities in India is only a new-fangled notion invented by Jinnah for<br \/>\nhis purposes and contrary to the facts. More than 90% of the Indian Mussulmans are descendants of converted Hindus and<br \/>\nbelong as much to the Indian nation as the Hindus themselves. This process of conversion has continued all along; Jinnah is<br \/>\nhimself a descendant of a Hindu converted in fairly recent times named Jinnabhai and many of the most famous Mohammedan<br \/>\nleaders have a similar origin.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-left: 0pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-left: 0pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t*<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n &nbsp; <\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t\t\t<font size=\"2\">Page <font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u2013 <\/font>104<\/font><\/p>\n<hr>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-left: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">Assam had a majority of Muslims.\n\t<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">The majority in Assam is made up of the Hindus and the tribal<br \/>\npeoples; in Assam proper the Mussulmans are only 20% of the population. The balance has been altered by the inclusion of Sylhet, a Bengali district in Assam, but even so the non-Mussulmans predominate.
