Written in Baroda, it has a curious<br \/>\nhistory attached to it. Sri Aurobindo seems to have had especial<br \/>\nfondness for this early creation of his. He particularly mentioned<br \/>\nit in the Introduction to <i>Collected Poems and Plays<\/i> as one of the<br \/>\ntwo works, lost\u2014the other being a translation of Kalidasa&#8217;s <i>Meghaduta (Cloud-Messenger)<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\nBy a strange turn of destiny the drama was recovered from the<br \/>\nGovernment Archives in 1951 along with other manuscripts<br \/>\nwhich had been exhibits in the Alipore Conspiracy Case.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\nThis play was published in <i>Sri Aurobindo Mandir Annual<\/i>, 1959, and also issued in book-form in the same year.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\nP<font size=\"2\">RINCE OF <\/font>E<font size=\"2\">DUR <\/font>was written, as noted in the manuscript, in<br \/>\n1907, that is to say, in the very thick of Sri Aurobindo&#8217;s political<br \/>\nactivity. It is not complete as it has only three acts and not five.<br \/>\nT<font size=\"2\">HE <\/font>P<font size=\"2\">RINCE OF <\/font>M<font size=\"2\">ATHURA<\/font>, available as a fragment and printed<br \/>\nhere for the first time, is a different version of the same theme.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\nP<font size=\"2\">RINCE OF <\/font>E<font size=\"2\">DUR <\/font>was first published in<br \/>\n<i>Sri Aurobindo Mandir<br \/>\nAnnual<\/i>, 1961.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\nT<font size=\"2\">HE <\/font>M<font size=\"2\">AID IN THE <\/font>M<font size=\"2\">ILL<br \/>\n<\/font>and T<font size=\"2\">HE <\/font>H<font size=\"2\">OUSE OF <\/font>B<font size=\"2\">RUT<br \/>\n<\/font>are both incomplete and belong to Sri Aurobindo&#8217;s early Baroda period.<br \/>\nThey were printed in <i>Sri Aurobindo Mandir Annual<\/i>, 1962, for<br \/>\nthe first time.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\nT<font size=\"2\">HE <\/font>B<font size=\"2\">IRTH OF<\/font> S<font size=\"2\">IN<br \/>\n<\/font>printed here as a play seems to be the first<br \/>\nversion of what appeared as a dialogue in poetic form in <i>Collected Poems and Plays<\/i> of Sri Aurobindo in 1942.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\nV<font size=\"2\">IKRAMORVASIE <\/font>or T<font size=\"2\">HE <\/font>H<font size=\"2\">ERO AND THE<br \/>\n<\/font>N<font size=\"2\">YMPH<\/font>, translated from<br \/>\nKalidasa&#8217;s play in Sanskrit, was written in Baroda and it was<br \/>\nfirst published in book-form in 1911. The second edition appeared in 1941 and the third was published in 1952 with &quot;On<br \/>\nTranslating Kalidasa&quot; as an Introduction and &quot;The Character of<br \/>\nthe Hero&quot; as an Appendix, both being studies written in Baroda.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\nS<font size=\"2\">HORT <\/font>S<font size=\"2\">TORIES<\/font>: The three stories\u2014T<font size=\"2\">HE<br \/>\n<\/font>P<font size=\"2\">HANTOM <\/font>H<font size=\"2\">OUR<\/font>, T<font size=\"2\">HE<br \/>\n<\/font>D<font size=\"2\">OOR AT <\/font>A<font size=\"2\">BELARD <\/font>and T<font size=\"2\">HE<br \/>\n<\/font>D<font size=\"2\">EVIL&#8217;S <\/font>M<font size=\"2\">ASTIFF <\/font>\u2014 the last two of<br \/>\nwhich are incomplete\u2014belong to a projected series called I<font size=\"2\">DYLLS<br \/>\nOF THE <\/font>O<font size=\"2\">CCULT<\/font>. The fourth story, T<font size=\"2\">HE<br \/>\n<\/font>G<font size=\"2\">OLDEN <\/font>B<font size=\"2\">IRD<\/font>, seems to<br \/>\nbe symbolic. All these stories belong to the early period in Pondicherry. They have been printed in Ashram journals. T<font size=\"2\">HE<br \/>\n<\/font>P<font size=\"2\">HANTOM <\/font>H<font size=\"2\">OUR <\/font>was also published in book-form in 1951.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\nJ<font size=\"2\">UVENILIA<\/font>: Just as the printing of Volume 7 was brought to an<br \/>\nend one incomplete play and one fragment of a play came to light.<br \/>\nThey belong to Sri Aurobindo&#8217;s student days in London.
