\nBIBLIOGRAPHICAL NOTE<\/b><\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nThe VIZIERS OF <\/font>BASSORA <\/font>is one of the early works of Sri
\nAurobindo on a major scale. Written in Baroda, it has a curious
\nhistory attached to it. Sri Aurobindo seems to have had especial
\nfondness for this early creation of his. He particularly mentioned
\nit in the Introduction to Collected Poems and Plays<\/i> as one of the
\ntwo works, lost\u2014the other being a translation of Kalidasa’s Meghaduta (Cloud-Messenger)<\/i>.<\/p>\n

\nBy a strange turn of destiny the drama was recovered from the
\nGovernment Archives in 1951 along with other manuscripts
\nwhich had been exhibits in the Alipore Conspiracy Case.<\/p>\n

\nThis play was published in Sri Aurobindo Mandir Annual<\/i>, 1959, and also issued in book-form in the same year.<\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nPRINCE OF <\/font>EDUR <\/font>was written, as noted in the manuscript, in
\n1907, that is to say, in the very thick of Sri Aurobindo’s political
\nactivity. It is not complete as it has only three acts and not five.
\nTHE <\/font>PRINCE OF <\/font>MATHURA<\/font>, available as a fragment and printed
\nhere for the first time, is a different version of the same theme.<\/p>\n

\nPRINCE OF <\/font>EDUR <\/font>was first published in
\nSri Aurobindo Mandir
\nAnnual<\/i>, 1961.<\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nTHE <\/font>MAID IN THE <\/font>MILL
\n<\/font>and THE <\/font>HOUSE OF <\/font>BRUT
\n<\/font>are both incomplete and belong to Sri Aurobindo’s early Baroda period.
\nThey were printed in Sri Aurobindo Mandir Annual<\/i>, 1962, for
\nthe first time.<\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nTHE <\/font>BIRTH OF<\/font> SIN
\n<\/font>printed here as a play seems to be the first
\nversion of what appeared as a dialogue in poetic form in Collected Poems and Plays<\/i> of Sri Aurobindo in 1942.<\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nVIKRAMORVASIE <\/font>or THE <\/font>HERO AND THE
\n<\/font>NYMPH<\/font>, translated from
\nKalidasa’s play in Sanskrit, was written in Baroda and it was
\nfirst published in book-form in 1911. The second edition appeared in 1941 and the third was published in 1952 with "On
\nTranslating Kalidasa" as an Introduction and "The Character of
\nthe Hero" as an Appendix, both being studies written in Baroda.<\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nSHORT <\/font>STORIES<\/font>: The three stories\u2014THE
\n<\/font>PHANTOM <\/font>HOUR<\/font>, THE
\n<\/font>DOOR AT <\/font>ABELARD <\/font>and THE
\n<\/font>DEVIL’S <\/font>MASTIFF <\/font>\u2014 the last two of
\nwhich are incomplete\u2014belong to a projected series called IDYLLS
\nOF THE <\/font>OCCULT<\/font>. The fourth story, THE
\n<\/font>GOLDEN <\/font>BIRD<\/font>, seems to
\nbe symbolic. All these stories belong to the early period in Pondicherry. They have been printed in Ashram journals. THE
\n<\/font>PHANTOM <\/font>HOUR <\/font>was also published in book-form in 1951.<\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nJUVENILIA<\/font>: Just as the printing of Volume 7 was brought to an
\nend one incomplete play and one fragment of a play came to light.
\nThey belong to Sri Aurobindo’s student days in London. THE <\/font>WITCH OF
