\n <\/p>\n

\nSing to me, Muse, of the wrath of Achilles Pelidean,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMurderous, bringing a million woes on the men of Achaea;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMany the mighty souls whom it drove down headlong to Hades,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSouls of heroes and made of their bodies booty for vultures,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDogs and all birds; so the will of Zeus was wholly accomplished<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEven from the moment when they two parted in strife and in anger,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPeleus’ glorious son and the monarch of men Agamemnon.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhich of the gods was it set them to conflict and quarrel disastrous?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLeto’s son from the seed of Zeus; he wroth with their monarch<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRoused in the ranks an evil pest and the peoples perished.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor he insulted Chryses, priest and master of prayer,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAtreus’ son, when he came to the swift ships of the Achaeans<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHoping release for his daughter, bringing a limitless ransom<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhile in his hands were the chaplets of great far-hurtling Apollo<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTwined on a sceptre of gold and entreated all the Achaeans. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n“Atreus’ son and all you high-greaved armed Achaeans;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nYou may the gods grant, they who dwell in your lofty Olympus,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPriam’s city to sack and safely to reach your firesides.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOnly my child beloved may you loose to me taking this ransom,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHolding in awe great Zeus’ son far-hurtling Apollo.”<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThen all there rumoured approval, the other Achaeans,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDeeming the priest to revere and take that glorious ransom,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut Agamemnon it pleased not; the heart of him angered,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEvilly rather he sent him and hard was his word upon him.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n“Let me not find thee again, old man, by our ships of the Ocean<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEither lingering now or afterwards ever returning,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLest the sceptre avail thee not, no nor the great God’s chaplets.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHer will I not release; before that age shall o’ertake her<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThere in our dwelling in Argos far from the land of her fathers<\/span><\/p>\n

\nGoing about her loom, ascending my couch at nightfall.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSo he spake and the old man feared him and heeded his bidding.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nVoiceless along the shore by the myriad cry of the waters<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSlowly he went; but deeply he prayed as he paced to the distance,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPrayed to the Lord Apollo, child of Leto the golden.<\/span><\/p>\n
