\nThe Defeat of Dhoomraksha<\/font><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nBut in their lust of battle shouted loud,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRejoicing, all the Apes when they beheld<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe dreadful Rakshas coming forth to war,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDhoomraksha. High the din of mellay rose,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nGiant and Ape with tree and spear and mace<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSmiting each other; for the Giants hewed<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTheir dire opponents down on every side,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd they too with the trunks of trees bore down<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTheir monstrous foes and levelled with the dust.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut in their wrath increasing Lanca’s hosts<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPierced the invaders; straight their arrows flew<\/span><\/p>\n

\nUnswerving, fatal, heron-winged; sharp-knobbed<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTheir maces smote and dreadful clubs prevailed;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe curious tridents did their work. But torn,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut mangled by the shafts, but pierced with spears<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Apes in act heroic, unalarmed,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDrew boldness from impatience of defeat;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTrees from the earth they plucked, lifted great rocks<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd with a dreadful speed, roaring aloud,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHurling their shouted names behind the blow,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThey slew with these the heroes of the isle.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDown fell the Giants crushed and from their mouths<\/span><\/p>\n

\nVomited lifeblood, pounded were by rocks<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd with crushed sides collapsed or by ape-teeth<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWere mangled, or lay in heaps by trees o’erborne.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSome with sad faces tore their locks in grief,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBewildered with the smell of blood and death<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSome lifeless sank upon the earth. Enraged<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDhoomraksha saw the rout and forward stormed<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd made a mighty havoc of the foe,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCrushing to earth their bleeding forms with axe<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nAnd javelin and mace oppressed or torn.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSome helpless died, some gave their blood to earth,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSome scattering fled the fierce pursuer’s wrath,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSome with torn hearts slept on one side relaxed<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOn earth’s soft bosom, some with entrails plucked<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOut of their bodies by the tridents died<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWretchedly. Sweet twanged the bowstrings, lyres of war,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe sobbing of the warriors’ breath was time<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd with a thunder dull, battle delivered<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIts dread orchestral music. In the front<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf all that war Dhoomraksha thundered armed,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLaughing aloud, and with fast-sleeting shafts<\/span><\/p>\n

\nScattered to every wind his foes. At last<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Son of Tempest saw his army’s rout<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAstonished by Dhoomraksha; wroth he saw<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd came, carrying a giant crag he came,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRed-gazing, and with all his father’s force<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAt dire Dhoomraksha’s chariot hurled. Alarmed<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDhoomraksha saw the flying boulder come<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd rearing up his club from the high car<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe leaped. Down crashed the rock and ground the car<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo pieces, wheel and flag and pole and yoke<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd the forsaken bow. Hanuman too<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAbandoning his chariot through the ranks<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOpposing strode with havoc; trees unlopped<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWith all their boughs for mace and club he used.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWith shattered heads and bodies oozing blood<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Giants fell before him. Scattering so<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Giant army Hanuman, the Wind’s<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTremendous son, took easily in his hands<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA mountain’s mighty top and ran and strode<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhere stood Dhoomraksha. Roaring answer loud<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe mighty Giant with his club upreared<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCame furiously to meet the advancing foe.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWrathful the heroes met, and on the head<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf Hanuman the weapon many-spiked<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf dire Dhoomraksha fell; but he the Ape,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nStrong in inheritance of might divine,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNot even heeded such a blow, but brought<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRight on Dhoomraksha’s crown the summit huge<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd all his limbs were shattered with the stroke<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd like a broken mountain they collapsed<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEarthward, o’erwhelmed, in-smitten, prone. The Giants left,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSurvivors of that slaughter, fled alarmed<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd entered Lanca by the Apes pursued<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd butchered as they fled. But from that fight<\/span><\/p>\n

\nVictorious, weary, rested Hanuman<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAmid his slaughtered foemen and engirt<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWith the red rivers he had made to flow,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPraised by the host, rejoicing in his wounds.<\/span><\/p>\n
