\nWho is this with smeared limbs<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf sandal wreathed with forest blossom?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor a beauty in him gleams<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEarth bears not on her mortal bosom.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nHe his hair with bloom has crowned,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd many bees come murmuring, swarming.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWho is he that with sweet sound<\/span><\/p>\n

\nArrests our feet, our hearts alarming?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nDaily came I to the river,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDaily passed these boughs of blessing,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut beneath their shadow never<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSaw such beauty heart-caressing.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nLike a cloud yet moist with rain<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis hue is, robe of masquerader.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAh, a girl’s soul out to win<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOutposts here what amorous raider?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nAnkle over ankle lays<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd moonbeams from his feet make glamour;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhen he moves, at every pace<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis body’s sweets Love’s self enamour. <\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhat is this strange, sweet thing I watch today,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFixed lightning in the water’s quiet dreaming?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLolita, none<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDisturb a single wave here, even one!<\/span><\/p>\n

\nGreat is her sin who blots the vision gleaming.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLolita, see<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhat glimmers in the wave so wondrously?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf Crishna’s limbs it has each passionate motion.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo lure my soul comes that dark rose of men<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn a shadow’s form, and witch with strange emotion?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo bring sweet water home we troop here gaily,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut never yet saw in the waves such beauty.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhy do so many strange sweet thoughts assail me,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAs moon-bloom petals to the moon pay duty?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhat is it shining, heaving, glimmering,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIs it a flower or face<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThus shimmering with the water’s shimmering<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd swaying as it sways?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nIs it a lotus darkly blooming<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn Jamouna’s clear stream?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhat else the depths opaque illuming<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCould with such beauty claim?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nIs it his shadow whom dark-burning<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn sudden bloom we see<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhen with our brimming jars returning<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWe pass the tamal-tree?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nIs there in upper heavens or under<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA moon that’s dark of hue?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBy daylight does that moon of wonder<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIts mystic dawn renew?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nI know him by the eyes all hearts that ravish,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor who is there beside him?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nO honey grace of amorous sweetness lavish!<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nI know him by his dark compelling beauty;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOnce only having spied him<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor him I stained my honour, scorned my duty.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nI know him by his feet of moonbeam brightness;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBecause for their sake purely<\/span><\/p>\n

\nI live and move, my name is taxed with lightness.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut he thou lovest truth nor kindness keeps;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis tryst thou servest,
\ndisappointed, grieving, \u2014<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe on another’s lovelier bosom sleeps.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWith Chundra’s sweets he honeys out the hours.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIf thou believe not, come and thou wilt find him<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn night’s pale close upon a bed of flowers,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThy Shyama with those alien arms to bind him.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor I have seen her languid swooning charms<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd I have seen his burning lovely youth,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBound breast to breast with close entwining arms<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAlarms the ear with ominous noise?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWho brought this chariot to tread under<\/span><\/p>\n

\nGocool, our Paradise?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWatching the wheels our hearts are rent asunder.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAlas! and why is Crishna standing<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWith Ocroor in the moving car?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo Mothura is he then wending,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo Mothura afar,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe anguish in our eyes not understanding?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nWhat fault, what fault in Radha finding<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHast thou forsaken her who loved thee,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHer tears upon thy feet not minding?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOnce surely they had moved thee!<\/span><\/p>\n

\nO Radha’s lord, what fault in Radha finding?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nBut Shyama, dost thou recollect not,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThat we have left all for thy sake?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf other thought, of other love we recked not,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLabouring thy love to wake.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThy love’s the only thought our minds reject not.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHast thou forgot how we came running<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAt midnight when the moon was full,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHopeless to see those well-loved feet returning.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAll riches that we had, alone<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThou wast, therefore forlorn we languish;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFrom empty breasts we make our moan.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nI should behold the flute on loved lips resting.”<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhere shall I find him, joy in his sweet kisses?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHow shall I hope my love’s feet to embrace?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nO void is home and vain affection’s bliss is<\/span><\/p>\n
