\n1. This is the omniscient who knows the
\nlaw of our being
\nand is sufficient to his works; let us build the song of his
\ntruth by our thought and make it as if a chariot on which
\nhe shall mount. When he dwells with us, then a happy
\nwisdom becomes ours. With him for friend we cannot
\ncome to harm.<\/font> <\/font><\/p>\n

\n \n<\/p>\n

\n2. Whosoever makes him his priest of
\nthe sacrifice, reaches the
\nperfection that is the fruit of his striving, a home on a
\nheight of being where there is no warring and no enemies; he confirms in himself an ample energy;
\nhe is safe in his
\nstrength, evil cannot lay its hand upon him.<\/font>
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\n \n<\/p>\n

\n3. This is the fire of our sacrifice!
\nMay we have strength to
\nkindle it to its height, may it perfect our thoughts. In
\nthis all that we give must be thrown that it may become a
\nfood for the gods; this shall bring to us the godheads
\nof the infinite consciousness who are our desire.<\/font>
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\n4. Let us gather fuel for it, let us
\nprepare for it offerings, let us
\nmake ourselves conscious of the jointings of its times and
\nits seasons. It shall so perfect our thoughts that they shall <\/font><\/p>\n

\nextend our being and create for us a larger life.<\/font>

\n5. This is the guardian of the world
\nand its peoples, the shepherd of all these herds; all that is born moves by his rays
\nand is compelled by his flame, both the two-footed and the
\nfour-footed creatures. This is the rich and great thought-awakening of the Dawn within.<\/font> <\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

6. This is the priest who guides the
\nmarch of the sacrifice, the
\nfirst and ancient who calls to the gods and gives the
\nofferings; his is the command and his the purification; from his birth he stands in front the
\nvicar of our sacrifice.
\nHe knows all the works of this divine priesthood, for he is
\nthe Thinker who increases in us.<\/font> <\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n7. The faces of this God are everywhere
\nand he fronts all things
\nperfectly; he has the eye and the vision: when we see him
\nfrom afar, yet he seems near to us, so brilliantly he shines
\nacross the gulfs. He sees beyond the darkness of our
\nnight, for his vision is divine. <\/font>  <\/font><\/p>\n

\nO you godheads, let our chariot be
\nalways in front, let our
\nclear and strong word overcome all that thinks the falsehood. O you godheads, know for us, know in us that Truth,
\nincrease the speech that finds and utters it.<\/font>

\n9. With blows that slay cast from our
\npath, O thou Flame, the
\npowers that stammer in the speech and stumble in the
\nthought, the devourers of our power and our knowledge
\nwho leap at us from near and shoot at us from afar. Make
\nthe path of the sacrifice a clear and happy journeying.<\/font>
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\n10. Thou hast bright red horses for thy
\nchariot, O Will divine, who are driven by the storm-wind of thy passion; thou
\nroarest like a bull, thou rushest upon the forests of life, on its
\npleasant trees that encumber thy path, with the smoke of
\nthy passion in which there is the thought and the sight.<\/font>
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n11. At the noise of thy coming even
\nthey that wing in the skies
\nare afraid, when thy eaters of the pasture go abroad in their
\nhaste. So thou makest clear thy path to thy kingdom that
\nthy chariots may run towards it easily.<\/font>

\n12. This dread and tumult of thee, is
\nit not the wonderful and
\nexceeding wrath of the gods of the Life rushing down on
\nus to found here the purity of the Infinite, the harmony of
\nthe Lover? Be gracious, O thou fierce Fire, let their minds
\nbe again sweet to us and pleasant.<\/font> <\/font><\/p>\n

\nis the peace of thy beatitude; may that be the home of our abiding!<\/font>

\n14. That is the bliss of him and the
\nhappiness; for then is this
\nWill very gracious and joy-giving when in its own divine
\nhouse, lit into its high and perfect flame, it is adored by
\nour thoughts and satisfied with the wine of our delight.
\nThen it lavishes its deliciousness, then it returns in treasure
\nand substance all that we have given into its hands.<\/font>

\nO thou infinite and indivisible
\nBeing, it is thou ever that
\nformest the sinless universalities of the spirit by our sacrifice; thou compellest and inspirest thy favourites by thy
\nhappy and luminous forcefulness, by the fruitful riches of
\nthy joy. Among them may we be numbered. <\/font>

\n1. I meditate on the Fire, the priest of
\nthe call, the giver of the Treasure, the son of force, who knows all things
\nborn, the Fire who is like one illumined and knowing all things born.<\/font> 
\n<\/font>The Fire who perfect in the
\npilgrim-sacrifice, a God with his high-lifted longing<\/font>\u00b9<\/font>
\nhungers with his flame for the blaze of the offering of light, for its current
\npoured on him as an oblation.<\/font> <\/font><\/p>\n

\n2. Thee most powerful for sacrifice, as
\ngivers of sacrifice may we call, the eldest of the Angiras, the Illumined One,
\ncall thee with our thoughts, O Brilliant Fire, with our illumined <\/font>

\nwho encircles all like heaven, the Male with hair of flaming-light whom may

\n3. Many things illumining with his
\nwide-shining energy he becomes one who cleaves through those who would hurt us,
\nlike a battle-axe he cleaves through those who would hurt us, he in whose shock
\neven that which is strong falls asunder, even what is firmly fixed falls like
\ntrees; overwhelming with his force he toils on and goes not back, like warriors
\nwith the bow from the battle he goes not back.<\/font>
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n4. Even things strongly built they give to
\nhim as to one who knows: one gives for safeguarding by his movements of
\nflaming-power, gives to the Fire that he may guard us. Into many things he
\nenters and hews them with his flaming light like trees, even things firmly fixed
\nhe tears by his energy and makes his food by his energy even things firmly
\nfixed.<\/font>  <\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n5. We meditate on\u00b2 that fullness of him on
\nthe upper levels, this Fire the vision of whom is brighter in the night than in<\/font>
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\n\u00b9<\/font>Or,
\nthe priest of the call for men who see,   \u00b2or, we hold <\/font> \n<\/p>\n

\nthe day, for his undeparting life brighter
\nthan in the day. Then does his life grasp and support us like a strong house of
\nrefuge for the Son, \u2014 ageless fires moving towards the happiness enjoyed and
\nthat not yet enjoyed, moving his ageless fires.<\/font>
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n6. He is many-noised like the army of the
\nstorm-winds hurrying over the fertile lands full of our labour, hurrying over
\nthe waste lands.<\/font>\u00b9<\/font>
\nHe takes and devours the offerings, he is the eye of intuition of the sacrifice
\nin its due action; so all men follow with pleasure the path of this joyful and
\njoy-giving Fire, as on a path leading to happiness.<\/font>
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n7. When in his twofold strength, bards
\nwith illumination upon them, the Bhrigu-flame-seers have made obeisance and
\nspoken to him the word, when they have churned him out by their worship, \u2014 the
\nFlame-Seers, the Fire becomes master of the riches, he who in his purity holds
\nthem within him, wise he enjoys the things laid upon him and they are pleasant
\nto him, he takes joy of them in his wisdom.<\/font>
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n\u00b9Or, in the esoteric sense, the army
\nof the Life-Powers moving with fertilising rain over our tilled and our waste
\nlands. <\/font><\/font> \n<\/p>\n

\n8. We call to thee, the Lord of all
\ncreatures, the master of the house common to them all for the enjoying, the
\ncarrier of the true words for the enjoying, \u2014 to the Guest of men in whose
\npresence stand as in the presence of a father, all these Immortals and make our
\nofferings their food \u2014 in the Gods they become their food.<\/font>
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n9. O Fire, thou art overwhelming in thy
\nstrength, thou art born most forceful for the forming of the Gods, as if a
\nwealth for the forming of the Gods; most forceful is thy rapture, most luminous
\nthy will. So they serve thee, O Ageless Fire, who hear thy word serve thee, O
\nAgeless Fire!<\/font> <\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n10. To the Great One, the Strong in his
\nforce, the waker in the Dawn, to Fire as to one who has vision, let your hymn
\narise. When the giver of the offering cries towards him in all the planes, in
\nthe front of the wise he chants our adoration, the priest of the call of the
\nwise who chants their adoration.<\/font> <\/font><\/p>\n

\n11. So, becoming visible, most near to us
\nbring, O Fire, by thy perfect consciousness, the Riches that ever accompany the
\nGods, by thy perfect consciousness the Great Riches. O most strong Fire, create
\nfor us that which is great for vision,<\/font>

\n2. The twice-born Agni moves (intense)
\nabout his triple food;<\/font>  <\/font>
\nit is eaten and with the year it has grown

\nhe is the strong master and enjoyer, with the other he engirdles and crushes in
\nhis embrace<\/font>\u00b3<\/font><\/a>
\nhis delightful things. <\/font><\/p>\n

\n3. He gives energy of movement to both his
\nmothers on their dark path, in their common dwelling and both make their way
\nthrough to their child<\/font>4<\/font><\/sup>
\nfor his tongue is lifted upward, he destroys and rushes swiftly through and
\nshould be chosen, increasing his father.<\/font>5<\/font><\/sup>

\n5. They for him destroy and speed lightly

\ncreating his dark being of thickness and his mighty form of light; when reaching
\nforward he touches the Vast of Being, he pants towards it and, thundering, cries

\n6. He who when he would become in the
\ntawny ones, bends down and. goes to them bellowing as the male to its mates, \u2014
\nputting out his forces he gives joy to their bodies<\/font>\u00b3<\/font>

\n7. He whether contracted in being or
\nwide-extended seizes on them utterly; he knowing, they knowing the eternal Agni

\nare not used in the Veda invariably, the former not usually, to mean
\nearth, but stray or return to their original sense \u2014 sapta avanayah<\/i><\/font>̣<\/font>.<\/font><\/i>

\nhe makes blissful the forms of things <\/font><\/p>\n

\n9. Tearing about her the robe that
\nconceals the other he moves on utterly to the Delight with the creatures of pure
\nBeing who manifest the Force; he establishes the wideness, he breaks through to
\nthe goal for this traveller, even though swift-rushing, he cleaves always to the
\npaths.\u00b2<\/font> <\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n10. Burn bright for us, O Agni, in our
\nfullnesses, henceforth be the strong master and inhabit in us with the sisters;
\ncasting away from thee those of them that are infant minds thou shouldst burn
\nbright encompassing us all about like a cuirass in our battles.\u00b3<\/font>
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\n11. This, O Agni, is that which is
\nwell-established upon the ill-<\/font>  <\/font><\/p>\n

\nis uncertain. It may be dead or dying. Rebhire<\/i> == delight, is here
\nperfectly proved. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nis the Greek Kasis<\/i> and an old variant of śvasr<\/i><\/font>̣<\/font><\/i>
