\nA god concealed in mountain majesty,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEmbodied to our cloudy physical sight<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn snowy summits and green-gloried slopes,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo northward of the many-rivered land<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMeasuring the earth in an enormous ease,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nImmense Himaloy dwells and in the moan<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf eastern ocean and in western floods<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPlunges his giant sides. Him once the hills<\/span><\/p>\n

\nImagined as the mighty calf of earth<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhen the Wideness milked her udders; gems brilliant-rayed<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWere born and herbs on every mountain marge.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSo in his infinite riches is he dressed,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNot all his snows can slay his opulence,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd though they chill the feet of heaven, her sons<\/span><\/p>\n

\nForget that fault mid all his crowding gifts,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAs faints in luminous floods the gloomy mark<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOn the moon’s argent disk; they choose his vales<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor playground, his hill-peaks for divine homes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBrightness of minerals on his rocks is spread<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhich to the Apsaras give adorning hues<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn their love-sports and in their dances; flung<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOn the split clouds their brilliant colours ranged,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLike an untimely sunset’s glories live.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFar down the clouds droop to his girdle-waist;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThen by the low-hung plateaus’ coolness drawn<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Siddhas in soft shade repose, but flee<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSoon upward by wild driving rain distressed<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo summits splendid in the veilless sun.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe hunter seeks for traces on his sides,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd though their reddened footprints are expunged<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBy the new-falling snows, yet can he find<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe path his prey the mighty lions go;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor, it is told, pearls from slain elephants<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAre clotted, fallen from their hollow claws,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd tell their dangerous passage. When he rests<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTired with the chase and bares to winds his brow,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThey come, fay-breezes dancing on the slopes,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nShaking the cedars on Himaloy’s breast,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nScattering the peacock’s gorgeous-plumed attire,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWith spray of Ganges’ cascades on their wings<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSprinkling his hair. He makes the grottoed glens<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis chambers of desire and in the night<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhen the strong forest-wanderer is lain<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTwined with his love, marrying with hers his sighs,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe luminous herbs from the dim banks around,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFaint oilless lamps, give light to see her joy.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNor only earthly footsteps tread the grass,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOr mortal love finds there its happy scenes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe birch-leaves of the hills love-pages are;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLike spots of age upon the tusky kings,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn ink of liquid metals letters strange<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMake crimson signs, pages where passion burns<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd divine Circes pen heart-moving things.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Kinnars wander singing in his glades.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe fills the hollows of his bamboo flutes<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWith the wind rising from his deep ravines,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd with a moaning and melodious sound<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBreathes from his rocky mouths as if he meant<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo pipe, tune-giver to their minstrelsies.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe delicate heels of the maned Kinnari<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAre by his frosted slabs of snow distressed,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nYet for her burden of breasts and heavy hips<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCan change not their slow motion’s swaying grace<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo escape the biting pathway’s chill unease.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nShe too in grottoed caverns lies embraced.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhen from her limbs is plucked the raiment fine<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf the Kinnar’s shamefast love, then hanging come<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe convex clouds across the grotto doors<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd make chance curtains against mortal eyes,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nShielding the naked goddess from our sight.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe elephant herds there wander: resinous trees<\/span><\/p>\n

\nShaken and rubbed by their afflicting brows<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLoose down their odorous tears in creamy drops;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe winds upon the plateaus burdened pant<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd make of all the air a scented dream.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe yaks are there; they lift their bushy tails<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd in their lashings scatter gleamings white<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAs moonbeams shed upon the sleeping hills:<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBrightly they seem to fan the mountain king.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe hides in his deep caves the hunted night<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFearful of the day’s brilliant eyes. His peaks<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSeem to outpeer the lower-circling sun,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhich sends its upward beams as if to wake<\/span><\/p>\n

\nImmortal lilies in his tarns unplucked<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBy the seven sages in their starry march.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSuch is Himaloy’s greatness, such his strength<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThat seems to uplift to heaven the earth. He bears<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe honey Soma plant upon his heights,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf godward symbols the exalted source.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe by the Master of sacrifice was crowned<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe ancient monarch of a million hills.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn equal rites he to his giant bed<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe mind-born child of the world-fathers bore.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe earthly comrade and the help-fellow<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf Meru, their sublime celestial home,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nStable of soul, to make a stable race<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMena he wed whose wisdom seers adored.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTheir joy of love was like themselves immense<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd in the wide felicitous lapse of time<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIts long and puissant ecstasy bore fruit.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBearing the banner of her unchanged youth<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd beauty to charmed motherhood she crossed.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMainac she bore, the guest of the deep seas,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nUpon whose peaks the serpent-women play,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTheir jewelled tresses glittering through the gloom,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRace of a cavernous and monstrous world;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThere fled when Indra tore the mountains’ wings,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis divine essence bore no cruel sign,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNor felt the anguish of the lightning’s bite.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNext to a nobler load her womb gave place;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor Daksha’s daughter, Shiva’s wife, the Lord<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf Being, in her angry will who left<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHer body soulless in her father’s hall,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSought in their mountain home a happier birth,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd by her in a trance profound of joy<\/span><\/p>\n

\nConceived was born of great Himaloy’s seed.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOut of the soul unseen the splendid child<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCame like success with daring for its sire<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd for its mother clear-eyed thought sublime.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThen were the regions subtle with delight,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSoft, pure from cloud and stain; then heaven’s shells<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBlew sweetly, flowery rain came drifting down,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEarth answered to the rapture of the skies<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd all her moving and unmoving life<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFelt happiness because the Bride was born.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSo this fair mother by this daughter shone,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSo that new beauty radiated its beams<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAs if a land of lapis lazuli<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTorn by the thunder’s voice shot suddenly forth<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA jewelled sprouting from the mother bed.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nParvati was she called, the mountain’s child,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhen love to love cried answer in her house<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd to that sound she turned her lovely face,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut after-days the great maternal name<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf Uma gave. On her as fair she grew<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHer father banqueted his sateless look;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe felt himself a lamp fulfilled in light,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHeaven’s silent path by Ganges voiceful made,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOr thought made glorious by a perfect word.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLike bees that winging come upon the wind<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\nAmong the infinite sweets of honeyed spring<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDrawn to the mango-flower’s delicious breast,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAll eyes sought her. Her little childlike form<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIncreasing to new curves of loveliness,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nShe grew like the moon’s arc from day to day.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAmong her fair companions of delight<\/span><\/p>\n

\nShe built frail walls of heavenly Ganges’ sands<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOr ran to seize the tossing ball or pleased<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWith puppet children her maternal mind,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAbsorbed in play, the mother of the worlds.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd easily too to her as if in play<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAll sciences and wisdoms crowding came<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOut of her former life, like swans that haste<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn autumn to a sacred river’s shores;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThey started from her mind as grow at night<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBorn from some luminous herb its glimmering rays.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo her child-body youth, a charm, arrived<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAdorning every limb, a wine of joy<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo intoxicate the heart, the eyes that gazed,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nShooting the arrows of love’s curving bow.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEven as a painting grows beneath the hand<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf a great master, as the lotus opens<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIts petals to the flatteries of the sun,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSo into perfect roundness grew her limbs<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd opened up sweet colour, form and light.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHer feet limned a red rose at every step<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOn the enamoured earth; like magic flowers<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThey moved from spot to spot their petalled bloom;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHer motion studied from the queenly swans<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWith wanton swaying musically timed<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe sweet-voiced anklets’ murmurous refrain.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFrom moulded knee to ankle the supreme<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDivinely lessening curve so lovely was<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIt looked as if on this alone were spent<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAll her Creator’s cunning. Well the rest<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMight tax his labour to build half such grace,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nYet was that miracle accomplished. Soft<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn roundness, warm in their smooth sweep her thighs<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWere without parallel in Nature’s work.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe greatness of her hips on which life’s girdle<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHad found its ample rest deserved already<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe lap of divine love where she alone<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMight hope one day embosomed by God to lie.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDeep was her navel’s hollow where wound in<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAbove her raiment’s knot that tender line<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf down as slight as the dark ray shot up<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFrom the blue jewel central in her zone.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHer waist was like an altar’s middle small<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd there the triple stair of love was built.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTwin breasts large, lovely, pale with darkened paps<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCould not allow the slender lotus thread<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA passage, on whose either side there waited<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSofter than delicatest flowers the arms<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhich Love victorious in defeat would find<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis chains to bow down the Eternal’s neck.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHer throat adorned the necklace which it wore;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIts sweep and undulation to the breast<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOutmatched the gleaming roundness of its gems.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAbove all this her marvellous face where met<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe golden mother of beauty and delight<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAt once the graces of her lotus throne<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd the soft lustres of the moon. Her smile<\/span><\/p>\n

\nParted the rosy sweetness of her lips<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLike a white flower across a ruddy leaf<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOr pearls that sever lines of coral. Noble<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHer speech dropped nectar from a liquid voice<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo which the co\u00ef<\/font>l’s call seemed rude and harsh<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd sob of smitten lyres a tuneless sound.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nShe had exchanged with the wild woodland deer<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe startled glance of her long lovely eyes<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFluttering like a blue lotus in the wind.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe pencilled long line of her arching brows<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMade vain the beauty of Love’s bow. Her hair’s<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTossed masses put voluptuously to shame <\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nThe mane of lions and the drift of clouds.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo clasp all beauty in a little space<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe who created all this wondrous world<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHad fashioned only her. Throned in her limbs<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAll possibilities of loveliness<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHere crowded to their fair attractive seat<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd now the artist eyes that scan all things<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSaw every symbol and sweet parallel<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf beauty only realised in her.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThen was he satisfied and loved his work.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe sages ranging at their will the stars<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSaw her and knew that this indeed was she<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWho must become by love the beautiful half<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf the fair body of the Lord and all<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis heart. This from the seers of future things<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHer father heard and his high hope renounced<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAll other but the greatest for her spouse.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nShe waited like an offering for the fire.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor to compel himself the divine mind<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe dared not, but remained like a great soul<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhich watches for the destined hour’s approach<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCurbing the impatience of its godlike hopes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut he the spirit of the world, forsaken<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBy that first body of the mother of all<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNor to her second birth yet come, abode<\/span><\/p>\n

\nUnwed, ascetic, stern, mid crowded worlds<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAlone and passionless and unespoused,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Master of the animal life absorbed<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn dreamings, wandering with his demon hordes<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDesireless in the blind desire of things.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAt length he ceased; like sculptured marble still<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo meditation turned he yoked his spirit;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nClothed in the skins of beasts, with ashes smeared<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe sat a silent shape upon the hills.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBelow him curved Himadri’s slope; a soil<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWith fragrance of the musk-deer odorous<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWas round him, where the awful Splendour mused<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMid cedars sprinkled with the sacred dew<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf Ganges. Softly murmuring their chants<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn strains subdued the Kinnar minstrels sang,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOn oil-filled slabs among the resinous herbs<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis grisly hosts sat down, their bodies stained<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWith mineral unguents, bark upon their limbs;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIll-shaped they were and their tremendous hands<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAround their ears had wreathed the hillside’s flowers.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOn the white rocks compact of frozen snow,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis great bull voicing low immortal pride<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPawed with his hoof the argent soil to dust,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAlarmed the bisons fled his gaze; he bellowed<\/span><\/p>\n

\nImpatient of the mountain lion’s roar.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nConcentrating his world-vast energies<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBuilt daily his eternal shape of flame<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe who gives all austerities their fruit,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn what impenetrable and deep desire?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd though to him the worship even of gods<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIs negligible, worship the mountain gave<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd gave his daughter the Great Soul to serve.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNor though to remote trance near beauty brings<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIts lovely danger, was that gift refused.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSurrounded by all sweetness in the world<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe can be passionless who is creation’s king.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nShe brought him daily offering of flowers<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd holy water morn and noon and eve<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd swept the altar of the divine fire<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd heaped his altar-seat of sacred grass,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThen bending over his feet her falling locks<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDrowned all her soft fatigue of gentle toil<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn the cool moonbeams from the Eternal’s head.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSo had they met on summits of the world<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLike the still Spirit and its unwakened force,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNear were they now, yet to each other unknown,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe meditating, she in service bowed.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nClosing awhile her vast and shining lids<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFate over them paused suspended on the hills.<\/span><\/p>\n
