The former senses have been lost and only &quot;to desire&quot;,<br \/>\n&quot;pray&quot; or &quot;ask for&quot; are left in later Sanskrit; but the other<br \/>\nsenses must have existed, as the idea of desiring, asking is never<br \/>\na primary sense of any root, but derived figuratively from<br \/>\nthe physical sense &quot;to go, seek, approach&quot;. We may therefore<br \/>\nrender <\/font><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">&#2312;&#2355;&#2375; <\/font><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">(<i>&#299;l&#803;e<\/i>), either &quot;seek&quot;, &quot;desire&quot;, &quot;adore&quot; or &quot;pray to&quot;.<\/font>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 24pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">&#2346;&#2369;&#2352;&#2379;&#2361;&#2367;&#2340;&#2350;&#2381; <\/font><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">(<i>purohitam<\/i>): Sayana\u2014&quot;Purohita&quot;, or else &quot;placed<br \/>\nin the front of the sacrifice as the <i>&#257;havan&#299;ya <\/i>fire&quot;. The Purohita<br \/>\nof the Veda is the representative power in the sacrifice who stands<br \/>\nin front of the consciousness and the action and conducts it.<br \/>\nThis is always the force of the &quot;placing in front&quot; which is so<br \/>\ncommon an idea in the hymns. Normally, this place belongs to<br \/>\nAgni who leads the sacrifice.<\/font>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 24pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">&#2342;&#2375;&#2357;&#2350;&#2381; <\/font><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">(<i>devam<\/i>): Sayana \u2014 <\/font><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">&#2342;&#2366;&#2344;&#2366;&#2342;&#2367;&#2327;&#2369;&#2339;&#2351;&#2369;&#2325;&#2381;&#2340;&#2350;&#2381; <\/font><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">(<i>d&#257;n&#257;digun&#803;ayuktam<\/i>).<br \/>\nSayana&#8217;s dealing with the word Deva is peculiar. Sometimes<br \/>\nhe renders it simply &quot;god&quot;, sometimes he gives it some root<br \/>\nvalues, <\/font><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">&#2342;&#2366;&#2344; <\/font><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">(<i>d&#257;na<\/i>), <\/font><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">&#2342;&#2375;&#2357;&#2344; <\/font><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">(<i>devana<\/i>), sometimes he makes it mean<br \/>\nthe priest. There is not a single passage in the Veda where the<br \/>\nordinary sense &quot;god&quot;, &quot;divine being&quot; does not give a clear and<br \/>\nsufficient and the best sense. No doubt, the Vedic poets never<br \/>\nleft out of sight its root meaning: the gods are the Shining Ones,<br \/>\nthe Lords of Light as are the Dasyus the Dark or Black Ones, the<br \/>\nsons of Darkness.<\/font><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 0pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font size=\"2\">Page <\/font><br \/>\n<font size=\"2\" face=\"Times New Roman\">\u2013 459<\/font><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 24pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">&#2315;&#2340;&#2381;&#2357;&#2367;&#2332;&#2350;&#2381; <\/font><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\"><i>(r&#803;tvijam):<\/i><b> <\/b> &quot;He who<br \/>\nsacrifices at the right season&quot;<br \/>\nis the outward or ritualistic sense; but <\/font><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">&#2315;&#2340;&#2369; <\/font><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\"><i>(r&#803;tu),<\/i> in the Veda, as<br \/>\nwe shall see, is the order of the truth, its arranged law, time,<br \/>\ncircumstance. Agni is the representative priest who sacrifices<br \/>\naccording to the law, order, season of the Ritam.<\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n<\/font> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 24pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">&#2361;&#2379;&#2340;&#2352;&#2350;&#2381; <\/font><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\"><i>(hot&#257;ram):<\/i> Sayana \u2014<br \/>\n&quot;because he utters the Mantra&quot;<br \/>\nand he quotes <\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">&#2309;&#2361;&#2306; &#2361;&#2379;&#2340;&#2366; &#2360;&#2381;&#2340;&#2380;&#2350;&#2367; <\/font><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\"><i>(aham hot&#257; staumi)<\/i>; but he renders<br \/>\nit sometimes <\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">&#2310;&#2361;&#2381;&#2357;&#2366;&#2340;&#2366; <\/font><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\"><i>(&#257;hv&#257;t&#257;),<\/i> sometimes <\/font><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">&#2361;&#2379;&#2350;&#2344;&#2367;&#2359;&#2381;&#2346;&#2366;&#2342;&#2325;:<\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\"><br \/>\n<i>(homanis&#803;p&#257;dakah&#803;),<\/i> sometimes gives us the choice. Undoubtedly, <\/font><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">&#2361;&#2379;&#2340;&#2366; <\/font><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\"><i>(hot&#257;)<\/i> is the priest of the oblation, who gives the offering, <\/font><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">&#2361;&#2369; <\/font><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\"><i>(hu)<br \/>\n<\/i>to offer, and not <\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">&#2361;&#2370; <\/font><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\"><i>(h&#363;)<\/i> to call. We need not follow him. <\/font><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">&#2352;&#2340;&#2381;&#2344;&#2306; <\/font><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\"><i>(ratnam)<\/i> means &quot;delight&quot;<br \/>\nor Ananda (cf. <\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">&#2352;&#2350;&#2381;
