The essence of the inspiration<br \/>\nalways comes from within but the forms of expression are based on Nature though developed and modified by the selective or<br \/>\ninterpretative sight of the artist.<\/p>\n<p align=\"right\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n <font size=\"2\">6 September 1933 <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n *<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\nA painter can certainly bring home the aspects of the sea and<br \/>\nthe beauty of Nature, but he does it as an artist, in the way of Art. He does it by representation and suggestion, not by mere<br \/>\nreproduction of the object. We may<br \/>\nsay that the top point of the triangle is inspiration and the two points of the base are the study of nature and the study<br \/>\nof tradition.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;margin-left:25pt\"> &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\nNandalal&#8217;s saying is true; but the three have to be combined and<br \/>\ndeveloped and harmonised in their combination to a sufficient degree before they bear the fruit of finished or great art. <\/p>\n<p align=\"right\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\"> <font size=\"2\">10 January 1936 <\/font> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25pt;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n*<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t\t\t<font size=\"2\">Page-685<\/font><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;margin-left:25pt\"> In a letter to me, Nandalal wrote of love as &#8220;the only thing for Art&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;margin-left:25pt\"> &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\nIt is a way of speaking, I suppose, in accordance with his own experience. It is the creative Force which he calls Love<br \/>\n&#8213;others<br \/>\nmight call it by another name because they see it in another aspect. <\/p>\n<p align=\"right\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\"> <font size=\"2\">4 November 1933 <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;margin-left:25pt\"> &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\"><b>Inspiration and the Vital <\/b><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;margin-left:25pt\"> &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;margin-left:25pt\"> For the last two or three days I have been getting inspirations for painting. But I have a question about that. Do these<br \/>\ninspirations come from the vital world? All art comes through the vital. Here [<i>in a painting sent to Sri<\/i> <i>Aurobindo<\/i>] there is colour but no form<br \/>\n&#8213;or only a shapeless<br \/>\nshape &#8213;as if you were trying to get rid of form and paint only forces or indefinite suggestions. But that is contrary to an art<br \/>\nwhich depends on colour, line and design. <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;margin-left:25pt\"> &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<b>Cinema<br \/>\n<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;margin-left:25pt\"> &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\nI see no objection to your going for two or three days to Madras for this purpose [<i>to make a recording<\/i>].
