\n<\/span><\/b>Bepin Pal<\/b> started the Bande Mataram <\/i>with Rs. 500 in his pocket.
\n…He called in my help as assistant editor and I gave it. I called a private
\nmeeting of the young Nationalist leaders in Calcutta and they agreed to take up
\nthe Bande Mataram <\/i>as their party paper with Subodh and Nirod Mullick as
\nthe principal financial supporters. A company was projected and formed, but the
\npaper was financed and kept up meanwhile by Subodh.<\/p>\n

\nThe new party was at once successful and the Bande Mataram <\/i>paper
\nbegan to circulate throughout India. On its staff were not only Bepin Pal and
\nSri Aurobindo but some other very able writers, Shyam Sundar Chakravarty,
\nHemendra Prasad Ghose and Bejoy Chatterjee. Shyam Sundar and Bejoy were masters
\nof the English language, each with a style of his own; Shyam Sundar caught up
\nsomething like Sri Aurobindo’s way of writing and later on many took his
\narticles for Sri Aurobindo’s\u2026. The Bande Mataram <\/i>was almost unique in
\njournalistic history in the influence it exercised in converting the mind of a
\npeople and preparing it for revolution. But its weakness was on the financial
\nside; … So long as Sri Aurobindo was there in active control, he managed with
\ngreat difficulty… but …when he was arrested and held in jail for a year, the
\neconomic situation of the Bande Mataram <\/i>became desperate: finally, it was
\ndecided that the journal should die a glorious death rather than perish by
\nstarvation and Bejoy Chatterjee was commissioned to write an article for which
\nthe Government would certainly stop the publication of the paper\u2026. The
\nmanoeuvre succeeded and the life of the Bande Mataram <\/i>came to an end in
\nSri Aurobindo’s absence.<\/p>\n

\ngeneral title of New Thought <\/i>from April 11 to April 23, 1907. It was
\nbrought out in 1948 in book-form. The last article The Morality of Boycott, <\/i>which
\nhad been produced as an exhibit in the Alipore Conspiracy Case, was also
\nincluded in the book.<\/p>\n
