\n\tEmerson and original sin have never as yet gone together.
\n\tBut Principal Herambachandra Moitra has achieved the impossible. Lecturing
\n\tto a Bombay congregation on a Wednesday he solemnly declared that "even
\n\tchildren themselves are not free from sin," and on the following Sunday
\n\tdiscoursed on "Emerson". Poor sage of Concord! <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tCalcutta is going to have a Tower of Silence for the
\n\tParsis. The
\nPatrika <\/i>would, however, seem to hold that it is more needed by our own
\n\tpatriots. They evidently permit writing in that dreadful place. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t <\/p>\n

\n\tA "veteran" laments the decay of manners among the people
\n\tof this country, in the hospitable columns of the
\nPioneer<\/i>. There was a time, only forty years ago, when on the approach of
\n\ta European, Indian lads would cry "Gora ata Gora ata" and skid. When the
\n\tsame class of lads now "pass a European with a cigarette between their lips
\n\tand stare him calmly in the face," and a "large number of natives salaam
\n\twith their left hands" the world, or the British Empire, which means the
\n\tsame thing, must be nearing its end. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tBengal politicians seem determined to maintain the
\n\tancient reputation of the nation for its logical acumen and subtlety. The
\n\tBarisal Conference resolved not <\/i>to send any prayer or petition to   
\n\t<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t

\n\tGovernment; when the Conference was forcibly dispersed,
\n\tthe leaders sent a wire to the Viceroy on the ground that a telegram was
\n\tsurely not a petition. They have resolved not to approach the
\n\tLieutenant-Governors of the partitioned Provinces with any prayer or
\n\taddress, but may still draw their Honours’ "serious attention" to various
\n\tmatters, public and personal, including the gift of a Deputy Magistracy to
\n\ttheir sons. Surely a cosy place in the Executive Service is not <\/i>a
\n\tmembership of the Legislative Council. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t <\/p>\n

\n\tThere is considerable indignation among the true "Friends
\n\tof India" both in England and in this country, at the "political oration"
\n\tdelivered by Mr. Manmatha Chandra Mallik at the recent Tyabji memorial
\n\tmeeting in London. After this we shall be told that it would be sinful to
\n\tdiscourse on religion at a commemoration service in honour of a Lord Bishop
\n\tof Canterbury or to speak on science at a memorial meeting of a President of
\n\tthe British Association. We think at the recent Tyabji-Bose meeting in
\n\tLondon, Babu Romesh Chandra Dutt must have discoursed, therefore, on the
\n\tgreatness of Islam, and Sir Henry Cotton on the saving grace of
\n\tBrahmo-Theology. We anxiously await full reports of their speeches.
