Did she have these ideas long before she came here?<br \/>\n<\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\">The Mother had been spiritually conscious from her youth, even from her childhood, upward and she had done sadhana and<br \/>\ndeveloped this knowledge very long before she came to India.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<p align=\"right\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t<span lang=\"en-gb\">23 December 1933<br \/>\n<\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t<span lang=\"en-gb\">*<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t<span lang=\"en-gb\">&nbsp;<br \/>\n <\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;margin-left:25pt\">\n\t<span lang=\"en-gb\">In some of the Mother&#8217;s prayers which are addressed to &#8220;<i>divin<\/i><br \/>\n &nbsp;<br \/>\n<i>Maitre<\/i>&#8221; I find the words: &#8220;<i>avec notre divine Mere<\/i>&#8220;. How &nbsp;<br \/>\n  can the Mother and &#8220;<i>divin Maitre<\/i>&#8221; have a &#8220;<i>divine Mere<\/i>&#8220;?<br \/>\n  It is as if the Mother was not the &#8220;<i>divine Mere<\/i>&#8221; and there<br \/>\n&nbsp; was some other Mother, and the &#8220;<i>divin Maitre<\/i>&#8221; was not the<br \/>\n  Transcendent and had also a &#8220;<i>divine Mere<\/i>&#8220;! Or is it that all<br \/>\nthese are addressed to something impersonal? <\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t<span lang=\"en-gb\">The Prayers are mostly written in an identification with the<br \/>\nearth \u2014consciousness. It is the Mother in the lower nature addressing the Mother in the higher nature, the Mother herself<br \/>\ncarrying on the sadhana of the earth \u2014consciousness for the transformation praying to herself above from whom the forces of<br \/>\ntransformation come. This continues till the identification of the earth \u2014consciousness and the higher consciousness is effected.<br \/>\nThe word &#8220;<i>notre<\/i>&#8221; is general, I believe, referring to all born into the earth<br \/>\n\t\u2014consciousness&nbsp; \u2014it does not mean &#8220;the Mother of<br \/>\n\t<\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;text-indent:25px\">\n\t<span lang=\"en-gb\"><br \/>\n\t<font size=\"2\">1 <i>First published in 1932 as <\/i>Pri\u00e8res et Meditations de<br \/>\n\tla Mere<i>, this book is now<\/i><\/font> <i>published as <\/i><br \/>\n\tPri\u00e8res et Meditations <i>(Pondicherry: Sri Aurobindo Ashram, 1990). There<br \/>\n\tis the Mother who is carrying on the sadhana and the Divine Mother, both<br \/>\n\tbeing one but in different poises, and both turn to the<br \/>\n<i>Seigneur<\/i><br \/>\n\tor Divine Master. May I get one copy for myself?<br \/>\n<\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\">The rule is that Mother never gives a copy unless she gets a<br \/>\nletter in French written by the person without help asking for it. He must know<br \/>\nenough French to do that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<p align=\"right\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t<span lang=\"en-gb\">14 September 1936<br \/>\n  <\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t<b><span lang=\"en-gb\"><a name=\"Comments_on_Specific_Pri\u00e8res__\">Comments on<br \/>\n\tSpecific <i>Pri\u00e8res<\/i><br \/>\n\t<\/a><br \/>\n\t<\/span><\/b> <\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;margin-left:25pt\">\n\t<span lang=\"en-gb\">In her prayer of 17 May 1914, the Mother says, &quot;<i>Telles<br \/>\n\tfurent<\/i><br \/>\n\t<i>les deux phrases que j&#8217;<\/i><\/span><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00e9<\/font><span lang=\"en-gb\"><i>crivis<br \/>\n\thier par une sorte de n<\/i><\/span><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00e9<\/font><span lang=\"en-gb\"><i>cessit<\/i><\/span><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00e9<\/font><span lang=\"en-gb\"> <i><br \/>\n\tabsolue. Is its expression<br \/>\n\tnecessary to make it completely powerful? <\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t<span lang=\"en-gb\">It was not meant as a general rule&nbsp; \u2014it was only a<br \/>\n\tnecessity felt with regard to that particular prayer and that experience. It<br \/>\n\tall depends on the person, the condition, the need of the moment or of that<br \/>\n\tstage or phase of the consciousness. These things in spiritual experience<br \/>\n\tare always plastic and variable. Ideas of sadhana or of<br \/>\n\tperfection for oneself or of being an instrument seem flat and insipid.<br \/>\n\tAfter all, the individual does not really exist when considered from the<br \/>\n\tstandpoint of the vast universal movement of consciousness.<br \/>\n\t<\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t<span lang=\"en-gb\">It is correct. Am I then to suppose that the dearth or abundance<br \/>\n\tof experiences in any given case is willed by the Divine? <\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t<span lang=\"en-gb\">To say so has no value unless you realise all things as<br \/>\n\tcoming from the Divine. One who has realised as the Mother had realised in<br \/>\n\tthe midst of terrible sufferings and difficulties that even these came from<br \/>\n\tthe Divine and were preparing her for her work can make spiritual use of<br \/>\n\tsuch an attitude. For others it may lead to wrong conclusions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<p align=\"right\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t<span lang=\"en-gb\">10 May 1934<br \/>\n<\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t<span lang=\"en-gb\">*<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t<span lang=\"en-gb\">&nbsp;<br \/>\n <\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;margin-left:25pt\">\n\t<span lang=\"en-gb\">The Mother, in her prayer of 4 August 1914, says: &quot;<i>Les<\/i><br \/>\n  <i>hommes, pousses par le conflit des forces, accomplissent un<\/i><br \/>\n<i>sublime sacrifice<\/i>&quot; [<i>p. 235<\/i>]. Apparently she refers to the great<br \/>\n\twar; but as a result of that war, has any &quot;<i>pure lumiere<\/i>&quot; filled the<br \/>\n\thearts of men or the &quot;<i>Force Divine<\/i>&quot; spread on earth as she says later<br \/>\n\tin the same prayer; has anything beneficial come<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\"><br \/>\n<font size=\"2\">Page <\/font><font size=\"2\" face=\"Times New Roman\">\u2013 603<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 0pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;margin-left:25pt\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\">out of that chaos? Since the nations are once more preparing<br \/>\nfor war and are in a state of constant conflict, there seems to be no indication<br \/>\nof any change in the inner condition of men. People want war. Even people in a<br \/>\ncountry like India seem to secretly wish for another great war. Hardly anyone<br \/>\nseems to require Peace, Light or Love.<br \/>\n<\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\">There has been a change for the worse&nbsp; \u2014the descent of<br \/>\nthe vital world into the human. On the other hand except in the &quot;possessed&quot;<br \/>\nnations there is a greater longing for peace and feeling that such things ought<br \/>\nnot to happen. India did not get any real touch of the war. However what the<br \/>\nMother was thinking of was an opening to the spiritual truth. That has at least<br \/>\ntried to come. The vital world is very large and far exceeds the human<br \/>\nin extent. But usually it dominates by influence not by descent. What previous vital descents have done is to<br \/>\n\tfalsify the Light that came down as in the history of Christianity where it<br \/>\n\ttook possession of the teaching and distorted it and deprived it of any<br \/>\n\twidespread fulfilment. But the supermind is by definition a Light that<br \/>\n\tcannot be distorted if it acts in its own right and by its own presence. The two states are the silent Brahman and the active Brahman<br \/>\n\tand they can alternate (1st stage), coexist (2d stage), fuse (3d stage). The difficulty, of course, is that Divine Love<br \/>\n\tappears to me too impersonal and cold, that is, lacking in warmth though not<br \/>\n\ta cold harmony. But perhaps Divine Love is not like that.<br \/>\n<\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\">Love cannot be cold&nbsp; \u2014for there is no such thing as cold<br \/>\nlove, but the love of which the Mother speaks in that passage is something very<br \/>\npure, fixed and constant; it does not leap like fire and sink for want of fuel,<br \/>\nbut is steady and all \u2014embracing and selfexistent like the light of the sun.<br \/>\nThere is also a divine love that is personal, but it is not like the ordinary<br \/>\npersonal human love dependent on any return from the person&nbsp; \u2014it is<br \/>\npersonal but not egoistic,&nbsp; \u2014it goes from the real being in the one to the<br \/>\nreal being in the other.
