The words &quot;<i>En fait<\/i>&quot; and &quot;<i>attach<\/i><\/span><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00e9<\/font><span lang=\"en-gb\"><i>e<\/i>&quot;<br \/>\n\ttend to give the impression that after all death is inevitable. But the<br \/>\n\tpreceding sentence (&quot;<i>Si cette croyance<\/i> <\/p>\n<p><i>pouvait \u00eatre rejet<\/i><\/span><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00e9<\/font><span lang=\"en-gb\"><i>e,<br \/>\n\td&#8217;abord de la mentalite consciente, . . . la<\/i><br \/>\n<i>mort ne serait plus in<\/i><\/span><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00e9<\/font><span lang=\"en-gb\"><i>vitable<\/i>&quot;)<br \/>\n\tbrings in an ambiguity because it does not make death so inevitable; it<br \/>\n\tintroduces a condition, an &quot;if&quot; by which death could be avoided. But the<br \/>\n\tcategoricality of the sentence with &quot;<i>En fait<\/i>&quot; rather decreases one&#8217;s<br \/>\n\texpectation of a material immortality. Moreover, the &quot;if&quot; in the other<br \/>\n\tsentence is too formidable to be satisfied.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t<span lang=\"en-gb\">There is no ambiguity that I can see. &quot;<i>En fait<\/i>&quot;<br \/>\n\tand &quot;<i>attach<\/i><\/span><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00e9<\/font><span lang=\"en-gb\"><i>e<\/i>&quot;<br \/>\n\tdo not convey any sense of inevitability. &quot;<i>En fait<\/i>&quot; means simply<br \/>\n\t<\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;text-indent:25px\">\n\t<span lang=\"en-gb\"><br \/>\n\t<font size=\"2\">1 Entretiens avec la Mere<br \/>\n<i>is the Mother&#8217;s translation of her conversations of 1929,<\/i><br \/>\n<i>which were spoken in English. This translation is now published as the first<br \/>\n\tpart of<\/i><br \/>\n\tEntretiens 1929 \u00ad 1931 <i>(Pondicherry: Sri Aurobindo Ashram, 1994). It is at present a fact for certain reasons which are stated,&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u2014due to certain mental and physical circumstances&nbsp; \u2014if these are changed,<br \/>\ndeath is not inevitable any longer. Obviously the alteration can only come &quot;if&quot;<br \/>\ncertain conditions are satisfied&nbsp; \u2014all progress and change by evolution<br \/>\ndepends upon an &quot;if&quot; which gets satisfied. For example, in the conversation<br \/>\n\tabout hostile forces, the Mother speaks about some &quot;<i>etres<\/i><br \/>\n <i>pervers et hostiles de plus grande envergure et d&#8217;une plus haute<\/i><br \/>\n  <i>`&nbsp;&nbsp;\u00b4<\/i><br \/>\n<i>origine que tous ceux dont j&#8217;ai parle jusqu&#8217;a present<\/i>&quot; [<i>p. 69<\/i>].<br \/>\n\tThese new hostiles are not of the lower cosmic plane. If they are of a &quot;<i>plus<br \/>\n\thaute origine<\/i>&quot;, they must belong to the higher worlds. Does this mean<br \/>\n\tthat the hostiles exist in the higher worlds up to the Supramental? <\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t<span lang=\"en-gb\">I believe the Mother was referring to the mental Asuras<br \/>\n\tas opposed to the vital hostiles. There are no hostiles above the mind and<br \/>\n\tcannot be, for it is with the mind that the opposition begins. <\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t<span lang=\"en-gb\">When the <i>Conversations <\/i>were translated, Mother<br \/>\n\tmade certain corrections so as to express the thought better than in the<br \/>\n\toriginal report.<br \/>\n\t<\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"right\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\">19 October 1935 <\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t<span lang=\"en-gb\">*<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t<span lang=\"en-gb\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;margin-left:25pt\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\">In <i>Entretiens <\/i>the Mother speaks of &quot;<i>la marche<br \/>\ninterne de<\/i> <i>l&#8217;univers<\/i>&quot; [<i>p. 100<\/i>]. Is there really an internal<br \/>\nprogress in the universe? Except in a few individuals there is hardly any change<br \/>\nor progress in countries. It seems to me that, internally and externally, the<br \/>\nuniverse is moving in a circle and always&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<span lang=\"en-gb\"><br \/>\n<font size=\"2\">Page <\/font><font size=\"2\" face=\"Times New Roman\">\u2013 642<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;margin-left:25pt\">\n\t<span lang=\"en-gb\">crosses the same points on the circle, but essentially<br \/>\n\tthe quality of the points is the same. <\/span> <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n\t<span lang=\"en-gb\">&quot;<i>Univers<\/i>&quot; in French usually means not the whole<br \/>\n\tuniverse but the &quot;world&quot;&nbsp; \u2014the earth. There must be a progress in the<br \/>\n\tearthconsciousness, otherwise there could have been no evolution.
