\nThe Mother of Dreams<\/a><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tGoddess, supreme Mother of Dream, by thy ivory doors when thou
\nstandest,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWho are they then that come down unto men in thy visions that troop,
\ngroup upon group, down the path of the shadows slanting?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDream after dream, they flash and they gleam with the flame of the stars
\nstill around them;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tShadows at thy side in a darkness ride where the wild fires dance, stars
\nglow and glance and the random meteor glistens;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThere are voices that cry to their kin who reply; voices sweet, at the heart
\nthey beat and ravish the soul as it listens.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWhat then are these lands and these golden sands and these seas more
\nradiant than earth can imagine?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWho are those that pace by the purple waves that race to the cliff-bound
\nfloor of thy jasper shore under skies in which mystery muses,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLapped in moonlight not of our night or plunged in sunshine that is not
\ndiurnal?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWho are they coming thy Oceans roaming with sails whose strands are not
\nmade by hands, an unearthly wind advances?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWhy do they join in a mystic line with those on the sands linking hands in
\nstrange and stately dances?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThou in the air, with a flame in thy hair, the whirl of thy wonders watching,
\n\t\t\t<\/span> <\/p>\n

\nHoldest the night in thy ancient right, mother divine, hyacinthine, with a girdle of beauty defended.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSworded with fire, attracting desire, thy tenebrous kingdom thou keepest,
\n<\/span> <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tStarry-sweet, with the moon at thy feet, now hidden now seen the clouds
\nbetween in the gloom and the drift of thy tresses.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOnly to those whom thy fancy chose, O thou heart-free, is it given to see
\nthy witchcraft and feel thy caresses.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOpen the gate where thy children wait in their world of a beauty
\nundarkened.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHigh-throned on a cloud, victorious, proud I have espied Maghavan ride
\nwhen the armies of wind are behind him;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFood has been given for my tasting from heaven and fruit of immortal
\nsweetness;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nI have drunk wine of the kingdoms divine and have heard the change of music strange from a lyre which our hands cannot master;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDoors have swung wide in the chambers of pride where the Gods reside and the Apsaras dance in their circles faster and faster.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor thou art she whom we first can see when we pass the bounds of the mortal,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThere at the gates of the heavenly states thou hast planted thy wand enchanted over the head of the Yogin waving.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFrom thee are the dream and the shadows that seem and the fugitive lights that delude us;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThine is the shade in which visions are made; sped by thy hands from celestial lands come the souls that rejoice for ever.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nInto thy dream-worlds we pass or look in thy magic glass, then beyond thee we climb out of Space and Time to the peak of divine endeavour.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tRushing from Troy like a cloud on the plains the Trojans thundered,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nJust as a storm comes thundering, thick with the dust of kingdoms,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tEdged with the devious dance of the lightning, so all Troas<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLoud with the roar of the chariots, loud with the vaunt and the war-cry,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tRushed from Troywards gleaming with spears and rolled on enormous.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nJoyous as ever Paris led them glancing in armour,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBrilliant with gold like a bridegroom, playing with death and the battle<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEven as apart in his chamber he played with his beautiful Helen,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTouching her body rejoiced with a low and lyrical laughter,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSo he laughed as he smote his foemen. Round him the arrows,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tRound him the spears of the Argives sang like the voices of maidens<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTrilling the anthem of bridal bliss, the chant hymeneal;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tRound him the warriors fell like flowers strewn at a bridal<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRed with the beauty of blood.<\/span><\/p>\n

LUCIFER<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhat mighty and ineffable desire<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tImpels thee, Sirioth? Thy accustomed calm<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIs potently subverted and the eyes<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThat were a god’s in sweet tranquillity,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nConfess a human warmth, a troubled glow.<\/span><\/p>\n

SIRIOTH<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

\nLucifer, son of Morning, Angel! thou<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tArt mightiest of the architects of fate.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo thee is given with thy magic gaze<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tCompelling mortals as thou leanst sublime<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFrom heaven’s lucent walls, to sway the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIs thy felicity of lesser date,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPrince of the patient and untiring gods,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe gods who work? Dost thou not ever feel<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAngelic weariness usurp the place<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWhere the great flame and the august desire<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWere wont to urge thee on? To me it seems<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThat our eternity is far too long<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor service and there is a word, a thought,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMore godlike.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sirioth, I will speak the word.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLove? It was love that for a trillion years<\/span><\/p>\n

\nGave me the instinct and immense demand<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFor service, for activity. It fades.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnother and more giant passion comes<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tStriding upon me. I behold the world<\/span><\/p>\n

\nImmeasurably vast, I see the heavens<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFull of an azure joy and majesty,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nI see the teeming millions of the stars.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSirioth, how came the Master of the world<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo be the master? Did He seize control<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tPushing some ancient weaker sovereign down<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFrom sway immemorable? Did He come<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBy peaceful ways, permission or inheritance,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo what He is today? Or if indeed<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHe is for ever and for ever rules,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAre there no bounds to His immense domain,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNo obscure corner of unbounded space<\/span><\/p>\n

\nForgotten by His fate, that I may seize<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd make myself an empire as august,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEnjoy a like eternity of rule?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

SIRIOTH<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

\nAngel, these thoughts are mighty as thyself.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBut wilt thou then rebel? If He be great<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo conquer and to punish, what of thee?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tEternity of dreadful poignant pain<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMay be thy fate and not eternal rule.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBetter than still to serve desirelessly,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tPursued by a compulsion dull and fierce,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLooking through all vast time for one brief hour<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOf rest, of respite, but instead to find<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIron necessity and pant in vain<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFor space, for room, for freedom.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFor me the sense of active force within<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSet me to work, as the stars move, the sun<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tResistless flames through space, the stormwind runs.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut I have felt a touch as sweet as spring,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd I have heard a music of delight<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMaddening the heart with the sweet honied stabs<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOf delicate intolerable joy.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhere, where is One to feel the answering bliss?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLucifer, thou from love beganst thy toil.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhat love?<\/span><\/p>\n

Desire august to help, to serve.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThat is not mine. To embrace, to melt and mix<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTwo beings into one, to roll the spirit<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTumbling into a surge of common joy,  \u2014 <\/span> <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t‘Tis this I seek.<\/span><\/p>\n

A bar<\/span><\/p>\n

\nI feel, a prohibition. Someone used<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA word I could not grasp and called it sin.<\/span><\/p>\n

LUCIFER<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe word is new, even as these things are.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

SIRIOTH<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tI know not who he was. He laughed and said,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n“Sin, sin is born into the world, revolt<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd change, in Sirioth and in Lucifer,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe evening and the morning star. Rejoice,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tO world!” And I beheld as in a dream<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLeaping from out thy brain and into mine<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA woman beautiful, of grandiose mien,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nYet terrible, alarming and instinct<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWith nameless menace. And the world was full<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWith clashing and with cries. It seemed to me<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAngels and Gods and men strove violently<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo touch her robe, to occupy the place<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHer beautiful and ominous feet had trod,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCrying, “Daughter of Lucifer, be ours,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tO sweet, adorable and mighty Sin!”<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTherefore I came to thee.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

LUCIFER<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Sirioth, await<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHer birth, if she must be. For this I know,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNecessity rules all the infinite world,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd even He perhaps submits unknown<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo a compulsion. When the time is ripe,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWe will consult once more what we shall do.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEpiphany<\/a><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tImmortal, moveless, calm, alone, august,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA silence throned, to just and to unjust<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOne Lord of still unutterable love,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nI saw Him, Shiva, like a brooding dove<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tClose-winged upon her nest. The outcasts came,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe sinners gathered to that quiet flame,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe demons by the other sterner gods<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRejected from their luminous abodes<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tGathered around the Refuge of the lost<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSoft-smiling on that wild and grisly host.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAll who were refugeless, wretched, unloved,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe wicked and the good together moved<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNaturally to Him, the shelterer sweet,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd found their heaven at their Master’s feet.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe vision changed and in its place there stood<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA Terror red as lightning or as blood.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHis strong right hand a javelin advanced<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd as He shook it, earthquake stumbling danced<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAcross the hemisphere, ruin and plague<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRained out of heaven, disasters swift and vague<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNeighboured, a marching multitude of ills.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis foot strode forward to oppress the hills,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd at the vision of His burning eyes<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe hearts of men grew faint with dread surmise<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOf sin and punishment. Their cry was loud,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n“O master of the stormwind and the cloud,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSpare, Rudra, spare! Show us that other form<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAuspicious, not incarnate wrath and storm.”<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe God of Force, the God of Love are one;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNot least He loves whom most He smites. Alone<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWho towers above fear and plays with grief,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDefeat and death, inherits full relief<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFrom blindness and beholds the single Form,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLove masking Terror, Peace supporting Storm.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Friend of Man helps him with life and death<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tUntil he knows. Then, freed from mortal breath,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nGrief, pain, resentment, terror pass away.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHe feels the joy of the immortal play;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe has the silence and the unflinching force,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHe knows the oneness and the eternal course.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe too is Rudra and thunder and the Fire,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHe Shiva and the white Light no shadows tire,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Strength that rides abroad on Time’s wide wings,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe Calm in the heart of all immortal things.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOn Her Birthday<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\nThe repetition of thy gracious years<\/span><\/p>\n

Brings back once more thy natal morn.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nUpon the crest of youth thy life appears,  \u2014 <\/span> <\/p>\n

A wave upborne.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nAmid the hundreds thronging Ocean’s floor<\/span><\/p>\n

A wave upon the crowded sea<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWith regular rhythm pushing towards the shore<\/span><\/p>\n

Our life must be.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nThe power that moves it is the Ocean’s force<\/span><\/p>\n

Invincible, eternal, free,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd by that impulse it pursues its course<\/span><\/p>\n

Inevitably.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nWe, too, by the Eternal Might are led<\/span><\/p>\n

To whatsoever goal He wills.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOur helm He grasps, our generous sail outspread<\/span><\/p>\n

His strong breath fills.<\/span><\/p>\n

That rings us round.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRejoice and fear not for the waves that swell,<\/span><\/p>\n

The storms that thunder, winds that sweep;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAlways our Captain holds the rudder well,<\/span><\/p>\n

He does not sleep.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nIf in the trough of the enormous sea<\/span><\/p>\n

Thou canst not find the sky for spray,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFear never, for our Sun is there with thee<\/span><\/p>\n

By night and day.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEven those who sink in the victorious flood,<\/span><\/p>\n

Where do they sink? Into His breast.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe who to some gives victory, joy and good,<\/span><\/p>\n

To some gives rest.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut thou, look to the radiant days that wait<\/span><\/p>\n

Beyond the driving rain and storm.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nI have seen the vision of a happier fate<\/span><\/p>\n

Brightening thy form.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nConfident of His grace, expect His will;<\/span><\/p>\n

Let Him lead; though hidden be the bourne,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSee Him in all that happens; that fulfil<\/span><\/p>\n
