\n\t\t\tBut from the dawn and mountains Urvasie<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWent marvelling and glad, not as of old<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA careless beam; for an august constraint,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nUnfelt before, ruled her extravagant grace<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd wayward beauty; and familiar things<\/span><\/p>\n

\nGrew strange to her, and to her eyes came mists<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOf mortal vision. Love was with her there,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut not of Paradise nor that great guest<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tPerpetual who makes his golden couch<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBetween the Opsara’s ever-heaving breasts.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFor this was rapturous, troubled, self-absorbed,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA gracious human presence which she loved,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd wondered at, and hid deep in her heart.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd whether in the immortal’s dance she moved,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA billow, or her fingers like sunbeams<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBrightened the harps of heaven, or going out<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWith the white dawn to bathe in Swerga’s streams,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOr in the woods of Eden wandering,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOr happy sitting under peaceful boughs<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn a great golden evening, all she did,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tCelestial occupations, all she thought<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd all she was, though still the same, had changed.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThere was a happy trouble in her ways<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd movements; her felicitous lashes drooped<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAs with a burden; all her daily acts<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWere like a statue’s imitating life,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNot single-hearted like the sovran Gods.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNow as the days of heaven went by in quiet<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd there was peaceful summer ‘mid the Gods,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn Swerga song increased and dances swayed<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIn multitudinous beauty, jasmine-crowned;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd often in high Indra’s hall the spirits<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tImmortal met to watch the shows divine<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf action and celestial theatre.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\nFor not of earth alone are delicate arts<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd noble imitations, but in heaven<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHave their rich prototypes. So on that day<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBefore a divine audience there was staged<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Choice of Luxmie. Urvasie enacted<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe goddess, Ocean’s child, and M\u00e9naca<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWas Varunie, and other girls of heaven<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAssembled the august desiring Gods.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFull strangely sweet those delicate mimics were;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMoonbeam faces imitated the strength<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd silence of great spirits battle-worn,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd little hands the awful muniments<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOf empire grasped and powers that shake the
\n\t\t\tworld.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThen with a golden wave of arm sublime<\/span><\/p>\n

\nM\u00e9naca towards the warlike consistory,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tUnder half-drooping lashes indicating<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhere calm eternal Vishnu like a cloud<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSat discus-armed, said to her sister bright:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n"Daughter of Ocean, sister, for whom heaven<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIs passionate, thou hast reviewed the powers<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEternal and their dreadful beauty scanned,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd heard their blissful names. Say, unafraid<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBefore these listening faces, whom thou lovest<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAbove all Gods and more than earth and more<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThan joy of Swerga’s streams?" And Urvasie,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMusing with wide unseeing eyes, replied<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn a far voice: "The King Pururavus."<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThen, as a wind among the leaves, there swept<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA gust of laughter through the assembled Gods,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA happy summer sound. But not in mirth<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBharuth, the mighty dramatist of heaven,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tPassionate to see his smooth work marred and
\n\t\t\tspell<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBroken of scenic fancies finely-touched:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t"Since thou hast brought the breath of mortal air<\/span><\/p>\n

\nInto the pure solemnities of heaven,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd since thou givest up to other ends<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThan the one need for which God made thee form,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThy being and hast here transferred from earth<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHuman failure from the divided soul,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMarring my great creation, Urvasie,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tI curse thee to possess thy heart’s desire.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nExiled from Swerga’s streams and golden groves<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThou, by terrestrial Ganges or on sad<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMajestic mountains or in troubled towns,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tEnjoy thy love, but hope not here to breathe<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFelicity in regions built for peace<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOf who, erect in their own nature, keep<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLiving by fated toils the glorious world."<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHe ceased and there was silence of the Gods.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThen Indra answered, smiling, though ill-pleased:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t"Bharuth, not well nor by the fates allowed<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo exile without limit from the skies<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWho of the skies is part. Her wilt thou banish<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFrom the felicity of grove and stream,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMaking our Eden empty of her smiles?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut what felicity in stream or grove<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd she not secret there? And hast thou taxed<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHer passion, yet in passion wouldst deface<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe beautiful world because thy work is vain?"<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBharuth replied, the high poet severe:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t"Irrevocable is the doom pronounced<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOnce by my lips. Fates too are born of song.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBut if of limit thou speakest and the term<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBy nature fixed to the divorce of her<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFrom the felicity in which she moves,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNature that fixed the limit, still effects<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tInevitably its fated ends. For Fate,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe dim great presence, is but nature made<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIrrevocable in its fruits. Let her<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo the pure banks of sacred Ganges wend.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThere she may keep her exile, from of old<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIntended for perfection of the earth<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThrough her sweet change. Heaven too shall flash
\n\t\t\tand grow<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFairer with her returning feet though changed,  \u2014 <\/span> <\/p>\n

\nThough changed, yet lovelier from beneficence.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFor she will come soft with maternal cheeks<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd flushed from nuptial arms and human-blest<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWith touches of the warm delightful earth."<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe said and Urvasie from the dumb place<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd thoughtful presence of the Gods departed<\/span><\/p>\n

\nInto the breezy noon of Swerga. Under<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tGreen well-known boughs laden with nameless fruit<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd over blissful swards and perfect flowers<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd through the wandering alleys she arrived<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo heavenly Ganges where it streams o’er stones;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThere from the banks of summer downward stepped,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOne little golden hand gathering her dress<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAbove her naked knees, and, lovely, passed<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThrough the divine pellucid river on<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTo Swerga’s portals, pausing on the slope<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhich goes toward the world. There she looked down<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWith yearning eyes far into endless space.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBehind her stood the green felicitous peaks<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd trembling tops of woods and pulse of blue<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWith those calm cloudless summits quivering.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAll heaven was behind her, but she sent<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNo look to those eternal seats of joy.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tShe down the sunbeams gazed where mountains rose<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn snow, the bleak and mighty hills of earth,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd virgin forests vast, great infant streams<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd cities young in the heroic dawn<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOf history and insurgent human art<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTitanic on the old stupendous hills.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTowards these she gazed down under eyelids glad.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd to her gazing came Til\u00f4ttama,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBright out of heaven, and clasped her quiet hand<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd murmured softly, "Sister, let us go."<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThen they went down into the waiting world,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe golden women, and through gorges mute<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPast Budricayshwur in the silent snow<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tCame silent to Pururavus Urvasie.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor not in Ilian streets Pururavus<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSojourned, nor in the happy throng of men,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut with the infinite and the lonely hills.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFor he grew weary of walls and luminous carved<\/span><\/p>\n

\nImperial pillars bearing up huge weight<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOf architectural stone, and the long street,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd thoughtful temple wide, and sharp cymbals<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tProtecting the august pure place with sound;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe battled tramp of men, sessions of kings,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe lightning from sharp weapons, jubilant crash<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf chariots, and the Veda’s mighty chant;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe bright booths of the merchants, the loud
\n\t\t\tlooms<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd the smith’s hammer clanging music out,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd stalwart men driving the patient plow<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIndomitable in fierce breath of noon.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOf these he now grew weary and the blaze<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf kingship, its immense and iron toils,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWith one hand shielding in the people’s ease,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWith one hand smiting back the tireless foe,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd difficulty of equal justice cold,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd kind beneficent works harmonious kept<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWith terrible control; the father’s face,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe man’s heart, the steeled intellect of power<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tInsolubly one; and after sleepless nights<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLabouring greatly for a great reward,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFrequent failure and vigorous success,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd sweet reward of voices filial grown.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThese that were once his life, he loved no more.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThey held not his desire nor were alive,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBut pale magnificent ghosts out of the past<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWith sad obsession closing him from warm<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLife and the future in far sunlight gold.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor in his heart and in his musing eyes<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThere was a light on the cold snows, a blush<\/span><\/p>\n

\nUpon the virgin quiet of the East<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd storm and slowly-lifting lids. Therefore<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe left the city Ilian and plains<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\nWhence with a mighty motion eastward flows<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tGanges, heroical and young, a swift<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMother of strenuous nations, nor yet reaches<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHer musing age in ardent deep Bengal.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe journeyed to the cold north and the hills<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAustere, past Budricayshwur ever north,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTill, in the sixth month of his pilgrimage<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tUneasy, to a silent place he came<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWithin a heaped enormous region piled<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWith prone far-drifting hills, huge peaks
\n\t\t\to’erwhelmed<\/span><\/p>\n

\nUnder the vast illimitable snows,  \u2014 <\/span> <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSnow on ravine, and snow on cliff, and snow<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSweeping in strenuous outlines to heaven,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWith distant gleaming vales and turbulent rocks,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nGiant precipices black-hewn and bold<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDaring the universal whiteness; last,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA mystic gorge into some secret world.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHe in that region waste and wonderful<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSojourned, and morning-star and evening-star<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tShone over him and faded, and immense<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDarkness wrapped the hushed mountain solitudes<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd moonlight’s brilliant muse and the cold stars<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd day upon the summits brightening.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBut ere day grew the hero nympholept<\/span><\/p>\n

\nClimbed the immortal summits towards the dawn<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd came with falling evening down and lay<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWatching the marvellous sky, but called not sleep<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThat beat her gentle wings over his eyes,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNor food he needed who was grown a god.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd in the seventh month of his waiting long<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSummit or cliff he climbed no more, but added<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTo the surrounding hush sat motionless,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nGazing towards the dim unfathomed gorge.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSix days he sat and on the seventh they came<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThrough the dumb gorge, a breath of heaven, a stir,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThen Eden’s girls stepping with moonbeam feet<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOver the barren rocks and dazzling snows,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThat grew less dazzling, their tresses half
\n\t\t\tunbound<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd delicate raiment girdled enchantingly.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSilent the perfect presences of heaven<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCame towards him and stood a little away,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLike flowers waiting for a sunbeam. He<\/span><\/p>\n

\nStirred not, but without voice, in vision merged,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSat, as one sleeping momently expects<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe end of a dear dream he sees, and knows<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIt is a dream, and quietly resigned<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWaits for the fragile bliss to break or fade.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThen nearer drew divine Til\u00f4ttama<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd stood before his silence statuesque,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHolding her sister’s hand; for she hung back,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNot as an earthly maiden, cheeks suffused,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLids drooping, but as men from patience called<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBefore supreme felicity hang back,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA little awed, a little doubtful, fearing<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTo enter radiant Paradise, so bright<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIt seems; thus she and quailed before her bliss.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBut her sister, extending one bright arm:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n"Pururavus, thou hast conquered and I bring<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNo dream into thy life, but Urvasie."<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd at that name the strong Pururavus<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tRose swaying to his feet like one struck blind;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOr when a great thought flashes through his brain,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA poet starts up and almost cries aloud<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAs at a voice,  \u2014  so he arose and heard.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd slowly said divine Til\u00f4ttama:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t"Yet, son of Ila, one is man and other<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Opsaras of heaven, daughters of the sea,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tUnlimited in being, Ocean-like.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThey not to one lord yield nor in one face<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLimit the universe, but like sweet air,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWater unowned and beautiful common light<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIn unrestrained surrender remain pure.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn patient paths of Nature upon earth <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd over all the toiling stars we fill<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWith sacred passion large high-venturing spirits<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd visit them with bliss; so are they moved<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo immense creative anguish, glad if through<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHeart-breaking toil once in bare seasons dawn<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOur golden breasts between their hands or rush<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOur passionate presence on them like a wave.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn heaven bright-limbed with bodily embrace<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWe clasp the Gods, and clasp the souls of men,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd know with winds and flowers liberty.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBut what hast thou with us or winds or flowers?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nO thou who wast so white, wilt thou not keep<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThy pure and lonely eminence and move<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor ever towards morning like a star?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOr as thy earthly Ganges rolling down<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBetween the homes and passionate deeds of men,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd bearing many boats and white with oars,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFrom all that life quite separate, only lives<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTowards Ocean, so thou doest human work,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMaking a mighty nation, doing high<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd necessary deeds, but, all untouched<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBy action, livest in thy soul apart<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd to the immortal zenith climbest pure.”<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut he, blind as from dazzling dreams, said low:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t“One I thought spoke far-off of purity<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd whiteness and the human soul in God.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThese things were with me once, but now I see<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Spring a golden child and shaken fields.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAll beautiful things draw near and come to me.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nI dream upon a woman’s glorious breasts,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd watch the dew-drop and am glad with birds,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd love the perfect coilings of the snake,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd cry with fire in the burning trees,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLife in sunlight and by delightful streams<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThou shalt enjoy her; and for one year where<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe busy tramp of men goes ceaseless by,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPanting, with inarticulate murmurs lay,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLike a slim tree half seen through driving hail,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHer naked arms clasping his neck, her cheek<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd golden throat averted, and wide trouble<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn her large eyes bewildered with their bliss.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAmid her wind-blown hair their faces met.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWith her sweet limbs all his, feeling her breasts<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTumultuous up against his beating heart,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe kissed the glorious mouth of heaven’s desire.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSo clung they as two shipwrecked in a surge.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThen strong Pururavus, with godlike eyes<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMastering hers, cried tremulous: “O beloved,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nO miser of thy rich and happy voice,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOne word, one word to tell me that thou lovest.”<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd Urvasie, all broken on his bosom,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHer godhead in his passion lost, moaned out<\/span><\/p>\n
