\nIn Bagdad by Euphrates, Asia’s river,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tEuphrates that through deserts must deliver<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe voices which of human daybreaks are<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tInto the dim mysterious surge afar,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Arabian dwelt; after long travel he.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tRegions deserted, wastes of silent sea,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWide Ocean ignorant of ships and lands<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNever made glad by toil of mortal hands<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor he had seen, the Indian mountains bare<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSave of hard snow and the unbreathed huge air<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd swum through giant waters and had heard<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIn those unhuman forests beast and bird,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe peacock’s cry and tiger’s hoarse appeal<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tCalling to God for prey, marked the vast wheel<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf monstrous birds shadowing whole countries; he<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFrom Singhal through the long infinity<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf southern floods had steered his shuddering ship<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWhere unknown winds their lonely tumult keep.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd he had lived with strong and pitiless men,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNations unhumanized by joy and pain,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd he had tasted grain not sown by man<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd drunk strange milk in weird Mazinderan.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSilent he was, as one whom thoughts attend,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDistant, whom stiller hearts than ours befriend.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe lived with memories only; no sweet voice<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMade the mute echoes of his life rejoice;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNo lovely face of children brought the dawn<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tInto his home; but silent, calm, withdrawn,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe watched the ways of men with godlike eyes<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tReleased from trammelling affinities.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nYet was he young and many women strove<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tVainly to win his marble mind to love.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOne day when wind had fled to the cool north<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd the strong earth was blind with summer, forth<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Arabian rode from great Bagdad and turned<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tInto the desert. All around him burned<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe imprisoned spirit of fire; above his head<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe sky was like a tyranny outspread,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe sun a fire in those heavens, and fire<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe sands beneath; the air burning desire<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd breathless, a plumb weight of flame; yet rode<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe Arabian unfeeling like a god.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThree hours he rode and now no more was seen<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBagdad, the imperial city, nor aught green,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut the illimitable sands around<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tExtend, a silent world waiting for sound,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhen in the distance he descried a grace<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOf motion beautiful in that dead place.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWondering he turned, but suddenly the horse<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tPricked up his slender ears, swerved from the course<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd pawing stood the unwilling air, nor heard<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe guiding voice nor the familiar word.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhinnying with wrath he smote the desert sand<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd mocked the rein and raged at the command.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThen raised the man his face and saw above<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNo cloud with the stark face of heaven strove,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA single blaze of light from pole to pole.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSmiling the Arabian spoke unto his soul.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n“Here too then are you strong, O influences<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThat trouble the earth and air and the strong seas!<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTherefore I will not stay your gathering wings<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWho watch me from the air, you living things,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut go to find whatever peril or wonder<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWait me of life above the earth or under.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nStrange will it be if quiet Bagdad yield<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMore terror or more sweetness than in field<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHas stayed me yet or in untravelled flood<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOr mountain or the tiger-throated wood.”<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSo saying he grasped the strong and shaken mane<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd set swift footing on the fiery plain.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAt once the beast as if by sorcery<\/span><\/p>\n

\nStrangely compelled, calmed his impetuous eye;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHis angry tremor ceased and bounding wrath<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFollowing unbidden in the Arabian’s path.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBut he with silent toil the sands untried<\/span><\/p>\n

\nVanquishing through that luminous world and wide<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWent a slow shadow, till his feet untired<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe fruit of all his labour long acquired.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBefore a mile complete he was aware<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf a strange shape of beauty sitting there<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOn a sole boulder in the level wild,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMaiden, a marvellous bloom, a naked child;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAll like a lily from her leaves escaped<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe golden summer kissed her close and wrapped<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIn soft revealing sunshine, 
\n\t\t\t\u2014  a sweet bareness,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA creature made of flowers and choicest fairness;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd all her limbs were like a luminous dream,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSo wonderfully white they burn and gleam,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHer shoulder ivory richly bathed in gold,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHer sides a snowy wonder to behold,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMarble made amorous; her body fair<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSeemed one with the divine, translucent air,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA light within the light, a glorious treasure,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA thing to hold, to kiss, to slay with pleasure.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThis girl was not alone, but with her watched<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTwo shapes of beauty and of terror hatched,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA strong, fierce snake, round her sweet middle twined,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA tigress at her lovely feet reclined.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDreaming on those tremendous sands she waited<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd often with that splendour miscreated<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tPlayed thoughtfully, about her wondrous knees<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBinding the brilliant death or would increase<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe whiteness of her limbs with its fierce hues<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOr twine it in her tresses flowing loose.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBelow that other restless evil played,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe fierce, sleek terror on the sands outspread.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFirst of the wonderful three rose with a bound<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWaking the desert from its sleep with sound<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe tigress, but the Arabian strode more near<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAs one who had forgotten how to fear<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd frowning like a god with kingly look<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHe threatened the preparing death and shook<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis javelin in the sun. Back crouched the fiend<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAmazed nor could the steely light attend<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNor that unconquerable glance; yet lowered<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTo find her dreadful violence overpowered<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBy any smaller thing than death; and he<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHeeded no more crouched limb nor stealthy eye.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe on that flowerlike shape a moment gazed<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAs one by strange felicity amazed,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWho long grown sorrow’s friend his whole life grieves,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBlest beyond expectation, scarce believes<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThat joy is in his heart  \u2014  so gazed, so laid<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAt last upon the white and gleaming maid<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe question of his hands. O soft and real<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe nakedness he grasped, no marble ideal<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBorn of the blazing light and infinite air,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA breathing woman with lovely limbs and bare.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThen with a strong melodious voice he cried<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd all his cheek was flushed with royal pride.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n“Thou then art mine, after long labour mine,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tO earthly body and O soul divine,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAfter long labour and thy sounding home<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHast left and caverns where thy sisters roam,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nO dweller where the austral tempest raves!<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tO daughter of the wild and beautiful waves!<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAh breasts of beauty! Ah delicious shoulder!<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLeading from bliss to bliss the hands that hold her,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAt length I grasp you then and snared at length<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe ivory swiftness of thy feet and strength<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf this immortal body shaped for kings,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tO memory of sweet and dreadful things!<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAh welcome to the streets that human tread<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMakes musical and joy of human bread<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBroken between dry hands and to the sight<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf the untroubled narrow rivers, light<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOf lamps and warmth of kindled fires and man.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFairer shall be thy feet on greensward than<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOn ocean rocks and O! more bright thy beauty<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor human passion and for womanly duty<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd softer in my bosom shalt thou sleep<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThan lulled by the sublime and monstrous deep.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMuch have I laboured; the resplendent face<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf summer I have hated, as the days<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWent by and no delightful brook was found<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSprinkling with earth’s cool love the ruthless ground,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd in my throat there was a desert’s thirst<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd on my tongue a fire: I have cursed<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe spring and all its flowers: the wrathful cry<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf the wild waters and their cruelty<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tI have endured, labouring with sail and oar<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThrough the mad tempest for some human shore<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd fought with winds, and seen vast Hell aflame<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDown in the nether flood till I became<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBlind with the sight of those abysmal graves<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd deaf with the eternal sound of waves<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd all my heart was broken alone to be<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDay after day with the unending sea.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd much on land I have laboured without moan<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOr weakening tears making my heart a stone.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBut thou art come and I shall hear no more<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBy inexorable rocks the Ocean roar,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNor pine in dungeons far from pity or aid.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut in far other prison, seaborn maid,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThy limbs shall minister to my delight<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEven as an ordinary woman’s might.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd I shall hear thy voice around my heart<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLike a cool rivulet and shall not start<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTo see thee ivory gleaming and all night<\/span><\/p>\n

\nShall feel thee in my arms, O darling white  \u2014 <\/span> <\/p>\n

\nCompel and the light touch of little hands<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSo as he spoke, the silent desert air<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLived with his gladness, and the maiden there<\/span><\/p>\n

\nListened with downcast lids and a soft flush<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tUpon her like the coming of a blush.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut when he finished and the air was mute,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tShe laughed with happy lips most like a flute<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOr voice of cuckoo in an Indian grove<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWaking the heart to vague delightful love.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd with divine eyes gleaming where strange mirth<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA smiling mischief was, the living girth<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf her delicious waist she suddenly<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tUnbound and by the middle lifting high<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBetwixt them shook. Hissed the fierce snake and raised<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIts jewelled hood for spotted radiance praised,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIts jewelled hood to the dread leap distended:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSad limit of noble life, had that descended<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSince short his breath and evil, who that pang<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tExperienced; but before the serpent sprang,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWrathful, the Arabian seized the glittering neck<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd twines of bronze burning with many a fleck<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf coloured fire. His angry grasp to quell<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tVainly the formidable folds rebel:<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNot all that gordian force and slippery strength<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOf coils availed. Inanimate at length,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe immense destroyer on the Arabian’s wrist<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHung in a ruin loose; and to resist<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis wrath of love none now might intervene,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNor she deny him. Yet with tranquil mien<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSmiling she sat and swept with noble gesture<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHer hair back that had fallen a purple investure<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOver her glowing grace. Strong arms he cast<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAround her naked loveliness and fast<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tShowered kisses on her limbs whose marble white<\/span><\/p>\n

\nGrew woman with a soft and rosy light<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIn each kissed place. “Deemedst thou then,” he cried,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n“Bright fugitive, lovely wanderer with the tide,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBy shaking death before death-practised eyes<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMy crown to wrest of strenuous enterprise,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThyself, thyself and beauty? O too sweet<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo touch our hard earth with thy faultless feet!<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tYet on hard earth must dwell. For with the ground<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThy dreadful guardians who have fenced thee round<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAre equalled, and thyself, sweet, though thou shame<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe winds with swiftness or like mounting flame<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tStrive all thy days in my imprisoning arms,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCouldst burn thyself no exit. With alarms<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMenace and shapes of death; call on the flood<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor thy deliverance on these sands to intrude<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd lead thee to its jealous waters rude;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut hands that have flung back the swallowing sea<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tShall stay and chastise and habituate thee<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo service due.” He said and with the words<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe power in his soul increased, as birds<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWith sounds encourage love and like great waves<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tExulting, rose against the breasts he craves,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSo he engrossed the lovely limbs. Then grasping<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHer fair soft arm in one hand, the other clasping<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHer smooth desired thighs, from that rude seat,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe grey sun-blistered boulder most unmeet<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTo bear her snowwhite radiance, lifted. She<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAs to his horse he bore her mightily,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA little strove in his strong arms, but round<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHer lithe, reluctant limbs closer he bound<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHis despot hands and on the saddle set<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNever with such sweet rider burdened yet.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThen to his seat he sprang and musical<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tCostly or fragrant upon earth or lives<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf riches in the hoarding ocean lost<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd all bright things with gold or gems embossed<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBy Indian or by Syrian art refined<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd all rich cloths and silks with jewels lined<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRegal Bokhara weaves or Samarcand,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIncreased and gathered to Alnuman’s hand<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd girls of glorious limb and feature he<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBought for his slaves, of rose and ivory,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor he indeed was mighty in the town,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe mullahs to his will interpreted<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTheir books and the law’s lightning from his head<\/span><\/p>\n

\nGlanced on the rash accuser; for his word<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWas H\u00e9doya  before the Kazi heard.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBut whence the fountain of his wealth might flow,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWell did the sad and toiling peasant know.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFor he as governor in Khorassan<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHad held the balance betwixt man and man<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd justified his rule benevolent<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBy rape and torture for their own good meant,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe fallen rooftree and the broken door<\/span><\/p>\n
