\n\t\t\tThrough darkness and immense dim night he went<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMid phantom outlines of approaching trees,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd all the day in green leaves, till he came<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo peopled forests and sweet clamorous streams<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd marvellous shining meadows where he lived<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWith Urvasie his love in seasons old.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThese like domestic faces waiting were.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe knew each wind-blown tree, each different field;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd could distinguish all the sounding rivers<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEach by its own voice and peculiar flow.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHere were the happy shades where they had lain<\/span><\/p>\n

\nInarmed and murmuring, here half-lustrous groves<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tStill voiceful with a sacred sound at noon,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd these the rivers from her beauty bright.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThere straying in field and forest he to each<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFamiliar spot so full of her would speak,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tPausing by banks and memorable trees.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n"O sacred fig-tree, under thee she paused<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMusing amid her tresses, and her eyes<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWere sweet and grave. And, O delicious shade,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThou hast experienced brightness from her feet,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nO cool and dark green shelterer, perfect place!<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd lo! the boughs all ruinous towards earth<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWith blossoms. Here she lay, her arms thrown back,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSmiling up to me, and the flowers rained<\/span><\/p>\n

\nUpon her lips and eyes and bosom bare.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd here a secret opening where she stood<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWaiting in narrow twilight; round her all<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWas green and secret with a mystic, dewy<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHalf invitation into emerald worlds.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tO river, from thee she moved towards the glade<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBreathing and wet and fresh as if a flower<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAll bare from rain. And thou, great holy glade,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSawest her face maternal o’er her child."<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThen ceasing he would wait and listen, half<\/span><\/p>\n

\nExpecting her. But all was silent; only<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tPerhaps a bird darted bright-winged away,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOr a grey snake slipped through the brilliant leaves.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThus wandering, thus in every mindful place<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRenewing old forgotten scenes that rose,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tGleam after gleam, upon his mind, as stars<\/span><\/p>\n

\nReturn at night; thus drawing from his heart<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWhere they lay covered, old sweet incidents<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo live before his eyes; thus calling back<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tUncertain moods, brief moments of her face,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd transient postures strangely beautiful,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tPleasures, and little happy mists of tears<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHeart-freeing, he, materializing dreams,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tUpon her very body almost seized.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAlways a sense of imperfection slipped<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBetween him and that passionate success.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTherefore he murmured at last unsatisfied:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t"She is not here; though every mystic glade<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd sunbright pasture breathe alone of her<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd quiver as with her presence, I find not<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHer very limbs, her very face; yet dreamed<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThat here infallibly I should restrain<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHer fugitive feet or hold her by the robe.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tO once she was the luminous soul of these,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd in her body lived the summer and spring<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd seed and blossoming, ripening and fall,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHiding of Beauty in the wood and glen,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd flashing out into the sunlit fields<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAll flowers and laughter. All the happy moods<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd all the beautiful amorous ways of earth<\/span><\/p>\n

\nShe was; but they now seem only her dress<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLeft by her. Therefore, O ye seaward rivers,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nO forests, since ye have deceived my hope,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tI go from you to dazzling cruel ravines<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd find her on inclement mountains pure."<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe hero self-discrowned, Pururavus,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWent swiftly up the burning plains and through<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe portals of the old Saivaalic hills<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTo the inferior heights, nor lingered long,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThough pulsing with fierce memories, though thrilled<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWith shocks of a great passion touching earth;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut plunged o’er difficult gorge and prone ravine<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd rivers thundering between dim walls,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDriven by immense desire, until he came<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTo dreadful silence of the peaks and trod<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRegions as vast and lonely as his love.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThen with a confident sublime appeal<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe to the listening summits stretched his hands:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t"O desolate strong Himalaya, great<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThy peaks alone with heaven and dreadful hush<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIn which the Soul of all the world is felt<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMeditating creation! Thou, O mountain,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMy bridal chamber wast. On thee we lay<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWith summits towards the moon or with near stars<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWatching us in some wild inhuman vale,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThy silence over us like a coverlid<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOr a far avalanche for bridal song.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLo, she is fled into your silences!<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tI come to you, O mountains, with a heart<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDesolate like you, like you snow-swept, and stretch<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTowards your solemn summits kindred hands.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nGive back to me, O mountains, give her back."<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHe ceased and Himalaya bent towards him, white.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe mountains seemed to recognize a soul<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tImmense as they, reaching as they to heaven<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd capable of infinite solitude.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLong he, in meditation deep immersed,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nStrove to dissolve his soul among the hills<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tInto the thought of Urvasie. The snow<\/span><\/p>\n

\nStole down from heaven and touched his cheek and hair,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe storm-blast from the peaks leaped down and
\n\t\t\tsmote<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut woke him not, and the white drops in vain<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\nFroze in his locks or crusted all his garb.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFor he lived only with his passionate heart.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut as the months with slow unnoticed tread<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tPassed o’er the hills nor brought sweet change of
\n\t\t\tspring<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNor autumn wet with dew, a voice at last<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMoved from far heavens, other than our sky.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd he arose as one impelled and came<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tPast the supreme great ridges northward, came<\/span><\/p>\n

\nInto the wonderful land far up the world<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDim-looming, where the Northern Kurus dwell,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe ancients of the world, invisible,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAmong forgotten mists. Through mists he moved<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFeeling a sense of unseen cities, hearing<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNo sound, nor seeing face, but conscious ever<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf an immense traditionary life<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThrobbing round him and dreams historical.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor as he went, old kingly memories surged,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd with vast forward faces driving came<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOrigins and stabilities and empires,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHuge passionate creations, impulses<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNational realizing themselves in stone.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLastly with rolling of the mists afar<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe saw beneath him the primeval rocks<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tPlunge down into the valley, and upsoar<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo light wide thoughtful domes and measureless<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tRamparts, and mid them in a glory walk<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe ancients of the world with eyes august.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNext towards the sun he looked and saw enthroned<\/span><\/p>\n

\nUpon the summit one whose regal hair<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tCrowned her, and purple in waves down to her feet<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFlowed, Indira, the goddess, Ocean’s child,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tGiver of empire who all beauty keeps<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBetween her hands, all glory, all wealth, all power.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSevere and beautiful she leaned her face.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n"What passion, Ilian Pururavus,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHas led thee here to my great capital<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd ancient men in the forgotten mists,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe fathers of the Aryan race? Of glory<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tEnamoured hast thou come, or for thy people<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEmpire soliciting? But other beauty<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIs on thy brow and light no longer mine.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nYet not for self wast thou of virgin born,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tPerfect, and the aerial paths of gods<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPermitted to thy steps; nor for themselves,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBut to the voice of Vedic litanies,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSacredly placed are the dread crowns of Kings<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFor bright felicities and cruel toils.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd thou, O Ilian Pururavus,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFor passion dost thou leave thy strenuous
\n\t\t\tgrandeurs,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA nation’s destinies, and hast not feared<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe sad inferior Ganges lapsing down<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWith mournful rumour through the shades of Hell?"<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThen with calm eyes the hero Ilian:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n"O Goddess, patroness of Aryasthan,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLover of banyan and of lotus, I<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNot from the fear of Hell or hope of Heaven<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDo good or ill. Reigning I reigned o’er self,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd with a kingly soul did kingly deeds.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNow driven by a termless wide desire<\/span><\/p>\n

\nI wander over snow and countries vague."<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd like a viol Luxmie answered him:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n"Sprung of the moon, thy grandsire’s fault in thee<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tYet lives; but since thy love is singly great,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDoubtless thou shalt possess thy whole desire.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tYet hast thou maimed the future and discrowned<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Aryan people; for though Ila’s sons,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIn Hustina, the city of elephants,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd Indraprustha, future towns, shall rule<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDrawing my peoples to one sceptre, at last<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTheir power by excess of beauty falls,  \u2014 <\/span> <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThy sin, Pururavus  \u2014  of beauty and
\n\t\t\tlove:<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd this the land divine to impure grasp<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tYields of barbarians from the outer shores."<\/span><\/p>\n

\nShe ceased and the oblivious mists rolled down.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut the strong hero uncrowned, Pururavus,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tEastward, all dreaming with his great desire,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWandered as when a man in sleep arises,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd goes into the night, and under stars<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThrough the black spaces moves, nor knows his feet<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNor where they guide him, but dread unseen power<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWalks by him and leads his unerring steps<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTo some weird forest or gaunt mountain-side;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThere he awakes, a horror in his soul,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd shudders alien amid places strange.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSo wandered, driven by an unknown power,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tPururavus. Over hushed dreadful hills<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd snows more breathless to the quiet banks<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOf a wide lake mid rocks and bending woods<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe came, and saw calm mountains over it,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd knew in his awed heart the hill of God,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCoilas, and Mainaac with its summits gold.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAwed he in heart, yet with a quicker stride<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe moved and eyes of silent joy, like one<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWho coming from long travel, sees the old<\/span><\/p>\n

\nVillage and children’s faces at the doors.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIn a wild faery place where mountain streams<\/span><\/p>\n

\nGlimmer from the dim rocks and meet the lake<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAmid a wrestle of tangled trees and heaped<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMoss-grown disordered stones, and all the water<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIs hidden with its lotuses and sways<\/span><\/p>\n

\nShimmering between leaves or strains through bloom,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tShe sat, the mother of the Aryans, white<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWith a sublime pallor beneath her hair.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMusing, with wide creative brows, she sat<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn a slight lovely dress fastened with flowers,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAll heaped with her large tresses. Golden swans<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPreened in the waters by her dipping feet.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOne hand propped her fair marble cheek, the other<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe mystic lotus hardly held. Seeing her<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tPururavus bent to her and adored.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd she looked up and musing towards him<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\nSaid low: "O son, I knew thy steps afar.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOf me thou wast; for as I suffered rapture,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nInvaded by the sea of images<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBreaking upon me from all winds, and saw<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIndus and Ganges with prophetic mind,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA virginal impulse gleamed from my bosom<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd on the earth took beauty and form. I saw<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThee from that glory issue and rejoiced.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut now thou comest quite discrowned. From me,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tO son, thou hadst the impulse beautiful<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThat made thy soul all colour. For I strive<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTowards the insufferable heights and flash<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWith haloes of that sacred light intense.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBut lo! the spring and all its flowers, and lo!<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHow bright the Soma juice. What golden joys,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWhat living passions, what immortal tears!<\/span><\/p>\n

\nI lift the veil that hides the Immortal  \u2014  Ah!<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMy lids faint. Ah! the veil was lovelier.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMy flowers wither in that height, my swan<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSpreads not his wings felicitous so far.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nO one day I shall turn from the great verse<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd marble aspiration to sing sweetly<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf lovers and the pomps of wealth and wine<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd warm delights and warm desires and earth.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nO mine own son, Pururavus, I fall<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBy thy vast failure from my dazzling skies."<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd Ila’s son made answer, "O white-armed,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tO mother of the Aryans, of my life<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCreatress! fates colossal overrule.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBut lo! I wander like a wave, nor find<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLimit to the desire that wastes my soul."<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThen with a sweet immortal smile the mother<\/span><\/p>\n

\nGave to him in the hollow of her hand<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWonderful water of the lake. He drank,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd understood infinity, and saw<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTime like a snake coiling among the stars;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd earth he saw, and mortal nights and days<\/span><\/p>\n

\nGrew to him moments, and his limbs became<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tUndying and his thoughts as marble endured.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThen to the hero deified the goddess,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t"O strong immortal, now pursue thy joy:<\/span><\/p>\n

\nYet first rise up the peaks of Coilas; there<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe Mighty Mother sits, whose sovran voice<\/span><\/p>\n

\nShall ratify to thee thy future fair,"<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSaid and caressed his brow with lips divine.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd bright Pururavus rose up the hill<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTowards the breathless summit. Thence, enshrined<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn deep concealing glories, came a voice,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd clearer he discerned as one whose eyes,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLong cognizant of darkness, coming forth,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tGrow gradually habituated to light,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe calm compassionate face, the heaven-wide brow,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd the robust great limbs that bear the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nProphetical and deep her voice came down:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t"Thou then hast failed, bright soul; but God
\n\t\t\tblames not<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNor punishes. Impartially he deals<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTo every strenuous spirit its chosen reward.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd since no work, however maimed, no smallest<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tEnergy added to the mighty sum<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf action fails of its exact result,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tEmpire shall in thy line and forceful brain<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPersist, the boundless impulse towards rule<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOf grandiose souls perpetually recur,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd minds immense and personalities<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWith battle and with passion and with storm<\/span><\/p>\n

\nShall burn through Aryan history, the speech<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOf ages. In thy line the Spirit Supreme<\/span><\/p>\n

\nShall bound existence with one human form;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIn Mathura and ocean Dwarca Man<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEarthly perfectibility of soul<\/span><\/p>\n
