\n <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSilence is round me, wideness ineffable;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhite birds on the ocean diving and wandering;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA soundless sea on a voiceless heaven,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAzure on azure, is mutely gazing.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIdentified with silence and boundlessness<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMy spirit widens clasping the universe<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTill all that seemed becomes the Real,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOne in a mighty and single vastness.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSomeone broods there nameless and bodiless,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nConscious and lonely, deathless and infinite,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd, sole in a still eternal rapture,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tGathers all things to his heart for ever.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTrance of Waiting<\/a><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\nLone on my summits of calm I have brooded with voices around me,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMurmurs of silence that steep mind in a luminous sleep,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhispers from things beyond thought in the Secrecy flame-white for ever,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tUnscanned heights that reply seek from the inconscient deep.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDistant below me the ocean of life with its passionate surges<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tPales like a pool that is stirred by the wings of a shadowy bird.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThought has flown back from its wheelings and stoopings, the
\nnerve-beat of living<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tStills; my spirit at peace bathes in a mighty release.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWisdom supernal looks down on me, Knowledge mind cannot measure;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLight that no vision can render garments the silence with splendour.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFilled with a rapturous Presence the crowded spaces of being<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTremble with the Fire that knows, thrill with the might of repose.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEarth is now girdled with trance and Heaven is put round her for vesture.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWings that are brilliant with fate sleep at Eternity’s gate.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTime waits, vacant, the Lightning that kindles, the Word that
\ntransfigures;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSpace is a stillness of God building his earthly abode.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAll waits hushed for the fiat to come and the tread of the Eternal;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tPassion of a bliss yet to be sweeps from Infinity’s sea.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFlame-Wind<\/a><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA flame-wind ran from the gold of the east,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLeaped on my soul with the breath of a sevenfold noon.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWings of the angel, gallop of the beast!<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMind and body on fire, but the heart in swoon.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tO flame, thou bringest the strength of the noon,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut where are the voices of morn and the stillness of eve?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWhere the pale-blue wine of the moon?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMind and life are in flower, but the heart must grieve.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tGold in the mind and the life-flame’s red<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMake of the heavens a splendour, the earth a blaze,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBut the white and rose of the heart are dead.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFlame-wind, pass! I will wait for Love in the silent ways.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe River<\/a><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWild river in thy cataract far-rumoured and rash rapids to sea
\nhasting,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFar now is that birth-place mid abrupt mountains and slow
\ndreaming of lone valleys<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWhere only with blue heavens was rapt converse or green orchards
\nwith fruit leaning<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tStood imaged in thy waves and, content, listened to thy rhapsody’s
\nlong murmur.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tVast now in a wide press and a dense hurry and mass movement of
\nthronged waters<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLoud-thundering, fast-galloping, might, speed is the stern message
\nof thy spirit,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tProud violence, stark claim and the dire cry of the heart’s hunger on
\nGod’s barriers<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSelf-hurled, and a void lust of unknown distance, and pace reckless
\nand free grandeur.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tCalm yet shall release thee; an immense peace and a large streaming
\nof white silence,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBroad plains shall be thine, greenness surround thee, and wharved
\ncities and life’s labour<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLong thou wilt befriend, human delight help with the waves’
\ncoolness, with ships’ furrows<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThrill, 
\n\t\t\t\u2014  last become, self losing, a sea-motion and joy boundless
\nand blue laughter. <\/span> <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe day ends lost in a stretch of even,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA long road trod  \u2014  and the little farther.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNow the waste-land, now the silence;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA blank dark wall, and behind it heaven.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe Dream Boat<\/a><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\nWho was it that came to me in a boat made of dream-fire,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWith his flame brow and his sun-gold body?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMelted was the silence into a sweet secret murmur,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t“Do you come now? is the heart’s fire ready?”<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nHidden in the recesses of the heart something shuddered.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIt recalled all that the life’s joy cherished,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nImaged the felicity it must leave lost for ever,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd the boat passed and the gold god vanished.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNow within the hollowness of the world’s breast inhabits  \u2014
\n<\/span> <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFor the love died and the old joy ended  \u2014
\n\t\t\t<\/span> <\/p>\n

\nVoid of a felicity that has fled, gone for ever,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd the gold god and the dream boat come not.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSoul in the Ignorance, wake from its stupor.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFlake of the world-fire, spark of Divinity,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLift up thy mind and thy heart into glory.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSun in the darkness, recover thy lustre.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOne, universal, ensphering creation,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWheeling no more with inconscient Nature,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFeel thyself God-born, know thyself deathless.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWho art thou in the heart comrade of man who sitst<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAugust, watching his works, watching his joys and griefs,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nUnmoved, careless of pain, careless of death and fate?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWitness, what hast thou seen watching this great blind world<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMoving helpless in Time, whirled on the Wheel in Space,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThat yet thou with thy vast Will biddest toil our hearts,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMystic,  \u2014  for without thee nothing can last in Time?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWe too, when from the urge ceaseless of Nature turn<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOur souls, far from the breast casting her tool, desire,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tGrow like thee. In the front Nature still drives in vain<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe blind trail of our acts, passions and thoughts and hopes;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tUnmoved, calm, we look on, careless of death and fate,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf grief careless and joy,  \u2014  signs of a surface script<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWithout value or sense, steps of an aimless world.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSomething watches behind, Spirit or Self or Soul,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tViewing Space and its toil, waiting the end of Time.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWitness, who then art thou, one with thee who am I,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNameless, watching the Wheel whirl across Time and Space?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDescent<\/a><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAll my cells thrill swept by a surge of splendour,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSoul and body stir with a mighty rapture,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLight and still more light like an ocean billows<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOver me, round me.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tRigid, stonelike, fixed like a hill or statue,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nVast my body feels and upbears the world’s weight;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDire the large descent of the Godhead enters<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLimbs that are mortal.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tVoiceless, thronged, Infinity crowds upon me;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPresses down a glory of power eternal;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMind and heart grow one with the cosmic wideness;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tStilled are earth’s murmurs.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSwiftly, swiftly crossing the golden spaces<\/span><\/p>\n

\nKnowledge leaps, a torrent of rapid lightnings;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThoughts that left the Ineffable’s flaming mansions,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBlaze in my spirit.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSlow the heart-beats’ rhythm like a giant hammer’s;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMissioned voices drive to me from God’s doorway<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWords that live not save upon Nature’s summits,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tEcstasy’s chariots.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAll the world is changed to a single oneness;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSouls undying, infinite forces, meeting,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tJoin in God-dance weaving a seamless Nature,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tRhythm of the Deathless.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMind and heart and body, one harp of being,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCry that anthem, finding the notes eternal,  \u2014 <\/span> <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLight and might and bliss and immortal wisdom<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tClasping for ever.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Lost Boat<\/a><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAt the way’s end when the shore raised up its dim line and remote
\nlights from the port glimmered,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThen a cloud darkened the sky’s brink and the wind’s scream was
\nthe shrill laugh of a loosed demon<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd the huge passion of storm leaped with its bright stabs and the
\nlong crashing of death’s thunder;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAs if haled by an unseen hand fled the boat lost on the wide
\nhomeless forlorn ocean.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIs it Chance smites? is it Fate’s irony? dead workings or blind
\npurpose of brute Nature?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOr man’s own deeds that return back on his doomed head with a
\nstark justice, a fixed vengeance?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOr a dread Will from behind Life that regards pain and salutes
\ndeath with a hard laughter?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIs it God’s might or a Force rules in this dense jungle of events,
\ndeeds and our thought’s strivings?<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tYet perhaps sank not the bright lives and their glad venturings
\nfoiled, drowned in the grey ocean,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBut with long wandering they reached an unknown shore and a
\nstrange sun and a new azure,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAmid bright splendour of beast glories and birds’ music and deep
\nhues, an enriched Nature<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd a new life that could draw near to divine meanings and touched
\nclose the concealed purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIn a chance happening, fate’s whims and the blind workings or dead
\ndrive of a brute Nature,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIn her dire Titan caprice, strength that to death drifts and to doom,
\nhidden a Will labours.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNot with one moment of sharp close or the slow fall of a dim
\ncurtain the play ceases:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tYet is there Time to be crossed, lives to be lived out, the unplayed
\nacts of the soul’s drama.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWhen the heart tires and the throb stills recalling<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThings that were once and again can be never,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWhen the bow falls and the drawn string is broken,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHands that were clasped, yet for ever are parted,<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWhen the soul passes to new births and bodies,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLands never seen and meetings with new faces,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIs the bow raised and the fall’n arrow fitted,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tActs that were vain rewedded to the Fate-curve?<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTo the lives sundered can Time bring rejoining,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLove that was slain be reborn with the body?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIn the mind null, from the heart’s chords rejected,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLost to the sense, but the spirit remembers!<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSoul’s Scene<\/a><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\nThe clouds lain on forlorn spaces of sky, weary and lolling,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWatch grey waves of a lost sea wander sad, reckless and rolling,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA bare anguish of bleak beaches made mournful with the breath of the Northwind<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd a huddle of melancholy hills in the distance.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe blank hour in some vast mood of a Soul lonely in Nature<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOn earth’s face puts a mask pregnantly carved, cut to misfeature,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd man’s heart and his stilled mind react hushed in a spiritual
\npassion<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tImitating the contours of her desolate waiting.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nImpassible she waits long for the sun’s gold and the azure,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe sea’s song with its slow happy refrain’s plashes of pleasure, 
\n\t\t\t\u2014 <\/span> <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAs man’s soul in its depths waits the outbreaking of the light and the godhead<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd the bliss that God felt when he created his image.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAscend, single and deathless:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tCare no more for the whispers and the shoutings in the darkness,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPass from the sphere of the grey and the little,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLeaving the cry and the struggle,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nInto the Silence for ever.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tVast and immobile, formless and marvellous,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHigher than Heaven, wider than the universe,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIn a pure glory of being,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn a bright stillness of self-seeing,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tCommuning with a boundlessness voiceless and intimate,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMake thy knowledge too high for thought, thy joy too deep for emotion;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAt rest in the unchanging Light, mute with the wordless self-vision,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSpirit, pass out of thyself; Soul, escape from the clutch of Nature.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAll thou hast seen cast from thee, O Witness.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTurn to the Alone and the Absolute, turn to the Eternal:<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBe only eternity, peace and silence,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tO world-transcending nameless Oneness,<\/span><\/p>\n

Live self-found in his endless completeness,<\/p>\n

\nDrowned in his joy and his sweetness,<\/p>\n

Thy heart close to the heart of the Godhead for ever.<\/p>\n

\nVast, God-possessing, embraced by the Wonderful,<\/p>\n

Lifted by the All-Beautiful into his infinite beauty,<\/p>\n

\nLove shall envelop thee endless and fathomless,<\/p>\n

Joy unimaginable, ecstasy illimitable,<\/p>\n

\nKnowledge omnipotent, Might omniscient,<\/p>\n

Light without darkness, Truth that is dateless.<\/p>\n

\nOne with the Transcendent, calm, universal,<\/p>\n

Single and free, yet innumerably living,<\/p>\n

Act in the world with thy being beyond it.<\/p>\n

\nThe Tiger and the Deer<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

Brilliant, crouching, slouching, what crept through the green heart
\nof the forest,<\/p>\n

Gleaming eyes and mighty chest and soft soundless paws of
\ngrandeur and murder?<\/p>\n

The wind slipped through the leaves as if afraid lest its voice and the
\nnoise of its steps perturb the pitiless Splendour,<\/p>\n

Hardly daring to breathe. But the great beast crouched and crept,
\nand crept and crouched a last time, noiseless, fatal,<\/p>\n

Till suddenly death leaped on the beautiful wild deer as it drank <\/p>\n

\nUnsuspecting at the great pool in the forest’s coolness and shadow,<\/p>\n

And it fell and, torn, died remembering its mate left sole in the deep
\nwoodland,  \u2014 <\/p>\n

Destroyed, the mild harmless beauty by the strong cruel beauty in
\nNature.<\/p>\n

But a day may yet come when the tiger crouches and leaps no more
\nin the dangerous heart of the forest,<\/p>\n

As the mammoth shakes no more the plains of Asia;<\/p>\n

\nStill then shall the beautiful wild deer drink from the coolness of great pools in the leaves’ shadow.<\/p>\n

\nThe mighty perish in their might;<\/p>\n

The slain survive the slayer.<\/p>\n
