\nO pall of black Night<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tO pall of black Night painted with still gold stars,<\/p>\n

\nHang now thy folds, close, clinging against earth’s bars,<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tO dim Night!<\/p>\n

\nThen Slumber shall come swinging the unseen<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tGates, and to lands guarded by a screen<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOf strange light<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSet out, my soul charioted on a swift dream<\/p>\n

\nFrom earth escape slipping into the unknown gleam,<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe Ray white.<\/p>\n

\nTo the hill-tops of silence<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTo the hill-tops of silence from over the infinite sea,<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tGolden he came,<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tArmed with the flame,<\/p>\n

\nLooked on the world that his greatness and passion must free.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOh, but fair was her face<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n

\nOh, but fair was her face as she lolled in her green-tinted robe,<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tEmerald trees,<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSapphire seas,<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSun-ring and moon-ring that glittered and hung in each lobe.<\/p>\n

\nIn the ending of time<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIn the ending of time, in the sinking of space<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWhat shall survive?<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHearts once alive,<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBeauty and charm of a face?<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNay, these shall be safe in the breast of the One,<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMan deified,<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWorld-spirits wide,  \u2014 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNothing ends, all but began.<\/p>\n

\nAn epiphany of faces,<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLong curled fires,<\/p>\n

\nThe illumined and tremendous<\/p>\n

\nA God-pageant of the aeons<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tVast, deep-hued,<\/p>\n

\nAnd the thunder of its paeans<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWide-winged, nude,<\/p>\n

\nIn their harmony stupendous<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSmote earth’s ear.<\/p>\n

\nImmortal, whence has come thy swift delight,<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThy grasp.<\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nAll things in vain thy hands seize;<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tEarth’s music fails, the notes cease<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOr rasp.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAloud thou callst to blind Fate,<\/p>\n

\n“Remove the bar, the gold gate<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tUnhasp.”<\/p>\n

\nBut never hast thou the goal yet of thy race<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNeared, nor thrilled with the ineffable Face,<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe clasp.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tVast-winged the wind ran<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\nVast-winged the wind ran, violent, black-cowled the waves<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tO’er-topped with fierce green eyes the deck,<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHuge heads upraised.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDeath-hunted, wound-weary, groaned like a whipped beast
\nthe ship,<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tShrank, cowered, sobbed, each blow like Fate’s<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDespairing felt.<\/p>\n

\nPassion swift and implacable<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tArose and, storm-footed,<\/p>\n

\nIn the dim heart of him<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tRan insatiate, conquering,<\/p>\n

\nWorlds devouring and hearts of men,<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThen perished, broken by<\/p>\n

\nThe irresistible<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOccult masters of destiny,<\/p>\n

\nThey who sit in the Secrecy<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd watch unmoved ever<\/p>\n

\nUnto the end of all.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOutspread a Wave burst<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n

\nOutspread a Wave burst, a Force leaped from the unseen,<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tVague, wide, some veiled Maker, masked Lighter of the Fire:<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWith dire blows the Smith of the World<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tForged strength from hearts of the weak;<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tEarth’s hate the edge of the axe,<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSmitten by the gods,<\/p>\n

\nHewn, felled, the Form crashed that touched heaven and its stars.<\/p>\n

\nOn the grey street<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOn the grey street and the lagging winding waters<\/p>\n

\nOne sees far off stealing away to meet the rich drooping purple of the sky<\/p>\n

\nA stillness falls,  \u2014  a supernatural silence<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLies on the lap of Nature.<\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nThe street man’s life, and the waters earth’s sky-dowry,<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd this rich span’s unreal splendour, symbol hue, sign to sight
\nof the Unseen;<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMan’s life lies mute, the waters run to the splendour;<\/p>\n

\nThe Unseen is this mighty Silence.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tCry of the ocean’s surges<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\nCry of the ocean’s surges, the long hexameter rolling<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tCovers my spirit as tides roll over rapturous shores.<\/p>\n

\nFoam on its tops the pentameter curls to its cadenced closing,<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTwo high waves, then a hush swoons on the ear in its fall.<\/p>\n
