\n\t\t\tWho will come with me? Who will climb with me?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWade through the brook and tramp through the

\nIn the strength of a man, in the beauty of woman,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIn the laugh of a boy, in the blush of a girl;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe hand that sent Jupiter spinning through heaven,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSpends all its cunning to fashion a curl.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThese are His works and His veils and His shadows;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBut where is He then? by what name is He known?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIs He Brahma or Vishnu? a man or a woman?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBodied or bodiless? twin or alone?<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\nWe have love for a boy who is dark and resplendent,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA woman is lord of us, naked and fierce.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWe have seen Him a-muse on the snow of the mountains,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWe have watched Him at work in the heart of the
\n\t\t\tspheres.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\nWe will tell the whole world of His ways and His cunning:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHe has rapture of torture and passion and pain;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe delights in our sorrow and drives us to weeping,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThen lures with His joy and His beauty again.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\nAll music is only the sound of His laughter,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAll beauty the smile of His passionate bliss;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOur lives are His heart-beats, our rapture the bridal<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOf Radha and Krishna, our love is their kiss.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\nHe is strength that is loud in the blare of the trumpets,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd He rides in the car and He strikes in the
\n\t\t\tspears;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe slays without stint and is full of compassion;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHe wars for the world and its ultimate years.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn the sweep of the worlds, in the surge of the ages,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIneffable, mighty, majestic and pure,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBeyond the last pinnacle seized by the thinker<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHe is throned in His seats that for ever endure.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Master of man and his infinite Lover,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHe is close to our hearts, had we vision to see;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWe are blind with our pride and the pomp of our passions,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWe are bound in our thoughts where we hold
\n\t\t\tourselves free.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIt is He in the sun who is ageless and deathless,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd into the midnight His shadow is thrown;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhen darkness was blind and engulfed within darkness,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHe was seated within it immense and alone.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBut this at least can never be,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tO thou mortal ecstasy,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThat one should live, even in pain,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMy soul arose at dawn and, listening, heard<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOne voice abroad, a solitary bird,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA song not master of its note, a cry<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThat persevered into eternity.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMy soul leaned out into the dawn to hear<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIn the world’s solitude its winged compeer<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd, hearkening what the Angel had to say,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSaw lustre in midnight and a secret day<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWas opened to it. It beheld the stars<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBorn from a thought and knew how being prepares.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThen I remembered how I woke from sleep<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd made the skies, built earth, formed Ocean
\n\t\t\tdeep.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA Vision of Science<\/a><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tI dreamed that in myself the world I saw,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWherein three Angels strove for mastery. Law<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWas one, clear vision and denial cold,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nYet in her limits strong, presumptuous, bold;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe second with enthusiasm bright,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFlame in her heart but round her brows the night,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFaded as this advanced. She could not bear<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThat searching gaze, nor the strong chilling air<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThese thoughts created, nourishing our parts<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf mind, but petrifying human hearts.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tScience was one, the other gave her name,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nReligion. But a third behind them came,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tVeiled, vague, remote, and had as yet no right<\/span><\/p>\n

\nUpon the world, but lived in her own light.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWide were the victories of the Angel proud<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWho conquered now and in her praise were loud<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe nations. Few even yet to the other clove, 
\n\t\t\t\u2014
\n\t\t\t<\/span> <\/p>\n

\nAnd some were souls of night and some were souls of love.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBut this was confident and throned. Her heralds
\n\t\t\tranged<\/span><\/p>\n

\nClaiming that night was dead and all things changed;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFor all things opened, all seemed clear, seemed
\n\t\t\tbright  \u2014
\n\t\t\t<\/span> <\/p>\n

\nSave the vast ranges that they left in night.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHowever, the light they shed upon the earth<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWas great indeed, a firm and mighty birth.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA century’s progress lived before my eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDelivered from amazement and surprise,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMan’s spirit measuring his worlds around<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe laws of sight divined and laws of sound.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLight was not hidden from her searching gaze,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNor matter could deny its myriad maze<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTo the cold enquiry; for the far came near,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe small loomed large, the intricate grew clear.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMeasuring and probing the strong Angel strode,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDissolving and combining, till she trod<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFirmly among the stars, could weigh their forms,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tForetold the earthquakes, analysed the storms.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDoubt seemed to end and wonder’s reign was closed.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe stony pages of the earth disclosed<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTheir unremembered secrets. Horses of steam<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWere bitted and the lightnings made a team<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo draw our chariots. Heaven was scaled at last<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd the loud seas subdued. Distance resigned<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIts strong obstructions to the mastering mind.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSo moved that spirit trampling; then it laid<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIts hand at last upon itself, how this was made<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWondering, and sought to class and sought to
\n\t\t\ttrace<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMind by its forms, the wearer by the dress.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThen the other arose and met that spirit robust,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWho laboured; she now grew a shade who must<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFade wholly away, yet to her fellow cried,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n"I pass, for thou hast laboured well and wide.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThou thinkest term and end for thee are not;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut though thy pride is great, thou hast forgot<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe Sphinx that waits for man beside the way.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAll questions thou mayst answer, but one day<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHer question shall await thee. That reply,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAs all we must; for they who cannot, die.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tShe slays them and their mangled bodies lie<\/span><\/p>\n

\nUpon the highways of eternity.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTherefore, if thou wouldst live, know first this
\n\t\t\tthing,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWho thou art in this dungeon labouring."<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd Science confidently, "Nothing am I but earth,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTissue and nerve and from the seed a birth,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA mould, a plasm, a gas, a little that is much.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn these grey cells that quiver to each touch<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe secret lies of man; they are the thing called
\n\t\t\tI.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMatter insists and matter makes reply.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tShakespeare was this; this force in Jesus yearned<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd conquered by the cross; this only learned<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe secret of the suns that blaze afar;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThis was Napoleon’s giant mind of war."<\/span><\/p>\n

\nI heard and marvelled in myself to see<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe infinite deny infinity.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nYet the weird paradox seemed justified;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tEven mysticism shrank out-mystified.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut the third Angel came and touched my eyes;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tI saw the mornings of the future rise,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nI heard the voices of an age unborn<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThat comes behind us and our pallid morn,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd from the heart of an approaching light<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOne said to man, "Know thyself infinite,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWho shalt do mightier miracles than these,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tInfinite, moving mid infinities."<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThen from our hills the ancient answer pealed,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t"For Thou, O Splendour, art myself concealed,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd the grey cell contains me not, the star<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tI outmeasure and am older than the elements are.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhether on earth or far beyond the sun,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tI, stumbling, clouded, am the Eternal One."<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOr, had I sought thee for thy virtuous youth<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThy monstrous billows raise, abysmal cracks<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOne pale boat flutters over them, hardly seen.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCall me, "Why dost thou linger on the shore<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWatching my tops visit their foam-washed skies?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThis trivial boat<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDares my vast battering billows and can float.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAre there not many thousands left behind?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFor man’s wide soul,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWho set eternal godhead for its goal.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTherefore He arrayed<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDanger and difficulty like seas and made<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tPain and defeat,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd put His giant snares around our feet.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe cloud He informs<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWith thunder and assails us with His storms,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThat man may grow<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tKing over pain and victor of o’erthrow<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMatching his great<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tUnconquerable soul with adverse Fate.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTake me, be<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMy way to climb the heavens, thou rude great sea.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tI will seize thy mane,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tO lion, I will tame thee and disdain;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd the swift eve all sweet things bears away,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAll sweet things and all bitter, rose and weed.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor others’ bliss who lives, he lives indeed.<\/span><\/p>\n
