\n\t\t\tPururavus from Titan conflict ceased<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTurned worldwards, through illimitable space<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHad travelled like a star ‘twixt earth and heaven<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSlowly and brightly. Late our mortal air<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHe breathed; for downward now the hooves divine<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTrampling out fire with sound before them went,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd the great earth rushed up towards him, green.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWith the first line of dawn he touched the peaks,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNor paused upon those savage heights, but reached<\/span><\/p>\n

\nInferior summits subject to the rain,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd rested. Looking northwards thence he saw<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe giant snows upclimbing to the sky,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd felt the mighty silence. In his ear<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe noise of a retreating battle was,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWide crash of wheels and hard impetuous blare<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf trumpets and the sullen march of hosts.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTherefore with joy he drank into his soul<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe virgin silence inaccessible<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOf mountains and divined his mother’s breasts.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut as he listened to the hush, a thought<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tCame to him from the spring and he turned round<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd gazed into the quiet maiden East,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWatching that birth of day, as if a line<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf some great poem out of dimness grew,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSlowly unfolding into perfect speech.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe grey lucidity and pearliness<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBloomed more and more, and over earth chaste
\n\t\t\tagain<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe freshness of the primal dawn returned,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLife coming with a virginal sharp strength,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRenewed as from the streams of Paradise.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNearer it drew now to him and he saw<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOut of the widening glory move a face<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe golden virgin, Usha, mother of life,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tYet virgin. In a silence sweet she came,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nUnveiled, soft-smiling, like a bride, rose-cheeked,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHer bosom full of flowers, the morning wind<\/span><\/p>\n

\nStirring her hair and all about her gold.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNor sole she came. Behind her faces laughed<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDelicious, girls of heaven whose beauties ease<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe labour of the battle-weary Gods;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThey in the golden dawn of things sprang gold,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFrom youth of the immortal Ocean born,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThey youthful and immortal, and the waves<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWere in their feet and in their voices fresh<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAs foam, and Ocean in their souls was love.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLaughing they ran among the clouds, their hair<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd raiment all a tempest in the breeze.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe sky grew glorious with them and their feet<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA restless loveliness and glad eyes full<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOf morning and divine faces bent back<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSo danced they numberless as dew-drops gleam,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRumbha, Nelabha, Shela, Nolinie,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLolita, Lavonya and Til\u00f4ttama,  \u2014 <\/span> <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMany delightful names; among them she.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd seeing her Pururavus the king<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tShuddered as of felicity afraid,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd all the wide heart of Pururavus<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMoved like the sea  \u2014  when with a
\n\t\t\tcoming wind<\/span><\/p>\n

\nGreat Ocean lifts in far expectancy<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWaiting to feel the shock, so was he moved<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBy expectation of her face. For this<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWas secret in its own divinity<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLike a high sun of splendour, or half seen<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAll troubled with her hair. Yet Paradise<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBreathed from her limbs and tresses wonderful,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWith odours and with dreams. Then for a space<\/span><\/p>\n

\nVoiceless the great king stood and, troubled, watched<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWho art thou graspest me with hands of fire,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMaking my soul all colour? Surely I thought<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe hills would move and the eternal stars<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDeviate from their rounds immutable,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNever Pururavus; yet lo! I fall.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMy soul whirls alien and I hear amazed<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe galloping of uncontrollable steeds.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMen said of me: The King Pururavus<\/span><\/p>\n

\nGrows more than man; he lifts to azure heaven<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIn vast equality his spirit sublime.’<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhy sink I now towards attractive earth?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd thou, who art thou, mystery! golden wonder!<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMoving enchantress! Wast thou not a part<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOf soft auspicious evenings I have loved?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHave I not seen thy beauty on the clouds?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIn moonlight and in starlight and in fire?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSome flower whose brightness was a trouble? a face<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWhose memory like a picture lived with me?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA thought I had, but lost? O was thy voice<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA vernal repetition in some grove,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTelling of lilies clustered o’er with bees<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd quiet waters open to the moon?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSurely in some past life I loved thy name,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd syllable by syllable now strive<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIts sweetness to recall. It seems the grace<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOf visible things, of hushed and lonely snows<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd burning great inexorable noons,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd towns and valleys and the mountain winds.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAll beauty of earthliness is in thee, all<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLuxurious experience of the soul.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nO comest thou because I left thy charm<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAiming at purity, O comest thou,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAs when a man to the grey face of dawn<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAwaking from an unremembered dream,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tRepines at life awhile and buffets back<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe wave of old familiar thoughts, and hating<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHis usual happiness and usual cares<\/span><\/p>\n

\nStrives to recall a dream’s felicity;  \u2014 <\/span> <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLong strives in vain and rolls his painful
\n\t\t\tthought<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThrough many alien ways, when sudden comes<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA flash, another, and the vision burns<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLike lightning in the brain, so leaped that name<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tInto the musing of the troubled king.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nJoyous he cried aloud and lashed his steeds:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThey, rearing, leaped from Himalaya high<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd trampled with their hooves the southern wind.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBut now a cry broke from the lovely crowd<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf fear and tremulous astonishment;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd they huddled together like doves dismayed<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWho see the inevitable talons near<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd rush of cruel wings. ‘Twas not from him,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor him they saw not yet, but from the north<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA fear was on them, and Pururavus<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHeard a low roar as of a distant cloud.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHe turned half-wrathful. In the far northwest<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHeaven stood thick, concentrated in gloom,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDarkness in darkness hidden; for the cloud<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRose firmament on sullen firmament,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAs if all brightness to entomb. Across<\/span><\/p>\n

\nGreat thundrous whispers rolled, and lightning quivered<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFrom edge to edge, a savage pallor. Down<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe south wind dropped appalled. Then for a while<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tStood pregnant with the thunderbolt and wearing<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRain like a colour, the monumental cloud<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSublime and voiceless. Long the heart was stilled<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd the ear waited listening. Suddenly<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFrom motionless battalions as outride<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA speed disperse of horsemen, from that mass<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOf livid menace went a frail light cloud<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRushing through heaven, and behind it streamed<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe downpour all in wet and greenish lines.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSwift rushed the splendid anarchy admired,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd reached, and broke, and with a roar of rain<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd tumult on the wings of wind and clasp<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOf the o’erwhelmed horizons and with bursts<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf thunder breaking all the body with sound<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd lightning ‘twixt the eyes intolerable,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLike heaven’s vast eagle all that blackness swept<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDown over the inferior snowless heights<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd swallowed up the dawn. Pururavus,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLost in the streaming tumult, stood amazed:<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut as he watched, he was aware of locks<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFlying and a wild face and terrible<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd fierce familiar eyes. Again he looked<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd knew him in a hundred battles crossed,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe giant Cayshie. It seemed but yesterday<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThat over the waves of fight their angry eyes<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHad met. He in the dim disguise of rain,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAll swift with storm, came passionate and huge,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFilling the regions with himself. Immense<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHe stooped upon the brides of heaven. They<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLike flowers in a gust scattered and blown<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFled every way; but he upon that beauty<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMagical sprang and seized and lifted up,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAs the storm lifts a lily, and arrow-like<\/span><\/p>\n

\nUp towards the snow-bound heights in rising cloud<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRushed with the goddess to the trembling East.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBut with more formidable speed and fast<\/span><\/p>\n

\nStorming through heaven King Pururavus<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHurled after him. The giant turned and knew<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe sound of those victorious wheels and light<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIn a man’s face more dangerous to evil<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThan all the shining Gods. He stood, he raised<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOne dreadful arm that stretched across the
\n\t\t\theavens,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd shook his baffling lance on high. But vast,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBut magnified by speed came threatening on<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWith echoing hooves and battle in its wheels<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe chariot of the King Pururavus<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBearing a formidable charioteer,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tPururavus. The fiend paused, he rolled his eyes<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFull of defiance, passion and despair<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tUpon the swooning goddess in his arms<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd that avenger. Violence and fear<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tPoised him a moment on a wave of fate<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThis way to death cadent, that way to shame.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThen groaning in his great tumultuous breast<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe dropped upon the snow heaven’s ravished flower<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd fled, a blackness in the East. New sky<\/span><\/p>\n

\nReplenished from the sullen cloud dawned out;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe great pure azure rose in sunlight wide.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNor King Pururavus pursued but checked<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHis rushing chariot on the quiet snow<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd sprang towards her and knelt down and trembled.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tPerfect she lay amid her tresses wide,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLike a mishandled lily luminous,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAs she had fallen. From the lucid robe<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOne shoulder gleamed and golden breast left bare,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDivinely lifting, one gold arm was flung,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA warm rich splendour exquisitely outlined<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAgainst the dazzling whiteness, and her face<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWas as a fallen moon among the snows.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd King Pururavus, beholding, glowed<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThrough all his limbs and maddened with a love<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe feared and cherished. Overawed and hushed,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHardly even breathing, long he knelt, a greatness<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMade stone with sudden dread and passion. Love<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWith fiery attempt plucked him all down to her,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut fear forbade his lips the perfect curls.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAt length he raised her still unkissed and laid<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn his bright chariot, next himself ascended<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd resting on one arm with fearful joy<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHer drooping head, with the other ruled the car;  \u2014
\n<\/span> <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWith one arm ruled, but his eyes were for her<\/span><\/p>\n

\nStudying her fallen lids and to heart-beats<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tGuessing the sweetness of the soul concealed.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd soon she moved. Those wonderful wide orbs<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDawned into his, quietly, as if in muse.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA lovely slow surprise crept into them<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAfterwards; last, something far lovelier,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhich was herself, and was delight, and love.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAs when a child falls asleep unawares<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAt a closed window on a stormy day,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLooking into the weary rain, and long<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSleeps, and wakes quietly into a life<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOf ancient moonlight, first the thoughtfulness<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf that felicitous world to which the soul<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIs visitor in sleep, keeps her sublime<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDiscurtained eyes; human dismay comes next,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSlowly; last, sudden, they brighten and grow wide<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWith recognition of an altered world,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDelighted: so woke Urvasie to love.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nBut, hardly now that luminous inner dawn<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBridged joy between their eyes, laughter broke in<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd the returning world; for M\u00e9naca,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nStanding a lily in the snows, laughed back<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThose irresistible wheels and spoke like song; 
\n\t\t\t\u2014 <\/span> <\/p>\n

\nShe tremulous and glad from bygone fear;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBut all those flowerlike came, increasing light,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTheir bosoms quick and panting, bright, like waves<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd before all M\u00e9naca tremulously<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSmiling: "Whither, O King Pururavus,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBear’st thou thy victory? Wilt thou set her<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA golden triumph in thy halls? But she<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIs other than thy marble caryatids<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd austere doors, purity colourless.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRead not too much thy glory in her eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWill not that hueless inner stream yet serve<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhere thou wast wont to know thy perfect deeds?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBut give her back, give us our sister back,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd in return take all thyself with thee."<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSo with flushed cheeks and smiling M\u00e9naca.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd great Pururavus set down the nymph<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn her bright sister’s arms and stood awhile<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tStormily calm in vast incertitude,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tQuivering. Then divine Til\u00f4ttama:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n"O King, O mortal mightier than the Gods!<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFor Gods change not their strength, but are of
\n\t\t\told<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd as of old, and man, though less than these,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMay yet proceed to greater, self-evolved.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMan, by experience of passion purged,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHis myriad faculty perfecting, widens<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis nature as it rises till it grows<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWith God conterminous. For one who tames<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis hot tremulousness of soul unblest<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBut ere he plunged into the human vales<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd kindlier grandeurs, King Pururavus<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLooked back upon a gust of his great heart,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd saw her. On a separate peak, divine,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIn blowing raiment and a glory of hair<\/span><\/p>\n
