\nThe R\u00e1kshasas<\/a><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t(The
\n\t\t\tR\u00e1kshasa, the violent kinetic Ego, establishes his claim
\nto mastery of the world replacing the animal Soul,  \u2014  to be followed by controlled and intellectualised but unregenerated
\nEgo, the Asura. Each such type and level of consciousness sees the Divine in its own image and its level in Nature is sustained
\nby a differing form of the World-Mother.)<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t“Glory and greatness and the joy of life,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nStrength, pride, victorious force, whatever man<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDesires, whatever the wild beast enjoys,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBodies of women and the lives of men,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tI claim to be my kingdom. I have force<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMy title to substantiate, and I seek<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNo crown unearned, no lordship undeserved.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAsk what austerity Thou wilt, Maker of man,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tExpense of blood or labour or long years<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSpent in tremendous meditations, lives<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tUpon Thy altar spent of brutes or men,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOr if with gold Thy favour purchasable<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tI may command, rich offerings to glut<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThy temples and Thy priests. I have a heart,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA hand for any mighty sacrifice,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA fiery patience in my vehement mood;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tI will submit. But ask not this of me,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMeek silence and a pale imprisoned soul<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMade colourless of its humanity;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAsk not the heart that quakes, the hand that spares.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWhat strength can give, not weakness, that demand.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tO Rudra, O eternal Mah\u00e1dev,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThou too art fierce and mighty, wrathful, bold,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSnuffing Thy winds for blood of sacrifice,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd angrily Thou rul’st a prostrate world.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nO R\u00e1kshasa Almighty, look on me,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nR\u00e1van, the lord of all Thy R\u00e1kshasas,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tGive me Thy high command to smite Thy foes;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut most I would afflict, chase and destroy<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThy devotees who traduce Thee, making Thee<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA God of love, a God too sweet to rule.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tI have the knowledge; what Thou art, I know,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd know myself, for Thou and I are one.”<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSo prayed the Lord of Lunca, and in Heaven<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSri Krishna smiled, the Friend of all mankind,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA smile of sweetness and divine delight,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd asked, “O Masters of the knowledge, Seers<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWho help me by your thoughts to help mankind,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHearken what
\n\t\t\tR\u00e1van cries against the stars,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDemanding earth for heritage. Advise,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tShall he then have it?” And a cry arose,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n“He would root out the Brahmin from the earth,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tImpose his dreadful Yoga on mankind,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd make the violent heart, the iron hand<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSovereign of all.” Sri Krishna made reply,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n“From out Myself he went to do My will.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHe has not lied, he has the knowledge. He<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd I are one. How then shall I refuse?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDoes it not say, the Veda that you know,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhen one knows That, then whatso he desires,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIt shall be his’?” And Atri sage replied,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n“Let him then rule a season and be slain.”<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd He who reigns, “Something you know, O Seers,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNot all My purpose. It is long decreed,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe R\u00e1kshasa shall rule the peopled earth.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHe takes the brute into himself for man,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nYielding it offerings, while with grandiose thoughts<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd violent aspirations he controls;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe purifies the demon in the race,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSlaying in wrath, not cruelty. Awhile<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHe puts the
\n\t\t\tV\u00e1nara out of the world,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAccustoming to grandeur all mankind;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Ifrit1<\/font><\/sup> he rejects. Were he denied<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHis period, man could not progress. But since<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe sees himself as Me, not Me in him,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd takes the life and body for the whole,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe cannot last. Therefore is Atri’s word<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAccepted.” And before the R\u00e1kshasa,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOut of the terror of the sacrifice,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNaked and dark, with a blood-dripping sword<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd dreadful eyes that seemed to burn the world,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nKal\u00ed  the R\u00e1kshas in flames arose.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n“Demand a boon!” she cried, and all the gods<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTrembled. “Give me the earth for my delight,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHer gods to be my slaves,” the Giant cried,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t“Of strength and passion let me have my fill,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf violence and pride.” “So let it be,”<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tShe answered. “Shall it be eternal then?”<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tR\u00e1van demanded and she thundered, “No!<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor neither thou nor I are best nor last.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe
\n\t\t\tAsur\u00ed  shall rise to fill my place,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe Asura thy children shall dethrone.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAn aeon thou hast taken to evolve,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAn aeon thou shalt rule. But since thy wish<\/span><\/p>\n

\nI have denied, ask yet another boon.”<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t“Let this be mine, that when at last I sink,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNor brute nor demon, man nor Titan’s hand,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNor any lesser creature shall o’erthrow,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut only God Himself compel my fall.”<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd
\n\t\t\tKal\u00ed  answered, smiling terribly,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t“It is decreed,” and laughing loud she passed.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThen
\n\t\t\tR\u00e1van from his sacrifice arose.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t(According to one idea Desire is the creator and sustainer of
\nthings,  \u2014  Desire and Ignorance. By losing desire one passes beyond the Ignorance, as by passing beyond Ignorance one
\nloses desire; then the created world is surpassed and the soul enters into the Divine Reality. Kama here speaks as Desire
\nthe Creator, an outgoing power from the Bliss of the Divine Reality to which, abandoning desire, one returns, <\/i>
\n\t\t\tā<\/i><\/font>nandam brahman<\/i><\/i><\/font>o vidv<\/i>ā<\/i><\/font>n<\/i>, possessing the bliss of the Brahman.)<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tO desolations vast, O seas of space<\/span><\/p>\n

\nUnpeopled, realms of an unfertile light,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tGrow multitudinous with living forms,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEnamoured of desire! I send My breath<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tInto the heart of being, and the storm<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf sweet attraction shall break up its calm<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWith quivering passionate intensity<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd silence change to a melodious cry,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd all the world be rose. Out of My heart<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSuns shall flame up into the listless void,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd the stars wheel in magic dances round<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWeaving the web of mortal life. For I<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAm love, am passion; I create the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nI am the only Brahma. My desire<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTakes many forms; I change and wheel and race,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd with Me runs creation. I preserve,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFor I am Love. I weary of Myself,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd the world circles back into the Vast.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDelight and laughter walking hand in hand<\/span><\/p>\n

\nGo with Me, and I play with grief and pain.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tI am the dance of Krishna, I the dance<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf Kal\u00ed . Might and majesty are Mine,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd yet I make the heart a child at play,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe soul of things a woman full of bliss.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHunger and Thirst, arise and make the world!<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDelight, go down and give it strength to live!<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tO Ether, change! O Breath of things, grow full<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf the perpetual whirl! Break out, O Fire,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIn seas of magic colour, infinite waves<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf rainbow light! Thou, liquid element,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBe sap, be taste in all created things<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo please the senses. Thou, O solid earth,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tEnter into all life, support the worlds.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nI send forth Joy to lure the hearts of men,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tI send forth Law to harmonise and rule.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd when these things are done, when men have learned<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMy beauty, My desirability, My bliss,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nI will conceal Myself from their desire<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd make this rule of the eternal chase,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n“They who abandon Me, shall to all time<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tClasp and possess; they who pursue, shall lose.”<\/span><\/p>\n

\n(This poem is purely a play of the imagination, a poetic reconstruction of the central idea only of Mahatmahood.)

\n <\/p>\n

\nThe seven mountains and the seven seas<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSurround me. Over me the eightfold sun<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBlazing with various colours  \u2014  green and blue,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tScarlet and rose, violet and gold and white,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd the dark disk that rides in the mortal cave  \u2014
\n<\/span> <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLooks down on me in flame. Below spread wide<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe worlds of the immortals, tier on tier,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLike a great mountain climbing to the skies,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd on their summit Shiva dwells. Of old<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMy goings were familiar with the earth,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe mortals over whom I hold control<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWere then my fellows. But I followed not<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe usual path, the common thoughts of men.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA thirst of knowledge and a sense of power,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA passion of divine beneficence<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPursued me through a hundred lives. I rose<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFrom birth to birth, until I reached the peak<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf human knowledge. Then in Bharat born<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tI, Kuthumi, the Kshatriya, the adept,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe mighty Yogin of Dwaipayan’s school,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo Vy\u00e1sa came, the great original sage.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHe looked upon me with the eye that sees<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd smiled, august and awful. “Kuthumi,”<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHe cried, “now gather back what thou hast learned<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn many lives, remember all thy past,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tCease from thy round of human births, resume<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe eightfold power that makes a man as God,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThen come again and learn thy grandiose work,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor thou art of the souls to death denied.”<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tI went into the mountains by the sea<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThat thunders pitilessly from night to morn,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd sung to by that rude relentless sound,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAmid the cries of beasts, the howl of winds,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSurrounded by the gnashing demon hordes,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nI did the Hathayoga in three days,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWhich men with anguish through ten lives effect,  \u2014
\n\t\t\t<\/span> <\/p>\n

\nNot that now practised by earth’s feebler race,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut that which R\u00e1van knew in Lunca, Dhruv<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFulfilled, Hiranyakashipu performed,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Yoga of the old Lemurian Kings.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tI felt the strength of Titans in my veins,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe joy of gods, the pride of Siddhas. Tall<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd mighty like a striding God I came<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTo
\n\t\t\tVy\u00e1sa; but he shook his dense piled locks,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDenying me. “Thou art not pure,” he cried.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tI went in anger to
\n\t\t\tHim\u00e2loy ‘s peaks,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd on the highest in the breathless snows<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSat dumb for many years. Then knowledge came<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\nStreaming upon me and the hills around<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tShook with the feet of the descending power.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tI did the R\u00e1jayoga in three days,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhich men with care and accuracy minute<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tCeaselessly follow for an age in vain  \u2014
\n\t\t\t<\/span> <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNot Kali’s R\u00e1jayoga, but the means<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf perfect knowledge, purity and force<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBali the Titan learned and gave to men,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Yoga of the old Atlantic Kings.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nI came to Vy\u00e1sa, shining like a sun.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHe smiled and said, “Now seek the world’s great Lord,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSri Krishna, where he lives on earth concealed;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tGive up to him all that thou knowst and art.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor thou art he, elect from mortal men<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTo guard the Knowledge, 
\n\t\t\t\u2014  yet an easy task<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhile the third Age preserves man’s godlike force,  \u2014
\n<\/span> <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBut when thou seest the iron Kali come,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd he from Dwarca leaves the earth, know then<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe time of trial, help endangered Man,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPreserve the knowledge that preserves the world,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tUntil Sri Krishna utterly returns.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThen art thou from thy mighty work released<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tInto the worlds of bliss for endless years<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo rest, until another aeon comes,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWhen of the seven Rishis thou art one.”<\/span><\/p>\n

\nI sent my knowledge forth across the land;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIt found him not in Bharat’s princely halls,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn quiet asrams, nor in temples pure,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNor where the wealthy traffickers resort;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBrahmin nor Kshatriya body housed the Lord,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tVaishya nor Sudra nor outcaste. At length<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo a bare hut on a wild mountain’s verge<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLed by the star I came. A hermit mad<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf the wild Abhirs, who sat dumb or laughed,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd ran and leaped and danced upon the hills,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut told the reason of his joy to none,  \u2014 <\/span> <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIn him I saw the Lord, behind that mask<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\nPerceived the Spirit that contains the worlds.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tI fell before him, but he leaped and ran<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd smote me with his foot, and out of me<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAll knowledge, all desire, all strength was gone<\/span><\/p>\n

\nInto its Source. I sat, an infant child.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHe laughed aloud and said, “Take back thy gifts,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nO beggar!” and went leaping down the slope.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThen full of light and strength and bliss I soared<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBeyond the spheres, above the mighty gods,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd left my human body on the snows;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd others gathered to me, more or less<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIn puissance, to assist, but mine the charge<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBy Vishnu given. I gather knowledge here,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThen to my human frame awhile descend<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd walk mid men, choosing my instruments,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTesting, rejecting and confirming souls,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nVessels of the Spirit; for the golden age<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIn Kali comes, the iron lined with gold.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Yoga shall be given back to men,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe sects shall cease, the grim debates die out,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd Atheism perish from the earth<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBlasted with knowledge, love and brotherhood<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd wisdom repossess Sri Krishna’s world.<\/span><\/p>\n
