\n\t\t\tA trifling unit in a boundless plan<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAmidst the enormous insignificance<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOf the unpeopled cosmos’ fire-whirl dance,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEarth, as by accident, engendered man,<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA creature of his own grey ignorance,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA mind half shadow and half gleam, a breath<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThat wrestles, captive in a world of death,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo live some lame brief years. Yet his advance,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAttempt of a divinity within,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA consciousness in the inconscient Night,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTo realise its own supernal Light,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nConfronts the ruthless forces of the Unseen.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhat opposites are here! A trivial life<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIn its struggle of weakness towards omnipotence,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA thinking mind starts from the unthinking strife<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nIn the order of the electric elements.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tImmortal life breathed in that monstrous death,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA mystery of Knowledge wore as sheath<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMatter’s mute nescience. Its enveloped sense<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nOr dumb somnambulist will obscurely reigns<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDriving the atoms in their cosmic course<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWhose huge unhearing movement serves perforce<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Silver Call<\/a><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThere is a godhead of unrealised things<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTo which Time’s splendid gains are hoarded dross;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA cry seems near, a rustle of silver wings<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tCalling to heavenly joy by earthly loss.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAll eye has seen and all the ear has heard<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIs a pale illusion by some greater voice<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd mightier vision; no sweet sound or word,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNo passion of hues that make the heart rejoice<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tCan equal those diviner ecstasies.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA Mind beyond our mind has sole the ken<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOf those yet unimagined harmonies,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe fate and privilege of unborn men.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAs rain-thrashed mire the marvel of the rose,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEarth waits that distant marvel to disclose.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nI passed into a lucent still abode<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd saw as in a mirror crystalline<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAn ancient Force ascending serpentine<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe unhasting spirals of the aeonic road.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEarth was a cradle for the arriving god<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd man but a half-dark half-luminous sign<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOf the transition of the veiled Divine<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFrom Matter’s sleep and the tormented load<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf ignorant life and death to the Spirit’s light.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMind liberated swam Light’s ocean vast,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd life escaped from its grey tortured line;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tI saw Matter illumining its parent Night.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Call of the Impossible<\/a><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA godhead moves us to unrealised things.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAsleep in the wide folds of destiny,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA world guarded by Silence’ rustling wings<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tShelters their fine impossibility:<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBut parting quiver the caerulean gates;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tStrange splendours look into our dreaming eyes;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWe bear proud deities and magnificent fates;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFaces and hands come near from Paradise.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWhat shines above, waits darkling here in us:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBliss unattained our future’s birthright is,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBeauty of our dim souls grows amorous,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWe are the heirs of infinite widenesses.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA life of unimagined harmony<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAwaits, concealed, the grasp of unborn men.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe crude beginnings of the lifeless earth,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe mindless stirrings of the plant and tree<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPrepared our thought; thought for a godlike birth<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBroadens the mould of our mortality.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA might no human will nor force can gain,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA knowledge seated in eternity,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA bliss beyond our struggle and our pain<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAre the high pinnacles of our destiny.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nO Thou who climb’dst to mind from the dull stone,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMan the Mediator<\/a><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA dumb Inconscient drew life’s stumbling maze,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA night of all things, packed and infinite:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIt made our consciousness a torch that plays<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBetween the Abyss and a supernal Light.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOur mind was framed a lens of segment sight<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tPiecing out inch by inch the world’s huge mass,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd reason a small hard theodolite<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMeasuring unreally the measureless ways.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tYet is the dark Inconscient whence came all<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe self-same Power that shines on high unwon:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOur Night shall be a sky purpureal,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOur torch transmute to a vast godhead’s sun.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis soul the dim bud of God’s flaming rose.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nI saw the electric stream on which is run<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe world turned motes and spark-whirls of a Light,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA Fire of which the nebula and sun<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAre glints and flame-drops, scattered, eremite;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nAnd veiled by viewless Light worked other Powers,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAn Air of movement endless, unbegun,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nExpanding and contracting in Time’s hours<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd the intangible ether of the One.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nThe surface finds, the screen-phenomenon,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAre Nature’s offered ransom, while behind<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHer occult mysteries lie safe, unknown,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFrom the crude handling of the empiric Mind.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nOur truths discovered are but dust and trace<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOf the eternal Energy in her race.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFor Matter is its seeming or its form,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA finite motion of Infinity<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBuilt up by energy’s electric storm,<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA flux of solid instability<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWhirled into shape by a tremendous Force<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThat labours out the world’s fabric endlessly,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tCreates and then destroys without remorse<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTitan and worm, the dew-drop and the sea,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOur fragile bodies like the aeoned star,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBut through it all remains immortally<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe secret spirit we for ever are.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMatter is Spirit’s semblance glamorous<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSelf-woven for its own field and robe and house.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe Ways of the Spirit [1]<\/a><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\nWhat points ascending Nature to her goal?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t‘Tis not man’s lame transcribing intellect<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWith its carved figures rigid and erect<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBut the far subtle vision of his soul.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nHis instruments have served his weakness well<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBut they must change to tread the paths of Fire<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThat lead through his calm self immeasurable<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTo the last rapture’s incandescent spire.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe spirit keeps for him its ample ways,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA sense that takes the world into our being,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA close illumined touch and intimate seeing,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWide Thought that is a god’s ensphering gaze,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA tranquil heart in sympathy with all,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA will wide-winging, armed, imperial.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Ways of the Spirit [2]<\/a><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAroused from Matter’s sleep when Nature strove<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tInto the half lights of the embodied mind<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tShe left not all imprisonment behind<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut trailed an ever lengthening chain, and the love<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOf shadows and half lustres went with her.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIn timid mood were shaped our instruments;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHorizon and surface barriered thought and sense,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nForbidden to look too high, too deep to peer.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAn algebra of signs, a scheme of sense,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA symbol language without depth or wings,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA power to handle deftly outward things<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAre our scant earnings of intelligence.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tYet towards a greater Nature paths she keeps<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThreading the grandeur of her climbing steeps.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t
\n\t\t\tScience and the Unknowable<\/a><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\nIn occult depths grow Nature’s roots unshown;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tEach visible hides its base in the unseen,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tEven the invisible guards what it can mean<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIn a yet deeper invisible, unknown.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nMan’s science builds abstractions cold and bare<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd carves to formulas the living whole;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIt is a brain and hand without a soul,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA piercing eye behind our outward stare.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nThe objects that we see are not their form,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA mass of forces is the apparent shape;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tPursued and seized, their inner lines escape<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIn a vast consciousness beyond our norm.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nFollow and you shall meet abysses still,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tInfinite, wayless, mute, unknowable.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Yogi on the Whirlpool<\/a><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOn a dire whirlpool in the hurrying river,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA life-stilled statue naked, bronze, severe,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHe kept the posture of a deathless seer<\/span><\/p>\n

\nUnshaken by the mad water’s leap and shiver.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThought could not think in him, flesh could not quiver;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe feet of Time could not adventure here;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOnly some unknown Power nude and austere,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOnly a Silence mighty to deliver.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHis spirit world-wide and companionless,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSeated above the torrent of the days<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOn the deep eddy that our being forms,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSilent sustained the huge creation’s stress,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tUnchanged supporting Nature’s rounds and norms,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tImmobile background of the cosmic race.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t
\n\t\t\tThe Kingdom Within<\/a><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\nThere is a kingdom of the spirit’s ease.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIt is not in this helpless swirl of thought,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFoam from the world-sea or spray whispers caught,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWith which we build mind’s shifting symmetries,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNor in life’s stuff of passionate unease,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNor the heart’s unsure emotions frailly wrought<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNor trivial clipped sense-joys soon brought to nought,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNor in this body’s solid transiences.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nWider behind than the vast universe<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOur spirit scans the drama and the stir,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA peace, a light, an ecstasy, a power<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWaiting at the end of blindness and the curse<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThat veils it from its ignorant minister<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe grandeur of its free eternal hour.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMy heart a deep Atlantic of delight.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tCarrying Thy vision’s sacred oriflamme<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMy mind is made a voiceless breadth of Thee,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA lyre of muteness and a luminous sea;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe electron on which forms and worlds are built,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA spark from the eternal Energy spilt,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIt is the Infinite’s blind minute abode.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nIn that small flaming chariot Shiva rides.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe One devised innumerably to be;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis oneness in invisible forms he hides,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTime’s tiny temples to eternity.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nAtom and molecule in their unseen plan<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tButtress an edifice of strange onenesses,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCrystal and plant, insect and beast and man,  \u2014 <\/span> <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMan on whom the World-Unity shall seize,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWidening his soul-spark to an epiphany<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOf the timeless vastness of Infinity.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Indwelling Universal<\/a><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIn me Arcturus and Belphegor burn.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTo whatsoever living form I turn<\/span><\/p>\n

\nI see my own body with another face.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAll eyes that look on me are my sole eyes;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe one heart that beats within all breasts is mine.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe world’s happiness flows through me like wine,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIts million sorrows are my agonies.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThou art my soul great, luminous and white<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIts mighty wings that through infinity move<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd the Time-gallopings of the deathless Horse.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThis mute stupendous Energy that whirls<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe stars and nebulae in its long train,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLike a huge Serpent through my being curls<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWith its diamond hood of joy and fangs of pain.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIt rises from the dim inconscient deep<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tUpcoiling through the minds and hearts of men,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThen touches on some height of luminous sleep<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe bliss and splendour of the eternal plane.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAre all that God reveals in our life-scheme,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe last result of Nature’s cosmic task.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA greater Presence in her bosom works;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLong it prepares its far epiphany:<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEven in the stone and beast the godhead lurks,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA bright Persona of eternity.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIt shall burst out from the limit traced by Mind<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tI left the glory of the illumined Mind<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd the calm rapture of the divinised soul<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd travelled through a vastness dim and blind<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTo the grey shore where her ignorant waters roll.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tI walk by the chill wave through the dull slime<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd still that weary journeying knows no end;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLost is the lustrous godhead beyond Time,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThere comes no voice of the celestial Friend.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDeveloped consciousness, assumed a soul?<\/span><\/p>\n
