\nHear me, thou strong and resistless Poseidon, lord of the waters.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDancing thy waves in their revel Titanic, tossing my vessel<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOne to another, laugh from their raucous throats of derision,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDropping it deep in their troughs till it buries its prow in the welter.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nComrades dear as the drops of my heart have been left when it rises,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLeft in thy salt and lonely seas, and the scream of the tempest<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSole in the meadows of Thebes Teiresias sat by the Dirce,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBlind Teiresias lonely and old. The song of the river<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMoaned in his ears and the scent of the flowers afflicted his spirit<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWandering naked and chill in the winds of the world and its greyness.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSilent awhile, then he smote on the ground with the stay of his blindness,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCalling “O murmuring waters of Dirce, loved by my childhood,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWaters of murmuring Dirce, flowers that were dear to the lover,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThen was your perfume a sweetness, then were your voices a carol;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNow you are dark to me, scents that hurt; you are dirges, O waters.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDeath we have taken in horror, the anguish of others afflicts us<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd with the pangs of an alien heart we are shaken and troubled.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLo, I am torn by a woman’s sobs that come up in the midnight.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPerennial which the senses round him build;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut ere I rise, ere I become the vast<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd luminous Infinite and from the past<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd future utterly released forget<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNala, Nishadha’s king, paced by a stream<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhich ran, escaping from the solitudes<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTo flow through gardens in a pleasant land.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMurmuring it came of the green souls of hills<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd of the towns and hamlets it had seen,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe brown-limbed peasants toiling in the sun,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd the tired bullocks in the thirsty fields.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn its bright talk and laughter it recalled<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe moonlight and the lapping dangerous tongues,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe sunlight and the skimming wings of birds,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd gurgling jars, and bright bathed limbs of girls<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAt morning, and its noons and lonely eves.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThis memory to the jasmine trees it sang<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhich dropped their slow white petalled kisses down<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tUpon its haste of curling waves. Far off<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA mountain rose, alone and purple vague,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWide-watching from its large stone-lidded eye<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe drowsy noontide earth; vastly outspread<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLike Vindhya changed, against the height of heaven<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIt stood and on the deep-blue nearness leaned<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIts shoulder in a mighty indolence.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nReclined for giant rest the Titan paused.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe birds were voiceless on the unruffled boughs;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe spotted lizard in a dull unease<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBasked on his sentinel stone, a single kite<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCircled above; white-headed over rust<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOf brown and gold he stained the purple noon.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSolitary in the spaces of his mind<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAmong these sights and sounds King Nala paced<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOblivious of the joy of outward things.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tShrill and dissatisfied the wanderer’s cry<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCame to his ear; he saw with absent eyes<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe rapid waters in their ripple run<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNor marked the ruddy sprouting of the leaves,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNor heard the dove’s rare cooing in the trees.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis thoughts were with a face his dreams had seen<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDiviner than the jasmine’s moon-flaked glow;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe listened to a name his dreams had learned<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSweeter than passion of the crooning bird.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIts delicate syllables yearning through his mind<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tRepeated longingly the soft-wreathed call,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAs if some far-off bright forgotten queen<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFrom whom his heart had wandered through the world,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWere summoning back to her her truant thrall,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLuring him with the music of her name.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut soon some look on him he seemed to feel.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe summit self-uplifted to the sky<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMounting the air in act to climb and join<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHeaven’s sapphire longing with earth’s green unease<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDrew his far gaze, which conned as for a thought<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe undecipherable charactery<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf rocks and mingled woods; but all was lost<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIn too much light. Dull glared the giant stones;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe woods, fallen sleepy on their mountain couch,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHad nestled in their coverlet of haze.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLike dim-seen shapes of virgins stoled in blue<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIn huddled grace sleeping close-limbed they lay.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThen from some covert bosom’s shrouded riches<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA revelation came; for like a gleam<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf beauty from a purple-guarded breast<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOne lovely glint of passionate whiteness broke.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFluttering awhile towards him soon it fled<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSeeking his vision; and its glowing race<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSplintered the sapphire with its silvery hue,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd now a flame-bright flock of swans was seen<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFlying like one and breasting with its shock<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOf faery speed the vastness of the noon.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNot only with an argent flashing ran<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe brilliant cohort on its skiey path,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut shaking from wild wings a hail of gold.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHeaven’s lustrous tunic of transparent air<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRegretted the bright ornament as they passed.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThey flew not like the snowy cranes, like wreaths<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOf flowers driven in the rain-wind’s breath,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhen thunder calls them northward, but came fast<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tRanked in magnificent and lovely lines,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCleaving the air with splendour, while the pride<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd rushing glory of their bosoms and wings<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAssailed his eyes with silver and with flame.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOver the Nishadhan gardens flying round<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThey came down whirring softly, then filled awhile<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWith gentle clamour from their liquid throats<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe region, and disturbed with dipping plumes<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe turquoise slumber of the motionless lake<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLulled to unrippling rest by windless noon.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA hundred wonderful shapes in mystic crowd<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCovered the water like a living robe.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNext on the stream they spread their glorious breasts.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEach close-ranked by her sweet companion’s side,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFloating they came and preened above the flood<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTheir long and stately necks like curving flowers.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe water petted with enamoured waves<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTheir bosoms and the slow air swooned along<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTheir wings; their motion set a wordless chant<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo flow against the chidings of the stream.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd hard to speak their beauty, what silver mass<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOn mass, what flakes and peacock-eyes of gold,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWhat passion of crimson flecked each pure white breast.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIt seemed to his charmed sense that in this form<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe loveliness of a diviner world<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHad come to him winged. Their beauty to tender greed<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMoved him of all that living silver and gold.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n“For now thy heaven-born pride must learn to range<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMy gardens of the earth and haunt my streams,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd to my call consent. If thou resist<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tI will imprison thee in a golden cage<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd bind thy beauty with a silver chain.”<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA laughter beautiful arose from her,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSweet, satisfied because he praised her grace.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd with mysterious mild deep-glowing eyes<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIn long and softly-wreathing syllables<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe wonder spoke. “Release me, for no birds<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAre we, O mortal, but the moon-bosomed nymphs<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWho to the trance-heard music of the gods<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSway in the mystic dances of the sky,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nApsaras, daughters of the tumbling seas.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tShaped by thy fancy is my white-winged form.”<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut Nala to his bright prisoner swan replied:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t“And more thou doomst thyself by all thy words,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBird of desire or goddess luminous-limbed,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTo satisfy my pride and my delight,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMy divine captive and white-bosomed slave<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWho stoopst to me from unattainable heavens.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThou shalt possess my streams, O white-winged swan,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd dance, O Apsara, singing in my halls.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBetween the illumined pillars thou shalt glide<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWhen flute and breathing lyre and timbrel call,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAdorning with thy golden rhythmic limbs<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe crystalline mosaic of my floors.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhat I have seized by force, by force I keep.”<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHer eyes now smiled on him; submissively<\/span><\/p>\n

\nShe laid in all its tender curving grace<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe long white wonder of her neck upraised<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn suppliant wreaths against his bosom and pressed<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFlatteringly her silver head upon his cheek<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd with her soft alluring voice replied:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t“Because thou art bright and beautiful and bold<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSo have I come to thee and thou hast seized<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWhom if thou hadst set free, thy joy were lost.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSo to thy mind from some celestial space<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA name and face have come, yet are on earth,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhich if thou hadst not held with yearning’s stays,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThy mortal life would have been given in vain.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFlying like one and breasting with its shock<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSo rapidly the wonder travelled, soon<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHe saw distinct the feathers proud and fine<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNot only with a splendour argentine,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBut shaken from the wings was shed a hail<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf gold that left the sunbeam’s glory pale.<\/span><\/p>\n
