\n\t\t\tUnder the high and gloomy eastern hills<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe portals of Pataala are and there<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe Bhogavathie with her sinuous waves<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRises, a river alien to the sun,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd often to its strange and gleaming sands<\/span><\/p>\n

\nUloupie came, weary of those dim shades<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd great disastrous caverns neighbouring Hell,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAvid of sunlight. Through the grasses long<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tShe glided and her fierce and gorgeous hood<\/span><\/p>\n

\nGleamed with a perilous beauty and a light<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAbove the green spikes of the grass; often<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn the slow sinuous waters she was spied<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSwimming, with mystic dusky hair and cheeks<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThat had no rose,  \u2014  one shoulder’s dipping glow<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThrough water and one white breast hardly seen.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut as she swam she looked towards the west<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDreaming of daily sunlight and of flowers<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThat need soft rain and of the night with stars,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA friendly darkness and the season’s change<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn beautiful Aryavertha far away,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe country of the Gods, and yet sometimes<\/span><\/p>\n

\nVaguely expectant to the southward gazed.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThen into heaven dim-featured twilight came<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd in her city mid the eastern hills<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tChitrangada awoke and saw the dawn<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPresaged in bleakness. From Urjoona’s arms<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tUnclasping her rose-white smooth limbs, she looked<\/span><\/p>\n

\nInto the opening world; but all was grey<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd formless. Then into her mood there passed<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe spirit of the gloomy northern hills<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBurdening her breasts with terror and her heart<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWas bared to insight, and new-heard a moan<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOf waters and remembered pain. The sad<\/span><\/p>\n

Haunted her with affliction, and she found<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tPale hints of absence from the twilight drawn.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut now the hero felt his clasp a void<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd on one arm half-rising searched the grey<\/span><\/p>\n

\nUnlidded darkness for the face; then spoke<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSlowly her name, “How has the unborn day<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tCalled thee, beloved, that thou standest dumb<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn the grey light like one whose joy is far?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tCome hither.” Silently she came and knelt<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd laid her quiet cheek upon his breast.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHe felt her tears, wondering; and she replied,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n“Ah, dost thou love me and a moment brief<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOf absence troubles even in sleep thy heart<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWaking to emptiness? And yet, ah God,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHow easily that void will soon be filled!<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor thou wilt like a glorious burning move<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThrough cities and through regions like a star,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCareless in thy heroic strength o’er all<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe beautiful country Aryavertha. Women<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWill see thy face and strangely, swiftly drawn<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThy masculine attraction feel and bow<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOver thy feet. For thou wilt come to them<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA careless glory taking women’s hearts<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAs one breaks from a tree the wayside flowers,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd smile, securely kind, even as a god<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMight draw a mortal maiden to his arms<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd marry his immortal mouth to hers.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThen will thy destiny seize thee; thou wilt pass<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLike some great light in heaven, leaving behind<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA splendid memory of force and fire.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd thou wilt fill thy soul with battle, august<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMisfortunes and tremendous harms embrace,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tExperience mighty raptures and at last<\/span><\/p>\n

\nUpon some world-renowned far-rumoured field<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tEmpire for ever win or lose, nor all<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe while think once of my forgotten face.”<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tShe ceased and wept; he said, touching her hair,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n“What wast thou musing, O Chitrangada,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLonely beside the window and thine eyes<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLooked out on the half-formed aspect of things<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTwixt light and darkness? Do not so again.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor bleak and dreadful is the hour ere dawn<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd one who gazes out then from his sweet,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWarm, happy, bounded human room, is touched<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWith awful memories that he cannot grasp<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd mighty sorrows without form, the sense<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOf an original vastness desolate,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBleak labour and a sad unfinished world.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDwell not with these again, but when thou wakest<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd seest the unholy hour pallid gaze<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tInto thy room, draw closer to my bosom<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWaking with kisses and with joy surround<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThy soul until God rises with the sun.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFriendly to mortals is the living sun’s<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tGreat brilliant light; but this pale hour was made<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor slowly-dying men whose lone chilled souls<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tGrow near to that greyness and dumb mourners<\/span><\/p>\n

\nUnfriended.” But Chitrangada replied,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t“I looked into the dawn and had a dream.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThou wast gone far from me; too well I knew<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThat sound of trampling horsehooves in the north<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd victor rumours of thy chariot shook<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe hearts of distant kings. I sat alone<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAt this pale window and about me saw<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMy city and our low familiar hills.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nYet these were but as objects painted in<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tUpon the eye, and round me I beheld<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe gloomy northern mountains with their mists<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd sorrowful embracing rains and heard<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWith melancholy voices rolling down<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe waters of a dull, ill-omened stream<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSinuous and eddies alien to the sun.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThat thou wilt pass from me I know, nor would<\/span><\/p>\n

\nI stay thee, had I power: for if today<\/span><\/p>\n

\nI held thy feet, yet as the seasons passed,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe impulse of thy mighty life would come<\/span><\/p>\n

\nUpon thee like a wind and drive thee forth<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTo love and battle and disastrous deeds<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd all the giant anguish that preserves<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThis world. Thou as resistlessly wast born<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo these things as the leopard sleek to strength<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd beauty and fierceness, as resistlessly<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAs women are to love; though well they know<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tPain for the end, yet knowing still must love.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAh swiftly pass. Why shouldst thou linger here<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tVainly? How will it serve God’s purpose in thee<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo tarry soothing for such brief while longer<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMerely a woman’s heart; meanwhile perhaps<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLose some great moment of thy life which once<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNeglected never can return.” She ceased<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd strove to conquer overmastering tears.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHe was silent a little, then his eyes<\/span><\/p>\n

\nStrained towards the dim-seen fairness of her face,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSaying, “O little loving child, who once<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWast simply glad to love and feel my kiss!<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBut now thou mournest, art in one night changed.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThou wast not wont to leave my arms ere dawn<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd dream of sorrow. Rather wast thou fain<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf all my bosom and the gazing light<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHardly could force away thy obstinate clasp.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nYet now thou speakst of absence easily.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIs my love faded? Dost thou feel my arms<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLooser about thee, my beloved? Nay,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThou knowest that not less but more I love thee<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThan when to eastern Monipura far<\/span><\/p>\n

\nI came, a wandering prince companioned only<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBy courage and my sword and found thee here,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nO sweet young sovereign, ruling with pure eyes<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd little maiden hand, fragile and mild,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA strong and savage nation. At my call<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tUnquestioning thou camest, oh, meekly down<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLeaving tremendous seat and austere powers,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tContented at my feet to dwell and feel<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMy kisses on thy hair, and couldst renounce<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThy glorious girdle for my simple arms.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nO fair young soul, candid and meek and frank<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThy love was, opening to me fragrantly<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLike flowers to the sun, wide-orbed, and yielded<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThy whole self up. Yet now thou speakest sadly<\/span><\/p>\n

\nToo like a mind matured by thought and pain.”<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHe ceased, covering her bosom with his hands,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd she trembled, and broke out faltering.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t“O endlessness of moments and the long<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRain-haunted nights when thou art far! O me<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd the pale dreadful dawn when I shall wake<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn the grey hour and feel myself alone<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFor ever! Yet O my rapture and pride! O prince,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nO hero, O strong protagonist of earth!<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWorld-conqueror! and in heaven immortal lips<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBurning have kissed thy feet, but I possessed.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tGod knows that I have loved thee, not with grudging<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPiecemeal reluctant cessions of the soul<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAs ordinary women love, but greatly<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWith one glad falling at my conqueror’s feet<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAll suddenly and warmly like the Spring.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAh God, thy beauty when it dawned on me<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd I obeyed thy bright attraction! felt<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThy face like the great moon that draws the tides!<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFacing our armed senate, bow in hand<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLeaned on a pillar with a banner’s pomp<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSeeming to mingle in thy hair thou stoodst<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tExpectant, careless, and thy strong gracious face<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWas brilliant like a sudden god’s. And half<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tI rose up as one called. But even then<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThrough all the hushed assembly ran a murmur,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAn impulse and a movement and with cries<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRound thee my strong barbarian nobles pressed<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOffering fierce homage. But I sat alone,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAbandoned, with a wounded sad delight,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLoving thy glory, like a young warrior conquered<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIn battle by the hero he admires.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThou tookst me by the hand and ledst me down<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFrom the high
\n\t\t\tda\u00efs and the ancient throne:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFaltering I went with meek submissive eyes.”<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThen strong Urjoon: “Beloved, and was this not<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDearer, a woman’s bliss in her one lord<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThan ruling all those kings? Dost thou not choose<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tRather thy body by my kisses wakened<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThan those free virgin and unconscious limbs?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAh wherefore shouldst thou dream of love cut short<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd joy without its sequel? Rather think<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThat thy young passion shall to matron bloom<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLive warmly enriched and beautifully changed<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWhen thou with the hushed wonder of motherhood<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTouching thy sweet young eyes holdst up to me<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tReturning from high battle to thine arms<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA creature of our own.” And she answered<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWith a low sob, “Would God that it might be!<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut though I loved thee I have known I was<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNo real part of thy great days; only<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA bosom on which thou hast lain ere riding<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTo battle, a face which thou hast loved and passed.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHero, take up thy bow! Warrior, arise!<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tProceed with thy majestic mission. Thou<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFrom many mighty spirits wast selected<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd mayst not for a transient joy renounce<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe anguish and the crown. But I shall witness<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThy far-off pomps, not utterly alone;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAs herdsmen pausing under quiet leaves<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWatch the stupendous passage of a host,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nShrill neigh of horses, chariots swift and men<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMarching, and hear great conchshells blown, and look<\/span><\/p>\n

\nInto the burning eyes of kings. Some wave<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOf thy vast fate perhaps shall roll thee here<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEre all is over; for the long round of things<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBrings a changed soul in man to old unaltered<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPlaces, and objects cared for once; then, then<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWe touching hands in the old way, yet changed,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nShall wonder in each other’s eyes to find<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tStrange kindlings and the buried deeps of love.”<\/span><\/p>\n

\nShe ended and Urjoona for a moment<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBeheld vast Aryavertha as if mapped<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBefore him, rivers, heaven-invading hills<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd cities ancient as their skies; then turned<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd drawing to his bosom Chitrangada<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWith his calm strength surrounding her replied:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n“This may be; yet, O woman, O delight,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tRemember to rejoice! Flowers die, beloved,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo live again; therefore hold fast to love,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHold fast the blooming of thy life in love.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe soul’s majestic progress moulding doom<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIs with the frailest flower helped that blows<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn frankness. Therefore is the woman’s part<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNearest divine, who to one motion keeps<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd like the fixed immortal planets’ round<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIs constant to herself in him she loves.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNor though fate call me hence, have I in vain<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLoved thee, young virgin of the hills, and snared<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThy feet with kisses; though my soul from thee<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAdventure journeying like a star the void,  \u2014

\nAs ’tis our spirit’s fate ever to roam<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSeeking bright portions of ourself, which found<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe strong heart cherishes until his close.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tRelinquish nothing grasped; who yieldeth aught<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo fate or weakness, misses the great goal;  \u2014 <\/span> <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSo have I planted thee within my heart,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nO tender beauty, and shall not lightly lose.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThough years divide us and the slow upgrowth<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf overlaying thoughts submerge the peace,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe sweet and mutual self 
\n\t\t\t\u2014  yet the old joy<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLives like Valmekie in his mound,  \u2014  the sage,<\/span><\/p>\n

Buried, forgot, but murmuring the name.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLet us not lose then, O Chitrangada,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOne moment’s possibility of love<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWhich being squandered, we shall then regret.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFate that united once, may when she will<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDivorce, but cannot the sweet meaning spoil<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf these warm kisses.” He embraced her wholly<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tConfounding her with bliss; so for that time<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Shadow fled and joy forgot his close.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBut one pale morn Chitrangada rose wan<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd to the stable through the grey hushed place<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDescending, with her little deft hands yoked<\/span><\/p>\n

\nUrjoona’s coursers to the car,  \u2014  persuading<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThrust in their whinnying mouths the bit, fastened<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe traces, harmonised the reins, then led<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tInto the sad dim court trampling his steeds;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd with a strange deep look of love and hate<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tCaressing said, faint with her unshed tears:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n“You brought him here who now shall bear away,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tO horses yoked to fate. How often yet<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWill you deceive us shaking wide your manes<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd trampling over women’s hearts with hooves<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThunderous towards battle? Yet your breed perhaps<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tShall bring him to my wrinkled age.” And now<\/span><\/p>\n

\nUrjoona came: his mailed and resonant tread<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tRang in her very heart, his corslet blazed<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTowards the chill skies and his heroic form<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSeemed to consent with the surrounding hills.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut in the marble face and eyes august<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe light of his tremendous fate had dawned<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLike a great sunrise. Calm her shuddering body<\/span><\/p>\n
