\nDire death’s sickle mows like a harvest his hosts and his throngings.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEven if all life has failed, must it therefore be failure for ever?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAre not the ages before us still for a grander endeavour?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHave we not Beauty around in a dangerous world but enthralling,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCourage inciting our steps and Thought to infinity calling?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThat cast their fire between the spirit’s poles.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAlone like a bright star twixt earth and heaven,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHe reached the crossways of eternity.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tJourneying in dim momentous solitude<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLed by the flickering of uncertain suns,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHe essayed the fringe of Night’s tremendous home.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBefore him lay the subtle realm of light<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOur organed sense conceals, the light that gleams<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAcross the sealless musings of the seer,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA slumberless wide eye upon our scene.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut destined to earth’s darkly pregnant dream<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHe tarried not on these mysterious shores,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut still descending the divine abyss<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTo new adventure in the eternal Night<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTransgressed the wonder-line of things beyond<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAbruptly into mortal space and time.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA universe appeared of difficult birth,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe labour of eclipsed and ignorant gods,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAn immortality of chance and change.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBridging the gulf between antagonist planes<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe saw the circles of Heaven’s rash advance.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSun upon sun, God’s sentinels in the void,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLife’s radiant and immeasurable camp<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBlazed in the order of the aeonic Will.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut with the menace of the dragon depths<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe old blind vigilant Nescience stretched afar<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHungering in serpent dumb infinitude,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd her dark shade besieged the luminaries.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSilence and Death opposed the invading Fire.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd even before he broke into our pale<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThere came on him a breath from tarnished worlds.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAverse from an obscure material touch<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe images of the supernal field<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThat he had left sank from the front of thought<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd held their session in the heart’s dumb cave;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe glory and grace, the light, the sacred life<\/span><\/p>\n

\nReceded as behind a burning door:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSubliminal beneath the lid of mind<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe grandeur and the passion and the calm.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis mind became a beat of memory.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSight, hearing changed towards our diminished scale;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe little views grew great, the great grew small.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAs yet some largeness was of inmost things<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd he remembered in the formless sense<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tProud kingdoms of intense and beautiful life<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd love left free to do his absolute will<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd dreams at once commuted into power.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAffronting many starfields of our space<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd shortening ever the vast lens of Time<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe met a smaller movement of desire<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tPrisoned in the orbit of a few pale globes<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd knew in front our little solar belt<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHung casually among the giant stars.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOur earth received him mid her living forms.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHer deep inconscient motions packed and mute,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHer darknesses more wise than her small lights<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOppressed again his young divinity.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTHE<\/font> EARTH<\/font> VOICES<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tArise now, tread out the fire!<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tScatter the ashes of a God through the stars.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tForget to hope and aspire.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLet us paint our prison, let us strengthen its bars.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLo, now he is dead and the greatness that cumbered the world and Time’s ways<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHas vanished like a golden shadow thrust out from the anguish of the ages;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe glory and burden, the sunlight and the passion have left our days;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tArise, tread out the fire,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nScatter the ashes of a god through the stars!<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tForget to hope and aspire.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe is dead and his greatness that cumbered the world has vanished like a golden shadow from the ages.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe whip of glory, the splendid burden behind us are cast,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tEarth is free from fire and stress, left to the joy of her
\nsmallness, rid of his mighty spirit at last.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAll that is false and wry and little are freed to follow their
\nnature once more.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tClose time’s brilliant pages!<\/span><\/p>\n

\nGive back to man’s life the old tables, its dull ease, its bowed greyness restore.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTHE<\/font> INCONSCIENT<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

\nFlame that invadest my empire of sorrow wordless and sombre,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tArrow of azure light golden-winged, barbed with delight,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWho was it aimed thee into this crucified Soul that for ever<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tPassions and beats in the womb of a universe built for its tomb?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLo, I am Death and I live in the boundless cavern of Nature,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDeath who cannot die, Shadow of Eternity,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nVainly I burn in stars as they err through a Void without feature,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tScintillant forms of my Nought vast without life, without thought.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nO all my worlds, you who glitter and wander, God has devised you<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBurning nails in my heart, stones of my prisonhouse. God,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nArchitect tranquil relentless and mighty, built and incised you,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tClamped with you Time, his road towards Nothingness, Death’s deep
\nabode.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tI the Inconscient have passioned for life and its beat and its
\n\t\t\tglory,  \u2014 <\/span> <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLife that Death might die. O, was it life that He gave me?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tPulse of my darkness, reflex and nerve-beat! More hopeless I suffer,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tRacked by the flame an obscure will in me kindled to save me.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLife? or a sorrowful throb of my Matter teaching it anguish,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTeaching it hope and desire trod down by Time in the mire?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLife? this joy that weeps for its briefness, this foot-path for sorrow?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLife, this embrace of a death treasuring some transient breath?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBoons of a shortlived sweetness twisted and turned into torture, 
\n\t\t\t\u2014 <\/span> <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHope more blind than my Night, desire and its deadly delight,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBliss that is small on the wings of a moment, vivid and fragile,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLove grown a kinsman to hate, will made an engine of Fate.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTorn with my anguish I cried out for knowledge, light on my midnight,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLight on my symbols of dream and a power in the Light to redeem.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tYea, was it knowledge He gave me, this thought that is tangled in darkness,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIgnorance reading its own record in sense and in stone?<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIgnorance tracing its plans and its dreams on a canvas of error!<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMind this half-light in me born, like the glow of a morrowless morn?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAutographs, hieroglyphs of the reflexes life has engendered,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSpasms of matter caught into luminous figments of thought.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNay, is not God but myself, Death’s euphemism fictioned immortal,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNothing eternalised, bare, yet as if one who is None,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDeath yet for ever alive, an Inconscient troubled with seemings,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMatter tormented with life, a Void with its forces at strife?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nO by my thought to escape from myself out of thought into Nothing  \u2014
\n<\/span> <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThus I had hoped to dissolve, rapt in some tensionless Bliss,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRending the Illusion I made to be immobile and formless and timeless  \u2014
\n<\/span> <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThis dream too now I leave, long not even to cease.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nInto my numb discontent I have lapsed of a universe barren,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tGoalless, condemned to survive, a spirit of matter in pain.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNow have I known myself as this boundless finite, this darkness<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tShadowily self-lit, grown content to strive without end and in vain.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFire that travellest from immortality, spark of the Timeless,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWhy hast thou come to my night, an unbearable Idol of Light?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAh from what happier universe strayedst thou kindling my torpor?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThou, O spirit of Light, perturb not my vastness of Night.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nI walked beside the waters<\/a><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tI walked beside the waters of a world of light<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOn a gold ridge guarding two seas of high-rayed night.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOne was divinely topped with a pale bluish moon<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd swam as in a happy deep spiritual swoon<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMore conscious than earth’s waking; the other’s wide delight<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBillowed towards an ardent orb of diamond white.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBut where I stood, there joined in a bright marvellous haze<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe miracled moons with the long ridge’s golden blaze.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tI knew not if two wakings or two mighty sleeps<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMixed the great diamond fires and the pale pregnant deeps,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBut all my glad expanding soul flowed satisfied<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAround me and became the mystery of their tide.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAs one who finds his own eternal self, content,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNeeding naught else beneath the spirit’s firmament,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIt knew not Space, it heard no more Time’s running feet,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTermless, fulfilled, lost richly in itself, complete.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd so it might have lain for ever. But there came<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA dire intrusion wrapped in married cloud and flame,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAcross the blue-white moon-hush of my magic seas<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA sudden sweeping of immense peripheries<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf darkness ringing lambent lustres; shadowy-vast<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA nameless dread, a Power incalculable passed<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhose feet were death, whose wings were immortality;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIts changing mind was time, its heart eternity.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAll opposites were there, unreconciled, uneased,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tStruggling for victory, by victory unappeased.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAll things it bore, even that which brings undying peace,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBut secret, veiled, waiting for some supreme release.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nI saw the spirit of the cosmic Ignorance;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tI felt its power besiege my gloried fields of trance.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nBut now its huge Enigma had a voice, a cry<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThat echoed through my oceans of felicity.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nA Voice arose that was so sweet and terrible<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIt thrilled the heart with love and pain, as if all hell<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTuned with all heaven in one inextricable note.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBorn from abysmal depths on highest heights to float,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIt carried all sorrow that the souls of creatures share,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tYet hinted every rapture that the gods can bear.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n“O Son of God who cam’st into my blackest Night<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTo sound and know its gulfs and bring the immortal light<\/span><\/p>\n

\nInto the passion of its darkness, castst thou man’s fate<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFor thy soul’s freedom and its magic are forfeit,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRenouncing the high pain that gave thee mortal birth<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd made thy soul a seeker on the common earth?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhen first the Eternal cast Himself abroad to be<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHis own unimaginable multiplicity,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nExpressing in Time and shape what timelessly was there,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe mighty Mother stood alone in diamond air<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd took into her that Godhead streaming from above<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd worlds of her endless beauty and delight and love<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLeaped from her fathomless heart.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA strong son of lightning<\/a><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA strong son of lightning came down to the earth with fire-feet
\nof swiftness splendid;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLight was born in a womb and thunder’s force filled a
\nhuman frame.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe calm speed of heaven, the sweet greatness, pure passion,
\nwinged power had descended;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAll the gods in a mortal body dwelt, bore a single name.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nA wide wave of movement stirred all the dim globe in each glad and dreaming fold.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLife was cast into grandeur, ocean hands took the wheels of Time.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMan’s soul was again a bright charioteer of days hired by gods impetuous, bold,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHurled by One on His storm-winged ways, a shaft aimed at heights sublime.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nThe old tablets clanging fell, ancient slow Nature’s dead wall was rent asunder,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tGod renewed himself in a world of young beauty, thought and flame:<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDivine voices spoke on men’s lips, the heart woke to white dawns of gleaming wonder,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAir a robe of splendour, breath a joy, life a godlike game.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tI made danger my helper<\/a><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\nI made danger my helper and chose pain for thy black anvil my strength hammering to sheen,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd have reckoned the snare and the pit as nought for the hope of one lonely ray;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nI turned evil into good, drew out of grief force and returned love to the hate in men:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tArtist of cosmos wrapped in thy occult shadow,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThee and thy truth men searching for ever vainly,<\/span><\/p>\n

Find and are baffled.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAlways thou workst and seemst not to know thy workings,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nYet thy touch, Geometer, wide-wayed Builder,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tVastest things can shape and minutest, potent,<\/span><\/p>\n

Patient, unerring.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAll is thou or is thine but who art thou, Dreamer,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nParadox ensouling the soulless spaces,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSelf-creator weaving thy magic figures,<\/span><\/p>\n

Mechanist Mystic?<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWho thou art none knoweth, ungrasped thy nature,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEver we see thee veiled by thy titan forces,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOnly some dim greatness we feel, a mute-eyed<\/span><\/p>\n

Inscrutable Presence.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAgeless, formless, nameless and uncreated,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLost in night where never was seed of living,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAncient, mighty, lone is thy wordless spirit,<\/span><\/p>\n

Blind and immortal.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAll at first was only thy giant shadow;<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTime then was not, space was not yet imagined,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThoughtless, soundless lay the inconscient ocean<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn the voiceless hierophants of Nature with their hieratic script of colour,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOrchid, tulip and narcissus, rose and nenuphar and lotus,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSomething of eternal beauty seizes on the soul and nerves and
\nheartstrings.<\/span><\/p>\n
