\n\t\t\t <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe two pieces that follow are connected with
\n\t\t\tThe Ideal<\/i>
\nof Human Unity <\/i>and War and Self-Determination<\/i>. Appendix I is a
\n\t\t\tnote Sri Aurobindo wrote during the 1930s or 1940s with reference to
\n\t\t\ta proposed solution of international problems on the basis of
\n\t\t\tprinciples put forward in The Ideal of Human Unity<\/i>. Appendix
\n\t\t\tII consists of a fragment found in a notebook containing
\n\t\t\tmiscellaneous writings by Sri Aurobindo. It appears to be a draft
\n\t\t\tfor the opening of an essay like those included in
\nWar and<\/i>
\nSelf-Determination<\/i>. It is clear from its content that it was written not
\n\t\t\tlong after the end of World War I, perhaps in 1919.    <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWe seem at the present moment to be very far away
\n\t\t\tfrom such a rational solution1 and indeed at the opposite pole of
\n\t\t\thuman possibility; we have swung back to an extreme of international
\n\t\t\tdisorder and to an entire application of the vital and animal
\n\t\t\tprinciple of the struggle for survival, not of the humanly fittest,
\n\t\t\tbut of the strongest. <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBut the very intensity of this struggle and
\n\t\t\tdisorder may be the path Nature has chosen towards the true escape
\n\t\t\tfrom it; for it is becoming more and more evident that a long
\n\t\t\tcontinuance of the present international state of humanity will lead
\n\t\t\tnot to any survival, but to the destruction of civilisation and the
\n\t\t\trelapse of the race towards barbarism, decadence, an evolutionary
\n\t\t\tfailure. The antipathy or hostility or distrust of nations, races,
\n\t\t\tcultures, religions towards each other is due to the past habit of
\n\t\t\tegoistic self-assertion, desire for domination, for encroachment
\n\t\t\tupon the lebensraum one of another and the consequent sense of
\n\t\t\tunfriendly pressure, the fear of subjugation or domination and the
\n\t\t\toppression of the individuality of one by the other. A state of
\n\t\t\tthings must be brought about in which mutual toleration is the law,
\n\t\t\tan order in which many elements, racial, national, cultural,
\n\t\t\tspiritual can exist side by side and form a multiple unity; in such
\n\t\t\tan order all these antipathies, hostilities, distrusts would die
\n\t\t\tfrom lack of nourishment. That would be a true state of perfectly
\n\t\t\tdeveloped human civilisation, a true basis for the higher progress
\n\t\t\tof the race. In this new order India with her spiritual culture
\n\t\t\tturned towards the highest aims of humanity would find her rightful
\n\t\t\tplace and would become one of the leaders of the human evolution by
\n\t\t\tthe greatness of her ideals and the capacity of her peoples for the
\n\t\t\tspiritualisation of life. <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tproposal for solving international problems along the lines sketched
\n\t\t\tby Sri Aurobindo in chapter 18 of The Ideal of Human Unity<\/i>,
