\nPondicherry, India. Sri Aurobindo started learning Bengali, his mother ton-
\ngue, in England, as a probationer for the Indian Civil
\nService. After his return to India he began a serious study of
\nthe language with a view to acquiring proficiency in reading,
\nwriting and speaking. During his stay at Baroda he wrote
\nsome poetry in Bengali, attempting even a long poem called
\n"Usha-Haran Kabya". <\/font><\/p>\n

\nHe wrote several articles for the earlier issues of Yugantar,
\n<\/i>a Bengali revolutionary weekly started by his brother Barin
\nand others under his guidance in March 1906. But not a
\nsingle copy of this journal has so far been traced. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nThe earliest available Bengali writings of Sri Aurobindo
\nbesides "Usha-Haran Kabya" are the three letters to his wife
\nMrinalini Devi written between 1905 and 1907. These were
\nproduced as exhibits in the Alipore Conspiracy Case in 1908,
\nand having attracted public notice were reproduced in
\nvarious journals and in book-form soon afterwards. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nAter his acquittal in 1909 Sri Aurobindo started a Bengali
\nweekly called Dharma,<\/i> and wrote most of the editorial
\ncomments and leading articles for it until his withdrawal to
\nChandernagore in February 1910. Most of these leading
\narticles were published in book-form in 1920 under the title
\nDHARMA 0 JATIYATA by Prabartak Publishing House,
\nChandernagore. In the present volume these articles are
\narranged under two sections, "Dharma" and "Jatiyata"
\n(Religion and Nationalism). ; <\/font><\/p>\n

\nSome of the articles on the Gita from Dharma<\/i> wer6
\nseparately brought out in book-form in 1920 by the Prabartak Sangha under the title GITAR BHUMIKA. ;<\/font><\/p>\n

\nKARAKAHINI (Tales of Prison Life) was first serialised in; <\/font><\/p>\n

\n

\nnine parts in the Bengali monthly, Suprabhat<\/i> in 1909-1910.
\nThis series remained incomplete as Sri Aurobindo left
\nBengal in 1910. The essay, "Karagriha 0 Swadhinata"
\n(Prison and Freedom), was published in Bharati,<\/i> a Bengali
\njournal, about the same time. KARAKAHINI came out in
\nbook-form in 1920 from Chandernagore. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nIn 1918 Sri Aurobindo wrote "Jagannather Rath" (the
\nChariot of Jagannath) for Prabartak,<\/i> a journal published
\nfrom Chandernagore. The article was published in book-
\nform in 1921 along with some others under thesame title by
\nthe Prabartak Publishing House. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nHis letter to Barin, also known as "Letter from Pondicherry", written in 1920 was first published in Narayana,<\/i> a
\njournal edited by C. R. Das. It was also issued as a booklet in
\nthe same year and later along with "Letters to Mrinalini"
\nunder the title SRI AUROBINDER PATRA (Letters of Sri
\nAurobindo) by the Prabartak Publishing House. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nA number of articles on the Vedas, Upanishads and other
\nsubjects found in Sri Aurobindo’s manuscripts were first put
\ntogether in book-form in 1955 under the title VIVIDHA
\nRACHANA. In this volume they have been distributed in
\nvarious sections. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nThe letters Sri Aurobindo wrote to some women disciples
\nwho did not know English were published as PATRAWALI in
\ntwo parts, the first in 1951 and the second in 1959. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nVolume 4 in the Sri Aurobindo Birth Centenary Library
\n<\/i>contains Sri Aurobindo’s original Bengali writings. Volume
\n27 adds a few pages. In the Sri Aurobindo Mandir Annual,
\n<\/i>1967 and 1968. English translations of all the prose writings
\nappearing in volume 4, except the Editorial Comments
\n(Dharma),<\/i> were published. The same translations appear in
\nthe present volume, with the exception of the letter to Barin
\nwhich has been taken from the Archives.<\/i> April 1980. <\/font><\/p>\n

\n

\nThe Sri Aurobindo Mandir Annual<\/i> is published by the Sri
\nAurobindo Pathamandir, Calcutta. The Hymn to Durga<\/i> is
\nSri Aurobindo’s own translation. The translations of other
\nwritings were done by Nolini Kanta Gupta, Niranjan,
\nSomnath Maitra, Sanat K. Banerjee, Sisir Kumar Ghose,
\nJugal Kishore Mukherji, Arindam Basu, Prithvindra and
\nothers. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nSome further matter has appeared in the Sri Aurobindo
\nArchives and Research<\/i> journal referred to as Archives.<\/i> From
\nthis source one hymn and six pieces of poetry have been
\nincluded in this volume. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nThe original sources of all articles are indicated in the
