\n <\/p>\n

\nTitans, assembled here, the race supreme on this earthly<\/font><\/p>\n

globe! <\/font><\/p>\n

\nA city supreme bejewelled in this sea-girt isle<\/font><\/p>\n

\n On a stony crest they shall set up in their own might, <\/font><\/p>\n

\nFearless defying the King of the gods, in disregard of the<\/font><\/p>\n

world.<\/font><\/p>\n

\n But listen! What is this rumour <\/font><\/p>\n

\nAll along the walls surrounding the city of Lanka, <\/font><\/p>\n

\nWhat is this tumult unprecedented in this land ?<\/font><\/p>\n

\n Is this the roar of a puny army in laughter and jeer, <\/font><\/p>\n

\nDancing over the head of the Mother of Rakshasas, revelling<\/font><\/p>\n

in pride and victory ?<\/font><\/p>\n

\n But whom do I fear? Why am I confined, a prisoner in my<\/font><\/p>\n

own city ? <\/font><\/p>\n

\nMute I look at their mad dance, hear their loud boast?<\/font><\/p>\n

\n Protected by Varuna in this sea one can never cross, <\/font><\/p>\n

\nWe warriors enjoyed the wide universe. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nA little island has proudly trampled over the whole mankind, <\/font><\/p>\n

\nAnd is the master of it, possessed as its own <\/font><\/p>\n

\nThe wide earth with her million habitants,<\/font><\/p>\n

\nThe haughty King of the gods, who names himself <\/font><\/p>\n

\nThe imperial majesty of the triple worlds,<\/font><\/p>\n

\n Is himself imprisoned and works as a slave here today in our<\/font><\/p>\n

Lanka\u2014<\/font><\/p>\n

\n It is through the might of your arms.<\/font><\/p>\n

\n Here are we the same Titans. Here is our city, Lanka.<\/font><\/p>\n

\n Is that might of the arms turned limp ?<\/font><\/p>\n

\n Say, Titans, has that pride lost its brilliance?<\/font><\/p>\n

\n Has that power evaporated unnoticed<\/font><\/p>\n

\nAs we lay courting sleep at night without care ?<\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nWho has stolen your blazing might ?<\/font><\/p>\n

\nIs it Krishna or Mahadeva or any other bold enough<\/font><\/p>\n

\nIn the still night trembling to enter Lanka while she lay<\/font><\/p>\n

asleep ?<\/font><\/p>\n

\n Oh! the irony of Fate! the unconquerable race<\/font><\/p>\n

\n Is conquered at last in a petty skirmish!<\/font><\/p>\n

\n Petty man is victorious in Titan’s land!
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nI could understand if Rudra with his trident rushed in,
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nHis cosmic might teeming with demigods and demons
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nAnd for days and nights and centuries battled and battered<\/font><\/p>\n

and broke through
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nAnd at last. Providence aiding, ravaged and destroyed the<\/font><\/p>\n

city of Lanka.<\/font><\/p>\n

\n I could also understand if the great Vishnu spread<\/font><\/p>\n

\n His net of duplicity, cast his spell of darkness<\/font><\/p>\n

\n Upon the intelligence of the Rakshasas and stole away<\/font><\/p>\n

\n The Fair Royal Deity of Lanka.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nBut we are conquered by the arms of Rama,<\/font><\/p>\n

\n Men have trampled upon the city of Ravana!
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nSmile happily, O vanquished gods now in heaven, <\/font><\/p>\n

\nThere is no fear of punishment for you any more.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nSmile, O Indra, in happiness, the lord of the gods is now free<\/font><\/p>\n

from slavery.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nI do not blame you if you take pride in this victory
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nThat should be a shame for you.<\/font><\/p>\n

\n Luminous is the city of Heaven, eternal Spring is there,<\/font><\/p>\n

\n Enjoy the garden of Paradise there through the mortal’s<\/font><\/p>\n

grace.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nRavana, enemy of the gods, is vanquished at the hands of a<\/font><\/p>\n

human being.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nVanquished! Listen! 0 listen! on the mighty rock afar,<\/font><\/p>\n

\nThe fierce echo hears and laughs at the word:<\/font><\/p>\n

\nIt is the daughter of the Mountain in this Isle of Lanka and<\/font><\/p>\n

her thundering voice.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nVanquished! It rends the mind and heart to utter the word.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nA Titan’s tongue cannot speak it out.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nA proud Rakshasa clad in iron-strength, with iron weapons,<\/font><\/p>\n

\n Not content with earthly victories I roamed in all the three<\/font><\/p>\n

heavens,
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nNot content, I assailed the very crest of the triple world.<\/font><\/p>\n

\n You say that race is vanquished! A mirage is this truth,
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nFalse is this history.<\/font><\/p>\n

\n Brothers, friends and sons are killed; in my vast be jewelled<\/font><\/p>\n

halls,<\/font><\/p>\n

\n Crowded with slaves and servants I wander all alone
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nIn search of friendly faces but in vain.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nThe women’s quarters are crowded too; there with a dry and<\/font><\/p>\n

desert heart
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nI look upon mothers who have lost their sons.<\/font><\/p>\n

\n In the Assembly Hall, in the battlefield,
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nIn the joyless taverns, in the insipid playfield<\/font><\/p>\n

\n My eyes in vain look for the glories of Lanka.<\/font><\/p>\n

\n Silent is the lion roar. Into these ears used to be poured
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nA torrent of delight, the trumpet call of victory,<\/font><\/p>\n

\nThe wild war-cry, the leonine yell of my brother<\/font><\/p>\n

Kumbhakarna<\/font><\/p>\n

\nBut O Aksha, O Indrajit, why are you silent at this hour of<\/font><\/p>\n

peril!
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nWhy does not your ever victorious voice delight our ears any<\/font><\/p>\n

more!<\/font><\/p>\n

\n O my children, is the embrace of Death so fast, so sweet!<\/font><\/p>\n

\n Pardon me. Titans, for the first time today the earth<\/font><\/p>\n

\n Under Ravana’s power is wet with Ravana’s tears.<\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nBut nay, let them be slain, I am yet there.<\/font><\/p>\n

\n

\nShall history write in its pages in iron letters as truth
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nThat the world-conquerors at last were conquered by Rama,<\/font><\/p>\n

the little feeble man!
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nThis dark infamy shall never be written down in the history<\/font><\/p>\n

of the Rakshasas.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nLet the world hear of the past history and wonder
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nAnd declare that the son of Dasharath enjoyed a momentary<\/font><\/p>\n

victory<\/font><\/p>\n

\n Because of the negligence of the Rakshasas.<\/font><\/p>\n

\n Now, the wonderful news will spread, unique on earth,<\/font><\/p>\n

\n A thing to madden a hero’s heart, that sons killed,<\/font><\/p>\n

\n Friends killed, killed all the great heroes,
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nYet Ravana, the Rakshasa, rises again with a roar,<\/font><\/p>\n

\n Leaps mad into battle, and a few of Lanka’s men
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nKill countless enemies in a few days,
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nWith little effort enthrall again the whole rebel world.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nArise once more, wipe away the memory of grief,
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nWipe off from your heart all shadow of sorrows,
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nKindle fire of wrath in your blinded eyes.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nForget pity, forget weariness, 0 heaven-conquering race.<\/font><\/p>\n

\n In an iron body, an iron mind and heart befits the race of<\/font><\/p>\n

Rakshasas.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nOnce more we shall slaughter all and each.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nWe shall cross the seas and depopulate
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nThe land of birth of the son of Wind-god.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nWith myriads of prisoners, slaves unnumbered<\/font><\/p>\n

\nWe shall repopulate to overflowing the isle of Lanka,<\/font><\/p>\n

\n Beget in the wombs of the enemy womanhood a new race of<\/font><\/p>\n

children.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nBut what has gone, let it go\u2014<\/font><\/p>\n

\n We shall build again, <\/font><\/p>\n

\nwe shall destroy again.
\nWe are not puny human hearts,
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nHavana’s thirst is not quenched with scanty blood!
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nThe flaming grief dies not in this vast heart<\/font><\/p>\n

\n

\nSatisfied with a feeble revenge.<\/font><\/p>\n

\n A little enjoyment does not enfeeble the ardour of these<\/font><\/p>\n

senses.<\/font><\/p>\n

\n I am a Rakshasa, once more I shall conquer<\/font><\/p>\n

\n All the world and enjoy the Infinite itself.<\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nOtherwise rest content, O jackals of Shiva’s consort,<\/font><\/p>\n

\nRest content, O you host of vultures\u2014<\/font><\/p>\n

\nA deathbed for me shall J build up like a hill<\/font><\/p>\n

\nWith thousands and thousands of human and ape heads.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nOr I shall throw into devouring fire, like faggots,<\/font><\/p>\n

\nAll the rich treasures, things of beauty and art of ancient<\/font><\/p>\n

Lanka\u2014
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nI shall throw down all this peerless grandeur:<\/font><\/p>\n

\nThis entire great city I shall light up into a titanic funeral<\/font><\/p>\n

pyre.<\/font><\/p>\n

\n The three heavens with Earth I have won in battle,<\/font><\/p>\n

\nI imprisoned all the gods, I enjoyed fame incomparable;<\/font><\/p>\n

\nI am as though the all-enveloping world-eye of the Sun,<\/font><\/p>\n

\n I burn at noon of mid-summer; afflicted by its heat
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nThe world adores the scorching Fire.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nI shine over the universe, displaying my effulgence.<\/font><\/p>\n

\n (As the sun reddens the blue of the firmament with its own
\nI blood<\/font><\/p>\n

\nAnd goes down at setting in all its glory,
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nSo shall I sink into the sea of Death.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nI was at dawn, during my sway, head uplifted,<\/font><\/p>\n

\n Fierce and radiant.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nAnd at the setting I will be there still,<\/font><\/p>\n

\n In death and destruction unconquerable, a fierce lustre and a
\nmighty blaze;<\/font><\/p>\n
