\nOur Hope <\/font><\/b><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nWe have no material strength, armaments, education,
\nnational government. Then where is our hope grounded,
\nwhere is the strength, depending on which we are attempting
\nto achieve a result impossible for the powerful and educated
\nnations of Europe ? The learned and the wise declare this to
\nbe the wild dream of youth, an idle dream of indiscriminate
\nmen drunk with high idealism. War, they think, is the only
\nway to gain independence, and we are unable to fight.
\nGranted that we are unable to wage war, nor do we advise
\narmed conflict. But is it true that physical force is the only
\nsupport of strength, or does strength emanate from some
\ndeeper, profounder source? Every one is bound to admit
\nthat it is impossible to achieve any great undertaking only
\nthrough physical prowess. Where two opposed but equally
\nstrong powers meet in conflict, the one with the greater
\nethical and mental strength,\u2014one with superior unity,
\ncourage, enthusiasm, determination, self-sacrifice, the one
\nwho has knowledge, intelligence, cleverness, keen observation, a better developed ability to evolve new means is sure
\nto win. In fact, one who is comparatively poor, in physical
\nnumber and equipment, can, because of ethical and intellectual superiority, beat down a powerful adversary. One could,
\nhowever, say that though the ethical and intellectual have
\ngreater value than physical power, without the latter who
\nwill protect the ethical and intellectual powers? This is
\nindeed true. But it has also been found that in a conflict of
\nrival ideologies, groups, cults, and cultures the side with
\nample physical strength, governmental backing, equipments
\nof war, etc., may have lost, while the side that did not have <\/font><\/p>\n

\nthese advantages at all has won. How does this happen? Jato<\/i> 
\ndharmastato jay ah,<\/i> the righteous side wins, but dharma<\/i> must
\nbe supported by force, otherwise the rise of wickedness and
\nthe degeneration of righteousness is likely to persist. Nothing
\nhappens without a reason. The reason for victory is force. By
\nwhat force does the weaker side win and the mightier side
\nlose or is destroyed? By examining historical examples we
\nshall see that this strange thing or miracle has happened
\nbecause of spiritual power, it is spiritual power, which,
\nwithout caring for physical force, tells mankind that this
\nworld is God’s kingdom, and not the playground of a blind
\nmechanical nature. The pure spirit is the source of true
\nstrength, and the original Puissance, adyaprakrti,<\/i> which
\nmoves a billion suns in the sky, and by a mere turning of its
\nfinger shaking the earth destroys all traces of the earlier
\nsplendours created by human effort, that original Puissance
\nis controlled by the pure spirit. That Puisssance can make the
\nimpossible possible, give voice to the dumb, provide the
\nlame with the power to cross mountains. The whole world is
\na creation of that power, sakti.<\/i> One whose spiritual powers
\nare developed, his instruments of victory are forged of
\nthemselves, the difficulties get removed and favourable
\nconditions are created, the ability to work grows of itself,
\nbecomes quick and energetic. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nEurope is now discovering this soul-force, though it does
\nnot believe in it wholly and has not the inclination to rely and
\nact on that faith. But at the root of India’s education,
\nculture, glory, strength is this soul-force. Every time people
\nthought the end of the Indian people was imminent, from its
\nhidden source the soul-force has flooded and revitalised the
\ndying race, created adequate and ancillary strength. That
\nsource has not dried yet, that marvellous, deathless power is still at play.
\nBut the manifestation of all the powers of the physical <\/font><\/p>\n

\n

\nuniverse depends on time; acccording to the rhythm of
\nappropriate conditions, like the ebb and tide of the sea, they
\nbecome effective in the end. With us too it is that which is
\nhappening. Now it is a complete ebb, we are waiting for the
\ntide to turn. The austerity of the great-souled, the willing
\nacceptance of suffering by the self-sacrificing, the infusion of
\nknowledge by the wise, the purity of the saint, these are the
\nfountain-head of spiritual energy. Once in the past these
\ndiverse pieties and good deeds has swept India along its
\ninvigorating ambrosial stream and transformed a dead race
\ninto something living, strong and vigorous. Once again, that
\nenergy of austerity, tapobal,<\/i> so long confined within itself, is
\nabout to be released, unbeatable, indomitable. Thanks to
\nthe oppression, the weakness and defeat of a few years, the
\nIndians have learned to seek the source of strength within
\nthemselves. Not the excitement of oration, not the mieccha,
\n<\/i>occidental learning, the emotion-arousing power of meetings
\nand societies, the fragile inspiration of newspapers, rather it
\nwill be that energy, deep, steady, unerring, pure, beyond-
\njoy-and-sorrow, beyond-good-and-evil which is born within
\nthe self when in the soul’s immense silence God and the
\nhuman person come together, that greatly-creative, greatly-
\ndestructive, greatly-conserving, knowledge-giving Mahasaraswati, wealth-bestowing Mahalakshmi, strength-giving
\nMahakali, in that combination of a thousand puissances
\nChandi will manifest herself to work for India’s and the world’s welfare. The
\nindependence of India is only a secondary aim, the main object is to reveal the power of Indian
\nculture, its spread and victory throughout the world. Had we
\nsucceeded in gaining independence or autonomy through
\nthe use of western civilised techniques, through meetings and
\norgaisations, lectures and the use of physical force, that main
\nobject would not have been fulfilled. We have to achieve
\nindependence through the inherent strength of our own <\/font><\/p>\n

\nculture, through the strength of the’ spirit and the use of
\nsubtle as well as material means that the soul-force can
\ncreate. That is why, by destroying our western-oriented
\nmovement. God has turned the outward energy inward. That
\nwhich Brahmabandhab Upadhyaya had seen in his divine
\nvision, and because of which he would repeatedly exhort
\n"Turn the energy inward"; but since the time was then not
\nripe no one could do that, he himself could not do that, but
\ntoday God has brought that about. The energy, sakti,<\/i> of
\nIndia has turned within. When once again it turns outward,
\nthat current will never cease flowing, and no one stop it.
\nRedeemer of the three worlds, that holy Ganges will flood
\nIndia and by its immortal touch it will usher in an era of new
\nyouth to the world. <\/font><\/p>\n
