\nDhritarashtra said, <\/font><\/p>\n

\nO Sanjaya, gathered together for war on the holy field of
\nKurukshetra, what did my partisans and those of the
\nPandavas do? <\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\ndrstva tu pāndavānīkam vyūdhām duryodhanastadā<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n

\nThereupon, King Duryodhana on seeing the Pandava
\narmy arranged in battle order approached the preceptor

\npaśyaitam pānduputrānāmācārya mahatīm camūm<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n

\n"Look, 0 Teacher, look at this huge Pandava army
\narranged in order of battle by your clever disciple

\nIn this enormous army there are courageous men and
\nmighty wielders of bow like unto Bhima and Arjuna\u2014
\nYuyudhana, Virata, and Drupada, the great chariot-war rior. <\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nThere are Dhrishtaketu, Chekitana and the man of great
\nmight, the king of Kashi, there are Purujit and Kuntibhoja
\nand Shaibya, the best of men. The powerful Yudhamanyu
\nis there and the mighty Uttamauja, Abhimanyu the son of
\nSubhadra, and the sons of Draupadi, great warriors all. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nasmākantu viśistā ye tānnibodha dvijottama<\/i> <\/font><\/p>\n

\nnāyakā mama sainyasya sanjnārtham tān<\/i> <\/font><\/p>\n

\nbravīmi te<\/i>                                                                     (7) <\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nThose among us who are possessed of extraordinary
\nstrength, those who are the leaders of my troops, of them
\nI recount the names that you may remember them, note: <\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nbhavān bhīsmasca karnaśca krpasca samitinjayah<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n

\n aśvatthāmā vikarnasca saumadattirjayadrathah<\/i>     (8)<\/font><\/p>\n

\n anye ca bahavah śūrā madarthe tyaktajīvitāh<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n

\n nānāśastrapraharanāh sarve yuddhaviśāradāh        <\/i>  (9) <\/font><\/p>\n

\nYourself and Bhishma, Kama and Kripa, the winner in
\nbattle, Aswatthama, Vikama, Bhurisrava, the son of  Somadatta, and Jayadratha, and many another man of courage
\nhave given up their attachment to life for my sake. All of <\/font><\/p>\n

\nthem are skilled in warfare and are accoutred with many
\nkinds of weapons. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nparyāptam tvidametesām balam bhīmābhirak-<\/i> <\/font><\/p>\n

\nThe strength of this army of ours is unlimited, on top of
\nthat Bhishma is our defender; the strength of that army of
\ntheirs is limited and Bhima alone is their hope and
\nprotection. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nayanesu ca sarvesu yathdbhāgamavasthitāh<\/i> <\/font><\/p>\n

\nbhismamevdbhiraksantu bhavantah sarva eva hi<\/i> <\/font><\/p>\n

\n                                                                                       (11) <\/font><\/p>\n

\nTherefore all of you should protect Bhishma alone by
\nremaining at your appointed stations among the troops at
\nall the entries to the battle-field. <\/font><\/p>\n

\ntaśya śanjanayan harsarh kuruvrddh  pitāmahah<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n

\n simhanādam vinadyoccaih śankham dadhmau pratā pavān  <\/i>(12) <\/font><\/p>\n

\nGiving rise 10 joy in Duryodhana’s heart, grandfather
\nBhishma the oldest of the Kauravas uttered a loud battle-
\ncry that resounded through the field and blew with great
\npower into his conch. <\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\ntatah śankhāśca bheryaśca panavānakagomukhāh<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n

\n sahasaivābhyahanyanta sa śabdastumulo’bhavat<\/i> <\/font><\/p>\n

\nThen suddenly there arose the sounds of conchs and horns
\nand war-drums of all kinds, the battle-field was filled with
\nloud noises. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nThereupon, standing on their huge chariot drawn by white
\nhorses, Krishna and Pandu’s son Arjuna blew their divine
\nconchs.<\/font><\/p>\n

\n paundram dadhnau mahasankham bhimakarmd
\nvrkodarah<\/i> (15) <\/font><\/p>\n

\nHrishikesha blew his Pancajanya, Arjuna his conch
\nnamed Devadatta, and Bhima of terrifying deeds blew his
\nmighty conch named Paundra.<\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nanantavijayam rājā kuntīputro yudhisthirah<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n

\n nakulah sahadevasca sughosamanipuspakau<\/i>            (16) <\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nKing Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti, blew his conch
\nAnantavijaya, and Nakula and Sahadeva blew theirs
\nnamed Sughosha and Manipushpaka. <\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nkāsyaśca paramesvāsah śikhandī ca mahārathah<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n

\n dhrstadyumno virātaśca sātyakiścāparajitah<\/i> (17)<\/font><\/p>\n

\n drupado draupadeyāśca sarvaśah prthivīpate<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n

\nsaubhadraśca mahābāhuhā Sankhan dadhmuh prthak

\nKashi’s king, the supreme archer, the great chariot-fighter
\nShikhandi, Dhrishtadyumna and the unbeaten warrior
\nSatyaki, Drupada and Draupadi’s sons, the long-armed
\nson of Subhadra, all blew their respective conchs from
\nevery direction.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nThat mighty report sent tumultuous echoes through earth
\nand sky and rent asunder the hearts of Dhritarashtra’s sons. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nThen, after the missiles had begun to fly, Pandu’s son
\nArjuna raised his bow and said these words to Hrishikesha: <\/font><\/p>\n

\nArjuna said:<\/b> <\/font><\/p>\n

\n"O sinless one, place my chariot at a mid-point between
\nthe two armies, that I may gaze for sometime at these
\nadversaries seized with the desire for battle. Let me see
\nwho are they who want a fight, who have come together
\nhere with the object of performing in the battle-field acts
\ndear to Duryodhana, the misguided son of Dhritarashtra." <\/font><\/p>\n

\n evamukto hrsīkeśo guddkesena bhārata<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n

\nOn hearing these words of Arjuna, Hrishikesha placed
\nthat excellent chariot at a mid-point between the two
\narmies, and arriving in front of Bhishma, Drona and all
\nthe other princes, said, "O Partha, watch all the Kurus
\ngathered here." <\/font><\/p>\n

\ntātrāpaśyat sthitānpārthah pitrnatha pitāmahān<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n

\n     ācāryānmātulānbhrātrnputrdnpautrdnsakhimstathā<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n

\n śvaśurān suhrdaścaiva senayorubhayorapi<\/i>     (26) <\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nIn that field of battle, Partha saw standing among the two
\nopposing forces, fathers and grandfathers, teachers,
\nuncles, brothers, sons and grandsons, friends, fathers-in-
\nlaw and intimate companions, all his kith and kin. <\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\ntānsamīksya sa kaunteyah sarvān bandhunavasthitān<\/i> <\/font><\/p>\n

\nkrpayā paraydvisto visidannidamabravit<\/i> (27) <\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nOn seeing all those friends and relations thus standing
\nbefore him, Kunti’s son was overtaken by an acute sense
\nof pity and said these words, his heart stricken with grief: <\/font><\/p>\n

\ndrstvemān svajanān krsna yuyutsum samavasthitān<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n

\n"O Krishna, on seeing all these my own people ranged for
\nbattle, the limbs of my body are feeling weary, my mouth
\nis getting parched, all over the body there is shivering and
\nthe hairs stand on edge, the Gandiva bow is slipping out of
\nmy hand without control, my skin is as if burning with fire. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nna caśaknomyavasthātum bhramativa came manah<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n

\n nimittāni ca paśyāmi vipantdni kesava<\/i> (30) <\/font><\/p>\n

\nI can no longer keep standing, my mind is beginning as if
\nto whirl,  Keshava, I am seeing evil omens. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nna ca śreyo’nupaśyāmi hatvā svajanamahāve<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n

\n na kānkse vijayam krsna na ca rājyam sukhāni ca<\/i> <\/font><\/p>\n

\nI do not see any good from killing my own people in
\nbattle. O Krishna, I do not wish for victory, nor do I want
\na kingdom nor seek happiness either. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nkim no rājyena govinda kim bhogairjīvitena vā<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n

\n yesāmarthe kānksitam no rājyam bhogāh sukhāni ca<\/i> <\/font><\/p>\n

\nTell me, O Govinda, what do we gain from kingdom?
\nwhat profit is there in enjoyment? of what use is life
\nitself? Those for whom kingdom and enjoyment and life
\nbecome desirable are themselves present in this battlefield
\nafter renouncing their life and wealth\u2014they who are
\nteachers and fathers, sons and grandfathers, <\/font><\/p>\n

\nmātulāh śvaśurāh pautrdh sydlah sambandhinas-<\/i> <\/font><\/p>\n

\nuncles, fathers-in-law, grandsons, brothers-in-law and
\nother relatives. O Madhusudana, if they kill me, even then I do not wish to kill
\nthem, not even for the sake of dominion over the three worlds, what to say of
\nthe lordship of earth. What, O Janardana, can be our happiness of mind by killing the sons of Dhritarashtra ? <\/font><\/p>\n

\npāpamevāśrayedasmān hatvaitānātatāyinah<\/i> <\/font><\/p>\n

\ntasmānnārhā vayam hantum dhārtarāstrān svabāndhavān<\/i> <\/font><\/p>\n

\nsvajanam hi katham hatvā sukhinah syāma mādhava<\/i> (36) <\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nThey are out to kill, nevertheless, to kill them
\nwould be to give shelter in our mind to sin. Therefore, since the sons of
\nDhritarashtra are our kin, we are not the persons fit to destroy them. In what
\nway, O Madhava, shall we be
\nhappy by killing our own people ? <\/font><\/p>\n

\nyadyapyete na paśyanti lobhopahatacetasah<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n

\nkulaksayakrtam dosarh mitradrohe ca pdtakam<\/i> <\/font><\/p>\n

\nUnder the influence of greed they have lost their understanding, and they do not appreciate the evils arising from
\na deterioration of the clans and the heinous sin of doing
\nharm to one’s friends. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nkatham na jneyamasmābhih pāpādasmdnnivartitum <\/i> <\/font><\/p>\n

\nkulaksayakrtam dosam prapasyadbhirjandrdana<\/i> <\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nBut we, O Janardana, realise the harm caused by the
\ndeterioration of clans. Why should we not wake to the <\/font><\/p>\n

\nkulaksaye pranaśyanti kuladharmāh sanātanāh<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n

\ndharme naste kulam krtsnamadharmo’bhibhavatyuta   <\/i>(39) <\/font><\/p>\n

\nWith a deterioration of the clan, all the established laws of
\nright living come to an end, and with that, unrighteousness overtakes the entire clan. <\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nadharmābhibhavāt krsna pradusyanti kulastriyah<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n

\n strīsu dustāsu vārsneya jāyate varnasankarah<\/i> (40) <\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nUnder the influence of unrighteousness, 0 Krishna, the
\nwomen of the clan lose their virtue; when the women lose
\ntheir virtue, there is admixture of castes. <\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nsankaro narakāyaiva kulaghnānām kulasya ca<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n

\n patanti pitaro hyesām luptapindodakakriydh<\/i>   (41) <\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nThe admixture of castes is the cause of the clansmen and
\nthe destroyers of clans going to hell, because the ancestors
\nare thereby deprived of the food and water given them as
\nofferings and they fall from the world of the fathers. <\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\ndosairetaih kulaghnānām varnasankarakārakaih<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n

\nutsādyante jātidharmāh kuladharmāśca sasvatah<\/i> <\/font><\/p>\n

\n                                                                              (42) <\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nAs a result of all these evils caused by the destroyers of
\nclans and leading to the admixture of castes, the old
\nestablished laws of the nation and the clan come to
\nnaught. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nutsannakuladharmānām manusyānām Janārdana<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n

\n narake niyatam vāso bhavatītyanuśruma<\/i> (43) <\/font><\/p>\n

\nIn hell is assigned the abode of those the laws of whose
\nclans have come to naught; this is what we have heard <\/font><\/p>\n

\nahobata mahatpāpam kartum vyavasitā vayam<\/i> <\/font><\/p>\n

\nyadrājyasukhalobhena hantum svajanamudyatāh<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n

\nLo ! the extremely heinous sin we had determined to
\ncommit, that we were making efforts to kill our own
\npeople out of greed for the pleasure of dominion. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nyadi māmapratīkāramaśastram śastrapānayah<\/i> <\/font><\/p>\n

\ndhārtardstrā rane hanyustanme ksemataram bhavet<\/i> <\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nIt were better for me if the sons of Dhritarashtra accoutred in arms should kill me when I am without arms and
\nmake no effort to resist. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nevamuktvārjunah sankhye rathopastha upviśat<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n

\n visrjya saśram cāpam śokasamvignamānasah<\/i> (46) <\/font><\/p>\n

\nSanjaya said: <\/font><\/p>\n

\nWith these words, his mind stained by the upsurge of
\ngrief, Arjuna threw away his bow with the arrow fixed on
