Pressed under hard rules we<b> <\/b>are<b>;<\/b> <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">We have discarded our fondness for our native land; forbidden for us <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">To look upon cherished faces. Is it true then<br \/>\nThat this world is someone&#8217;s play, to whose eyes the bondage of rules<br \/>\nIs only an image of his fancy? True then that there is someone<br \/>\nUnder whose direction we\u2014blinded by illusion\u2014<br \/>\nWander in a field hemmed in by delusion on an unreal earth?<br \/>\nThere glimmers a city of mirage, light is but the rays of darkness,<br \/>\nThe wisdom of the wise is a dream&#8217;s orderliness.<br \/>\nA dense woodland is the earthly life,<br \/>\nThoughts there fly about like fireflies<br \/>\nIn the darkness. Vainly did we think then<br \/>\nThat this utterance was the musing of hopelessness<br \/>\nOf one conquered in the battle of life, only a wailing of the weak.<br \/>\nNow I see that wailing is true; it is the ultimate vision.<br \/>\nGo hence, 0 happy dream; come thou, sorrow!<br \/>\nAn invincible teacher art thou, own brother of wisdom,<br \/>\nThe first-born from the womb of the great Delusion.<br \/>\nCome, let me embrace you. It is just meet<br \/>\nYou play with me in this dense forest, <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\" align=\"center\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page &#8211; 448<\/font><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">It is a fitting playground for the sorrow you are.<br \/>\nIn vain the human being dances about<br \/>\nWith the short-lived couple, pain and happiness.<br \/>\nDeath will come and stay the dance. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">PRIEST <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Just at this hour art thou defeated in the battle of life,<br \/>\n0 King! In your burning heart is the utterance of hopelessness.<br \/>\nThe cry of grief is in your voice and not the Knowledge of Brahman.<br \/>\nOther is that acquisition beyond the reach of the weak,<br \/>\nA great truth attained by heroes only, hidden in the cavern.<br \/>\nTrue it is that it is a dance, the earthly life.<br \/>\nWhose dance is it? The Lord of the people is the master of dancing.<br \/>\nEmbrace not sorrow but him, 0 King,<br \/>\nCarry him with you, in battle after battle, flood with frenzy<br \/>\nYour body and soul, the home of delight.<br \/>\nVictory and defeat, the battle-field aloud with wailings<br \/>\nAre various footsteps only of the dancer<br \/>\nOn a varying background. The king and the kingdom<br \/>\nAre for the sake of the decorative beauty of the dance<br \/>\nUpon the arena of the stage. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">KING <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">With empty words you comfort me.<br \/>\nThe heart knows its own sorrows. Narayana dances?<br \/>\nThe demoniac nature dances in the chamber of illusion,<br \/>\nIt is the demon-girl&#8217;s doll&#8217;s play\u2014she builds and breaks<br \/>\nAlways the living dolls. When she sees a broken heart,<br \/>\nShe laughs, her curiosity satisfied. Illusion is true, <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\" align=\"center\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page &#8211; 449<\/font><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">True this desolate spot, true also the defeat,<br \/>\nSorrow is true. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Happiness is not true upon this earth,<br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Nor true is the kingdom. True it is that ignorance is<br \/>\n&#8211;                                              punished,<br \/>\n:<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Love is not true in this world filled with lamentation. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;text-indent:25px\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">PRIEST <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Delve then into your sorrowing heart and wallow in its slime,<br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Probe into your suffering soul and there find the secret of&nbsp; sorrow.<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Finally you will recognise Krishna, full of delight, full of<br \/>\n,                                                    love&quot;.<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">It is the play of the great Lover, this life upon earth.<br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;text-indent:25px\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">KING<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;text-indent:25px\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">The love that kisses with the lips of thunder,<br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">The love that burns always with the agony of diseases, <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">The love whose guise is sorrow and hate and death,<br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">That is of the lowest kind. Compassion is there in the human&nbsp;   heart; <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Creation is not kind, nor Nature, nor God.<br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Man builds an image of his own compassion, a<br \/>\nfanciful idol <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">In his own heart. That shadow he worships as God. There is<br \/>\nBrahman. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">God is but a dream, another kind of dream,<br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">A false consolation created by the imagination of the<br \/>\nmiserable. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">PRIEST <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">O King, through your utterance, I am witnessing<br \/>\nKrishna-play <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page &#8211; 450<\/font><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">And my body shivers in delight; I hear<br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">As though Radha, the beloved, is chiding in the words of your mouth.<br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Never shall I see his face nor hear his name,<br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Nor shall I know that he exists any more.<br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Such utterance in the mouth of a mother is the vain fancy of an atheist,<br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">I understand. So 1 say it is not a mere consolation,<br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">O King! You will surely see my Krishna<br \/>\nManifesting again in a befitting guise: <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\"><i>[Here one line of the Bengali manuscript is illegible.}<\/i> <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;text-indent:25px\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">THE VOICE OF KRISHNA <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">The toy is mine. Have done with these<br \/>\nwords. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;text-indent:25px\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">PRIEST <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">I obey, but remember, 0 great King,<br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">What the Vaishnava says. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;text-indent:35px\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">KING <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">In vain is such an address.<br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">The tiger is the king of this forest, not I. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page &#8211; 451<\/font><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">As to a beggar, the forest deity doles out <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Scanty fruit and roots\u2014just to appease the hunger. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">I roam about without my army, abandoned by relatives. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">The name king sounds a taunt to my ears. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">He is not a king who is abandoned by friends in danger, <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">One who lies tired in this desolate spot. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">PRIEST <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">There are your subjects, we are there.
