\nSummary of Conclusions <\/font><\/p>\n

<\/b><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nRecent questions about the Revised Edition of Savitri<\/i> can be
\ngrouped under four headings. The explanations offered in this
\nbooklet are summarised below: <\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\n(1) The authority for the new edition.<\/b> Some aspects of this
\nquestion were discussed in the first booklet "On the New Edition of Savitri".<\/i> In the present booklet, it has been shown
\nmore clearly that Sri Aurobindo and the Mother knew that
\nerrors could enter the text and approved of correcting these
\nerrors. The final decisions for the new edition have been made, after looking
\nclosely at the manuscripts, by disciples authorised by the Mother to make such decisions. <\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\n(2) Agreement with the Mother’s translation.<\/b> The Mother used
\nthe 1954 edition when she translated passages of Savitri<\/i> into
\nFrench. Her translation differs, therefore, from the Centenary
\nedition. While it does not correspond exactly to any one edition, her translation agrees with some of the corrections made
\nin the new edition. <\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\n(3) The<\/b> subjective element.<\/b> The manuscripts, fair copies and
\ntypescripts of Savitri<\/i> show what Sri Aurobindo intended and
\nhow the text was sometimes altered when it passed through
\nother hands. These documents have survived in almost all cases.
\nThe correction of mistakes in transcription and the restoration of authentic readings is usually a straightforward procedure. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nBut Sri Aurobindo dictated his final revision. This left room
\nfor errors due to the scribe’s misunderstanding of the dictation. These errors are evident only from the context. Some
\nsuch errors have been emended in each edition. In the work <\/font><\/p>\n

\non the new edition, the discovery of previously unknown drafts
\nby Sri Aurobindo has minimised the number of corrections
\nthat have had to be made without manuscript support. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nWhere the exercise of editorial judgment could not be
\navoided, alternative readings with notes have been provided
\nin the Supplement. As the examples discussed in this booklet
\nillustrate, all editorial decisions have been made with the aim
\nof publishing Savitri<\/i> in Sri Aurobindo’s own words and in the
\nform that most accurately represents his intention. <\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\n(4) Differences between editions.<\/b> A list of examples of alleged
\n"mistakes" in the Revised Edition of Savitri<\/i> has been circulated by a group critical of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram Trust.
\nA discussion of the items selected by that group has formed
\nmost of this booklet. Detailed analysis of the disputed points
\nhas provided readers with the information needed to evaluate
\nthe readings in the new edition. <\/font><\/p>\n
