An unhappy corner in eternity.<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

It lived
\n\t\t\t\tupon the margin of the Idea<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Protected by Ignorance as in a
\n\t\t\t\tshell.<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Then, hoping to learn the secret of this world<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

He
\n\t\t\t\tpeered across its scanty fringe of sight,<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

To disengage from
\n\t\t\t\tits surface-clear obscurity<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

the Force that moved it and the
\n\t\t\t\tIdea that made<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Imposing smallness on the Infinite,<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

The
\n\t\t\t\truling spirit of its littleness,<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

the divine law that gave it
\n\t\t\t\tright to be,<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Its calm on Nature and its need in Time.<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

He
\n\t\t\t\tplunged his gaze into the siege of mist<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

That held this ill-lit
\n\t\t\t\tstraitened continent<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Ringed with the skies and seas of
\n\t\t\t\tignorance<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

And kept it safe from Truth and Self and Light.<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

As
\n\t\t\t\twhen a search-light stabs the Night’s blind breast<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

And
\n\t\t\t\tdwellings and trees and figures of men appear<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

As if revealed
\n\t\t\t\tto an eye in Nothingness,<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Ail lurking things were tom out of
\n\t\t\t\ttheir veils<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

And held up in his vision’s sun-white blaze.<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

A
\n\t\t\t\tbusy restless uncouth populace<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Teemed in their dusky unnoted
\n\t\t\t\tthousands there.<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

In a mist of secrecy wrapping the
\n\t\t\t\tworld-scene<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

the little deities of Time’s nether act<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Who
\n\t\t\t\twork remote from Heaven’s controlling eye,<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Plotted, unknown to
\n\t\t\t\tthe creatures whom they move,<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

the small conspiracies of this
\n\t\t\t\tpetty reign<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Amused with the small contrivings, the brief hopes <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\tif immanent in the shadows started up <\/FONT>

\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tImps
\n\t\t\t\twith wry limbs and carved beast visages, <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tSprite
\n\t\t\t\tprompters goblin-wizened or faery-small, <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tAnd
\n\t\t\t\tgenii fairer but unsouled and poor <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tAnd
\n\t\t\t\tfallen beings, their heavenly portion lost, <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tAnd
\n\t\t\t\terrant divinities trapped in Time’s dust. <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tIgnorant,and
\n\t\t\t\tdangerous wills but armed with power, <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tHalf-animal,
\n\t\t\t\thalf-god their mood, their shape. <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tOut
\n\t\t\t\tof the greyness of a dim background <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tTheir
\n\t\t\t\twhispers corne, an inarticulate force, <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tAwake
\n\t\t\t\tin mind an echoing thought or word, <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\ttheir sting of impulse the heart’s sanction draw, <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\tin that little Nature do their work <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tAnd
\n\t\t\t\tml its powers and creatures with unease. <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tIts
\n\t\t\t\tseed of joy they curse with sorrow’s fruit, <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tPut
\n\t\t\t\tout with error’s breath its scanty lights <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tAnd
\n\t\t\t\tturn its surface truths to falsehood’s ends, <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tIts
\n\t\t\t\tsmall emotions spur, its passions drive <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tTo
\n\t\t\t\tthe abyss or through the bog and mire: <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tOr
\n\t\t\t\telse with a goad of hard dry lusts they prick,<\/P><\/p>\n

While jogs on
\n\t\t\t\tdevious ways that nowhere lead<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Life’s cart finding no issue
\n\t\t\t\tfrom ignorance.<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

To sport with good and evil is their law; <\/FONT>\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tLuring
\n\t\t\t\tto failure and meaningless success, <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tAll
\n\t\t\t\tmodels they corrupt, ail measures cheat, <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tMake
\n\t\t\t\tknowledge a poison, virtue a pattern dull <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tAnd
\n\t\t\t\tlead the endless cycles of desire <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tThrough
\n\t\t\t\tsemblances of sad or happy chance <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tTo
\n\t\t\t\tan inescapable fatality. <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tAil
\n\t\t\t\tby their influence is enacted there. <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tNor
\n\t\t\t\tthere alone is their empire or their role: <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tWherever
\n\t\t\t\tare soulless minds and guideless lives <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t

These crooked fashioners take up
\n\t\t\t\ttheir task.<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

To ail half-conscious worlds they extend their
\n\t\t\t\treign.<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Here too these godlings drive our human hearts,<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Our
\n\t\t\t\tnature’s twilight is their lurking place.<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Here too the
\n\t\t\t\tdarkened primitive heart obeys<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

the veiled suggestions of a
\n\t\t\t\thidden Mind<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

That dogs our knowledge with misleading light<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

And
\n\t\t\t\tstands between us and the truth that saves.<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

It speaks to us
\n\t\t\t\twith the voices of the Night: <\/FONT><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tOur
\n\t\t\t\tdarkened lives to greater darkness move; <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tOur
\n\t\t\t\tseekings listen to calamitous hopes.<\/P><\/p>\n

A structure of unseeing
\n\t\t\t\tthoughts is built<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

And reason used by an irrational Force.<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

This
\n\t\t\t\tearth alone is not our teacher and nurse; <\/FONT><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tThe
\n\t\t\t\tpowers of ail the worlds have entrance here.<\/P><\/p>\n

In their own
\n\t\t\t\tfields they follow the wheel of law<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

And cherish the safety of
\n\t\t\t\ta settled type; <\/FONT><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tOn
\n\t\t\t\tearth out of their changeless orbit thrown<\/P><\/p>\n

Their law is kept,
\n\t\t\t\tlost their fixed form of things.<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Into a creative chaos they
\n\t\t\t\tare cast<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Where ail asks order but is driven by Chance; <\/FONT>\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tStrangers
\n\t\t\t\tto earth-nature, they must learn earth’s ways,<\/P><\/p>\n

Aliens or
\n\t\t\t\topposites, they must unite: <\/FONT><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tThey
\n\t\t\t\twork and battle and with pain agree: <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tThese
\n\t\t\t\tjoin, those part, ail parts and joins anew,<\/P><\/p>\n

Till all have
\n\t\t\t\tfound their divine harmony.<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Our life’s uncertain way winds
\n\t\t\t\tcircling on,<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Our mind’s unquiet search asks always light,<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Till
\n\t\t\t\tthey have learnt their secret in their source,<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

In the light of
\n\t\t\t\tthe Timeless and its spaceless home,<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

In the joy of the Eternal
\n\t\t\t\tsole and one.<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

But now the Light supreme is far away: <\/FONT>\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tOur
\n\t\t\t\tconscious life obeys the inconscience’ laws; <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tTo
\n\t\t\t\tignorant purposes and blind desires <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tOur
\n\t\t\t\thearts are moved by an ambiguous force; <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tEven
\n\t\t\t\tour mind’s conquests wear a battered crown.<\/P><\/p>\n

A slowly changing
\n\t\t\t\torder binds our will.<\/p>\n

This is our doom until our souls are

\n\t\t\t\tthis enigmatic world<\/P><\/p>\n

Which seems at once an enormous brute
\n\t\t\t\tmachine<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

And a slow unmasking of the Spirit in things,<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

In
\n\t\t\t\tthis revolving chamber without walls<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

In which God sits
\n\t\t\t\timpassive everywhere<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

As if unknown to himself and by us
\n\t\t\t\tunseen<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

In a miracle of inconscient secrecy,<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Yet is ail here
\n\t\t\t\this action and his will.<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

In this whirl and sprawl through
\n\t\t\t\tinfinite vacancy<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

The Spirit became Matter and lay in the
\n\t\t\t\twhirl<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

A body sleeping without sense or soul.<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

A mass
\n\t\t\t\tphenomenon of visible shapes<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Supported by the silence of the
\n\t\t\t\tVoid<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Appeared in the eternal Consciousness<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

And seemed an
\n\t\t\t\toutward and insensible world.<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

There was none there to see and
\n\t\t\t\tnone to feel; <\/FONT><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tOnly
\n\t\t\t\tthe miraculous Inconscient, <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>

\n\t\t\t\tsubtle wizard skilled, was at its task. <\/FONT>

\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tManaging
\n\t\t\t\tcreation’s marvellous device, <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tMarking
\n\t\t\t\tmechanically dumb wisdom’s points, <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tUsing
\n\t\t\t\tthe unthought inevitable Idea, <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tIt
\n\t\t\t\tdid the works of God’s intelligence <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tOr
\n\t\t\t\twrought the will of some supreme Unknown. <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tStill
\n\t\t\t\tconsciousness was hidden in Nature’s womb, <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tUnfelt
\n\t\t\t\twas the Bliss whose rapture dreamed the worlds. <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tBeing
\n\t\t\t\twas an inert substance driven by Force. <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tAt
\n\t\t\t\tfirst was only an etheric Space: <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tIts
\n\t\t\t\thuge vibrations circled round and round<\/P><\/p>\n

Housing some
\n\t\t\t\tunconceived initiative: <\/FONT><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\tby their dance this solid scheme, <\/FONT>

\n\t\t\t\tIts
\n\t\t\t\tmightiness in the atom shut to rest; <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tMasses
\n\t\t\t\twere forged or feigned and visible shapes; <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tLight
\n\t\t\t\tflung the photon’s swift revealing spark <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tAnd
\n\t\t\t\tshowed, in the minuteness of its flash <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tImaged,
\n\t\t\t\tthis cosmos of apparent things. <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tThus
\n\t\t\t\thas been made this real impossible world, <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tAn
