\nTHERE ceased the limits of the labouring Power. <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nBut being and creation cease not there.<\/P><\/p>\n

For
\nThought transcends the circles of mortal mind,<\/p>\n

It is
\ngreater than its earthly instrument:
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nThe godhead crammed into mind's narrow space <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nEscapes on every side into some vast <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nThat is a passage to infinity. <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nIt moves eternal in the spirit's field, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nA runner towards the far spiritual light, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nA child and servant of the spirit's force. <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nBut mind too falls back from a nameless peak. <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nHis being stretched beyond the sight of Thought. <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nFor the spirit is eternal and unmade<\/P><\/p>\n

And not
\nby thinking was its greatness born, <\/font><\/p>\n

\nAnd not by thinking can its knowledge come. <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nIt knows itself and in itself it lives, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nIt moves where no thought is nor any form. <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nIts feet are steadied upon finite things, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nIts wings can dare to cross the Infinite. <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nArriving into his ken a wonder space <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nOf great and marvellous meetings called his steps, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nWhere Thought leaned on a Vision beyond thought <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nAnd shaped a world from the Unthinkable. <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nOn peaks imagination cannot tread, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nIn the horizons of a tireless sight, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nUnder a blue veil of eternity <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

Origin

\nIts speed that outstrips the ambling of the hours, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nIts force that strides invincibly through Time, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nIts mights that bridge the gulf twixt man and God, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nIts lights that combat Ignorance and Death. <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nIn its vast ambit of ideal Space <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nWhere beauty and mightiness walk hand in hand, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nThe Spirit's truths take form as living Gods <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nAnd each can build a world in its own right. <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nIn an air which doubt and error cannot mark. <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nWith the stigmata of their deformity, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nIn communion with the musing privacy <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nOf a truth that sees in an unerring light <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nBut since our secret selves are next of kin, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nA breath of unattained divinity <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nVisits the imperfect earth on which we toil; <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nAcross a gleaming ether's golden laugh<\/P><\/p>\n

A light
\nfalls on our vexed unsatisfied lives,<\/p>\n

\nthought comes down from the ideal worlds<\/p>\n

\nmoves us to new-model even here <\/p>\n

Our
\nspirits break free from their environment,<\/p>\n

\nfuture brings its face of miracle near,<\/p>\n

Its
\ngodhead looks at us with present eyes,<\/p>\n

Acts
\ndeemed impossible grow natural; <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nWe feel the hero's immortality, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe courage and the strength death cannot touch <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nAwake in limbs that are mortal, hearts that fail; <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nWe move by the rapid impulse of a will<\/P><\/p>\n

That
\nscorns the tardy trudge of mortal Time.<\/p>\n

These
\npromptings come not from an alien sphere: <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nOurselves are citizens of that mother State,<\/P><\/p>\n

\nAdventurers, we have colonised Matter's night.<\/p>\n

But now
\nour rights are barred, our passports void;
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nWe live self-exiled from our heavenlier home. <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nAn errant ray from the immortal Mind <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nAccepted the earth's blindness and became <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nOur human thought, servant of Ignorance. <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nAn exile, labourer on this unsure globe <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nCaptured and driven in Life's nescient grasp, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nHampered by obscure cell and treacherous nerve, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nIt dreams of happier states and nobler powers, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nThe natural privilege of unfallen gods <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nRecalling still its old lost sovereignty. <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nAmidst earth's mist and fog and mud and stone <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nIt still remembers its exalted sphere <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nAnd the high city of its splendid birth. <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nA memory steals from a lost heaven of Truth, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nA wide release comes near, a Glory calls, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nIn glamorous passages of half-veiled light <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nWandering, a brilliant shadow of itself, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nThis quick uncertain leader of blind gods, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

Hired by

\nIt recovers its renounced imperial right, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nIt wears once more its purple robe of thought <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nCommunicant and prophet of the Unborn <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nHeir to delight and immortality. <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nAll things are real that here are only dreams, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nIn our unknown depths sleeps their reserve of truth, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nOn our unreached heights they reign and come to us <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nIn thought and muse trailing their robes of light. <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nBut our dwarf will and cold pragmatic sense <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nAdmit not the celestial visitants: <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nAwaiting us on the Ideal's peaks <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nOr guarded in our secret self unseen <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nYet flashed sometimes across the awakened soul, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nHide from our lives their greatness, beauty, power. <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nOur present feels sometimes their regal touch, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nOur future strives towards their luminous thrones: <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nOut of spiritual secrecy they gaze,<\/P><\/p>\n

Immortal
\nfootfalls in mind's corridors sound: <\/font><\/p>\n

\n

\n
\nOur souls can climb into the shining planes, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nThe breadths from-which they came can be our home. <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nHis privilege regained of shadowless sight <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe Thinker entered the immortals' air <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nAnd drank again his pure and mighty source. <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nImmutable in rhythmic calm and joy <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nHe saw, sovereignly free in limitless light, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe unfallen planes, the thought-created worlds <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nAnswers Truth'^ call as to a parent's voice, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nForm luminous leaps from the all-shaping beam <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nAnd Will is a conscious chariot of the Gods, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nAnd Life, a splendour-stream of musing Force, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nCarries the voices of the mystic Suns. <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nA happiness it brings of whispered truth; <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nThere runs in its flow honeying the bosom of Space <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n      A triple realm of ordered thought came first,<\/P><\/p>\n

A small
\nbeginning of immense ascent: <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

\nAbove were bright ethereal skies of mind, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nA packed and endless soar as if sky pressed sky <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nButtressed against the Void on bastioned light; <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nThe highest strove to neighbour eternity, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nThe largest widened into the infinite. <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nBut though immortal, mighty and divine, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nThe first realms were close and kin to human mind; <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nTheir deities shape our greater thinking's roads,<\/P><\/p>\n

A
\nfragment of their puissance can be ours: <\/font><\/p>\n

\n

\n
\nThese breadths were not too broad for our souls to range,<\/P><\/p>\n

These
\nheights were not too high for human hope.<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

A triple
\nflight led to this triple world.<\/p>\n

Although
\nabrupt for common strengths to tread,<\/p>\n

\nupward slope looks down on our earth-poise: <\/font><\/p>\n

\nOn a slant not too precipitously steep <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nOne could turn back travelling deep descending lines <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nTo commune with the mortal's universe. <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe mighty wardens of the ascending stair <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nWho intercede with the all-creating Word, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nThere waited for the pilgrim heaven-bound soul; <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nHolding the thousand keys of the Beyond <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nThey proffered their knowledge to the climbing mind <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nBut, nearer. Gods and living Presences. <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nA march of friezes marked the lowest steps; <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nFantastically ornate and richly small,<\/P><\/p>\n

They had
\nroom for the whole meaning of a world,<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Symbols
\nminute of its perfection's joy,<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Strange
\nbeasts that were Nature's forces made alive<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

And,
\nwakened to the wonder of his role,<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Man
\ngrown an image undefaced of God<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

And
\nobjects the fine coin of Beauty's reign; <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nBut wide the terrains were those levels serve. <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nIn front of the ascending epiphany <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nWorld-Time's enjoyers, favourites of World-Bliss, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nThe Masters of things actual, lords of the hours, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nPlaymates of youthful Nature and child God, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nCreators of Matter by hid stress of Mind <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nWhose subtle thoughts support unconscious Life <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nAnd guide the fantasy of brute events, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nStood there, a race of young keen-visioned Gods, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nKing-children born on Wisdom's early plane, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nTaught in her school world-making's mystic play. <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nArch-masons of the eternal Thaumaturge, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nMoulders and measurers of fragmented space, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nThey have made their plan of the concealed and known <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nA dwelling-house for the invisible King. <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nObeying the Eternal's deep command <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nThey have built in the material front of things <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nThis wide world-kindergarten of young souls <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nwizardry of an ordered universe.<\/p>\n

\nAll-containing was contained in form,<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Oneness
\nwas carved into units measurable,<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

The
\nlimitless built into a cosmic sum: <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nUnending Space was beaten into a curve, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nIndivisible Time into small minutes cut, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nThe infinitesimal massed to keep secure <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nThe mystery of the Formless cast into form. <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nInvincibly their craft devised for use <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nThe magic of sequent number and sign's spell, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nDesign's miraculous potency was caught <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nLaden with beauty and significance <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nAnd by the determining mandate of their gaze <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nFigure and quality equating joined <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nIn an inextricable identity. <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n
\nOn each event they stamped its curves of law <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nAnd its trust and charge of burdened circumstance; <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nA free and divine incident no more <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nAt each moment willed or adventure of the soul, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nA line foreseen of an immutable plan, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nIt lengthened a fate-bound mysterious chain, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nOne step more in Necessity's long march. <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nA term was set for every eager Power <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nRestraining its will to monopolise the world, <\/font>\n<\/p>\n
