A quick obscurity, a seeking stir.<\/p>\n

There was a
\n\t\t\t\twrithing of half-conscious force<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Hardly awakened from
\n\t\t\t\tinconscient sleep<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

And tied to an instinct-driven Ignorance,<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

To
\n\t\t\t\tfind itself and find its hold on things.<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Inheritor of poverty
\n\t\t\t\tand loss,<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Assailed by memories that fled when seized,<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Haunted
\n\t\t\t\tby a forgotten uplifting hope,<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

It strove with a blindness as
\n\t\t\t\tof groping hands<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

To fill the aching and disastrous gap<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Between
\n\t\t\t\tearth-pain and the bliss from which Life fell.<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

A world that
\n\t\t\t\tever seeks for something missed,<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Hunting for a joy that earth
\n\t\t\t\thas failed to keep,<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Too near to our gates its unappeased
\n\t\t\t\tunrest<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

For peace to live on the inert solid globe.<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

It has
\n\t\t\t\tjoined its hunger to the hunger of earth,<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

It has given the law
\n\t\t\t\tof craving to our lives,<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

It has made our spirit’s need a
\n\t\t\t\tfathomless gulf.<\/p>\n

An Influence entered mortal night and day,<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

A
\n\t\t\t\tshadow overcast the time-born race; <\/FONT><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\tIn
\n\t\t\t\tthe troubled stream where leaps a blind heart-pulse<\/P><\/p>\n

And the
\n\t\t\t\tnerve-beat of feeling wakes in sense<\/p>\n

Dividing Matter’s sleep
\n\t\t\t\tfrom conscious Mind,<\/p>\n

There strayed a call that knew not why it
\n\t\t\t\tcame.<\/p>\n

A Power beyond earth’s scope has touched the earth; <\/FONT>\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n

the infant
\n\t\t\t\tlaugh that rang through rime is hushed: <\/FONT><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>

\n\t\t\t\tMan’s
\n\t\t\t\tnatural joy of life is overcast<\/P><\/p>\n

And sorrow is his nurse of
\n\t\t\t\tdestiny.<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

the animal’s thoughtless joy is left behind,<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Care
\n\t\t\t\tand reflection burden his daily walk: <\/FONT><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tHe
\n\t\t\t\thas risen to greatness and to discontent,<\/P><\/p>\n

He is awake to the
\n\t\t\t\tInvisible.<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Insatiate seeker, he has ail to learn: <\/FONT>\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tHe
\n\t\t\t\thas exhausted now life’s surface acts,<\/P><\/p>\n

His being’s hidden
\n\t\t\t\trealms remain to explore.<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

He becomes a mind, he becomes a
\n\t\t\t\tspirit and self; <\/FONT><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tIn
\n\t\t\t\this fragile tenement he grows Nature’s lord,<\/P><\/p>\n

In him Matter
\n\t\t\t\twakes from its long obscure trance,<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

In him earth feels the
\n\t\t\t\tGodhead drawing near.<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

An eyeless Power that sees no more its
\n\t\t\t\taim,<\/p>\n

A restless hungry energy of Will,<\/p>\n

Life cast her seed
\n\t\t\t\tin the body’s indolent mould; <\/FONT><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\tIt
\n\t\t\t\twoke from happy torpor a blind Force <\/FONT>

\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\tthe enormous labour of the Void <\/FONT>

\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tPerturbing
\n\t\t\t\twith her dreams the vast routine <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tAnd
\n\t\t\t\tdead roll of a slumbering universe <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tthe
\n\t\t\t\tmighty prisoner struggled for release. <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tAlive
\n\t\t\t\twith her yearning woke the inert cell, <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\tthe heart she kindled a fire of passion and need, <\/FONT>

\n\t\t\t\tgroping consciousness in a voiceless world, <\/FONT>

\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\tguideless sense was given her for her road; <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tThought
\n\t\t\t\twas withheld and nothing now she knew<\/P><\/p>\n

But ail the unknown was
\n\t\t\t\thers to feel and clasp.<\/p>\n

Obeying the push of unborn things
\n\t\t\t\ttowards birth<\/p>\n

Inflicting on the body desire and

<\/P><\/p>\n

Imposing on inconscience consciousness<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

She brought
\n\t\t\t\tinto Matter’s dull tenacity<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Her anguished claim to her lost
\n\t\t\t\tsovereign right,<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Her tireless search, her vexed uneasy
\n\t\t\t\theart,<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Her wandering unsure steps, her cry for change.<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Adorer
\n\t\t\t\tof a joy without a name,<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

In her obscure cathedral of
\n\t\t\t\tdelight<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

To dim dwarf gods she offers secret rites.<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

But vain
\n\t\t\t\tunending is the sacrifice,<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

The priest an ignorant mage who
\n\t\t\t\tonly makes<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Futile mutations in the altar’s plan<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

And casts
\n\t\t\t\tblind hopes into a powerless flame.<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

A burden of transient
\n\t\t\t\tgains weighs down her steps<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

And hardly under that load can she
\n\t\t\t\tadvance; <\/FONT><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tBut
\n\t\t\t\tthe hours cry to her, she travels on<\/P><\/p>\n

Passing from thought to
\n\t\t\t\tthought, from want to want; <\/FONT><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tHer
\n\t\t\t\tgreatest progress is a deepened need.<\/P><\/p>\n

Matter dissatisfies, she
\n\t\t\t\tturns to Mind; <\/FONT><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tShe
\n\t\t\t\tconquers earth, her field, then claims the heavens, <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tInsensible,
\n\t\t\t\tbreaking the work she has done <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tthe
\n\t\t\t\tstumbling ages over her labour pass, <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tAnd
\n\t\t\t\tstill no great transforming light came down <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tAnd
\n\t\t\t\tno revealing rapture touched her fall. <\/FONT>

\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\tmakes of night a path to unknown dawns <\/FONT>

\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\ta dark due to some diviner state. <\/FONT>

Ascending
\n\t\t\t\tslowly with unconscious steps,<\/p>\n

A foundling of the gods she

Like a child-soul left near the gates of Hell <\/FONT>\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\tchanced into a grey obscurity <\/FONT>

\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\twith instincts from the mindless gulfs <\/FONT>

\n\t\t\t\tate Death’s food that she might breathe awhile, <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tShe
\n\t\t\t\twas their inmate and adopted waif. <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tAccepting
\n\t\t\t\tsubconscience, in dumb darkness’ reign <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tA
\n\t\t\t\tsojourner, she hoped not any more. <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tThere
\n\t\t\t\tfar away from Truth and luminous thought<\/FONT><\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tHe
\n\t\t\t\tsaw the original seat, the separate birth <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t


\n\t\t\t\tOf
\n\t\t\t\tthe dethroned, deformed and suffering Power. <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\tunhappy face of falsity made true, <\/FONT>
\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\tcontradiction of our divine birth, <\/FONT>

\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\tto beauty and to light, <\/FONT>

\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\tnarrowness and torpor held her still,<\/P><\/p>\n

A darkness clung to her
\n\t\t\t\tuneffaced by Light.<\/p>\n

There neared no touch redeeming from

Its prayer denied, it
\n\t\t\t\tfumbled after thought.<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

As yet not powered to think, hardly to
\n\t\t\t\tlive,<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

It opened into a weird and pigmy world<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Where this
\n\t\t\t\tunhappy magic had its source.<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

On dim confines where Life and
\n\t\t\t\tMatter meet<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

He wandered among things half-seen,
\n\t\t\t\thalf-guessed,<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

Pursued by ungrasped beginnings and lost
\n\t\t\t\tends.<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

There life was born but died before it could live.<\/p>\n

<\/P><\/p>\n

There
\n\t\t\t\twas no solid ground, no constant drift; <\/FONT><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t<\/P>
