\nAs all must be until the Highest is gained<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn whom the world and self grow true and one:<\/span><\/font>

Till that is reached our journeying cannot cease.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAlways a nameless goal beckons beyond,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAlways ascends the zigzag of the gods<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd upward points the spirit’s climbing Fire.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThis breath of hundred-hued felicity<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd its pure heightened figure of Time’s joy,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTossed upon waves of flawless happiness,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHammered into single beats of ecstasy,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThis fraction of the spirit’s integer<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCaught into a passionate greatness of extremes,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThis limited being lifted to zenith bliss,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHappy to enjoy one touch of things supreme,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPacked into its sealed small infinity,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIts endless time-made world outfacing Time,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA little output of God’s vast delight.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe moments stretched towards the eternal Now,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe hours discovered immortality,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut, satisfied with their sublime contents,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOn peaks they ceased whose tops half-way to heaven<\/span><\/p>\n

Pointed to an apex they could never mount,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo a grandeur in whose air they could not live.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThis creature who hugs his limits to feel safe,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThese heights declined a greater adventure’s call.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA glory and sweetness of satisfied desire<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTied up the spirit to golden posts of bliss.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIt could not house the wideness of a soul<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhich needed all infinity for its home.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA memory soft as grass and faint as sleep,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe beauty and call receding sank behind<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLike a sweet song heard fading far away<\/span><\/p>\n

\nUpon the long high road to Timelessness.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAbove was an ardent white tranquillity.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA musing spirit looked out on the worlds<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd like a brilliant clambering of skies<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPassing through clarity to an unseen Light<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLarge lucent realms of Mind from stillness shone.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut first he met a silver-grey expanse<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhere Day and Night had wedded and were one:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

It was a tract of dim and shifting rays<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Parting Life’s sentient flow from Thought’s self-poise.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A coalition of uncertainties<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

There exercised uneasy government<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

On a ground reserved for doubt and reasoned guess,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A rendezvous of Knowledge with Ignorance.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

At its low extremity held difficult sway<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A mind that hardly saw and slowly found,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Its nature to our earthly nature close<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

And kin to our precarious mortal thought<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

That looks from soil to sky and sky to soil<\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

But. knows not the below nor the beyond,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIt only sensed itself and outward things.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThis was the first means of our slow ascent<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFrom the half-conscience of the animal soul<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLiving in a crowded press of shape-events<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn a realm it cannot understand nor change:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Only it sees and acts in a given scene<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd feels and joys and sorrows for a while.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe ideas that drive the obscure embodied spirit<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAlong the roads of suffering and desire<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn a world that struggles to discover Truth,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFound here their power to be and Nature-Force.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHere are devised the forms of an ignorant life<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThat sees the empiric fact as settled law,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLabours for the hour and not for eternity<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd trades its gains to meet the moment’s call:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The slow process of a material mind<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhich serves the body it should rule and use<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd needs to lean upon an erring sense,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWas born in that luminous obscurity.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAdvancing tardily" from a limping start,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCrutching hypothesis upon argument,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThroning its theories as certitudes,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIt reasons from the half-known to the unknown,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEver constructing its frail house of thought,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEver undoing the web that it has spun.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA twilight sage whose shadow seems to him Self,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMoving from minute to brief minute lives,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA king dependent on his satellites<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSigns the decrees of ignorant ministers,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA judge in half-possession of his proofs,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA voice clamant of uncertainty’s postulates.<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

An architect of knowledge, not its source.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThis powerful bondslave of his instruments<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThinks his low station Nature’s highest top,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOblivious of his share in all things made<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd haughtily humble in his own conceit<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBelieves himself a spawn of Matter’s mud<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd takes his own creations for his cause.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo eternal light and knowledge meant to rise,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nUp from man’s bare beginning is our climb;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Out of earth’s heavy smallness we must break,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWe must search our nature with spiritual fire:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

An insect crawl preludes our glorious flight;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Our human state cradles the future god,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOur mortal frailty an immortal force.<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

At the glow-worm top of these pale glimmer-realms<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhere dawn-sheen gambolled with the native dusk<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd helped the Day to grow and Night to fail,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEscaping over a wide and shimmering bridge,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe came into a realm of early Light<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd the regency of a half-risen sun.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOut of its rays our mind’s full orb was born.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAppointed by the Spirit of the Worlds<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo mediate with the unknowing depths,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA prototypal deft Intelligence<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHalf-poised on equal wings of thought and doubt<\/span><\/p>\n

\nToiled ceaselessly twixt being’s hidden ends.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA Secrecy breathed in life’s moving act;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A covert nurse of Nature’s miracles,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

It shaped life’s wonders out of Matter’s mud:<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

It cut the pattern of the shapes of things,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

It pitched mind’s tent in the vague ignorant Vast.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A master Magician- of measure and device<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Has made an eternity from recurring forms<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd to the wandering spectator thought<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAssigned a seat on the inconscient stage.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOn earth by the will of this Arch-Intelligence<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA bodiless energy put on Matter’s robe;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Proton and photon served the imager Eye<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo change things subtle into a physical world<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd the invisible appeared as shape<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd the impalpable was felt as mass:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Magic of percept joined with concept’s art<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd lent to each object an interpreting name:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Idea was disguised in a body’s artistry,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And by a strange atomic law’s mystique<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A frame was made in which the sense would put<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Its symbol picture of the universe.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Even a greater miracle was done.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The mediating light linked body’s power,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nThe sleep and dreaming of the tree and plant,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The animal’s vibrant sense, the thought in man,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

To the effulgence of a Ray above.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Its skill endorsing Matter’s right to think<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCut sentient passages for the mind of flesh<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd found a means for Nescience to know.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nOffering its little squares and cubes of word<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

As figured substitutes for reality,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A mummified mnemonic alphabet,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nIt helped the unseeing force to read her works.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A buried consciousness arose in her<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And now she dreams herself human and awake.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

But all was still a mobile Ignorance;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Still Knowledge could not come and firmly grasp<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThis huge invention seen as a universe.<\/span><\/font>

An aide of the inventor intellect,<\/font><\/p>\n

It cut Truth into manageable bits<\/font><\/p>\n

That each might have his ration of thought-food,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Then new-built Truth’s slain body by its art:<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

A robot exact and serviceable and false<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDisplaced the spirit’s finer view of things:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A polished engine did the work of a god.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

None the true body found, its soul seemed dead:<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

None had the inner look which sees Truth’s whole;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

All glorified the glittering substitute.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Then from the secret heights a wave swept down,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A brilliant chaos of rebel light arose;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

It looked above and saw the dazzling peaks,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIt looked within and woke the sleeping god.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nImagination called her shining squads<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThat venture into undiscovered scenes<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhere all the marvels lurk none yet has known:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Lifting her beautiful and miraculous head,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nShe conspired with inspiration’s sister brood<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo fill thought’s skies with glimmering nebulae.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA bright Error fringed the mystery-altar’s frieze;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Darkness grew nurse to wisdom’s occult sun,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMyth suckled knowledge with her lustrous milk;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The infant passed from dim to radiant breasts.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThus worked the Power upon the growing world;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Its subtle craft withheld the full-orbed blaze,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCherished the soul’s childhood and on fictions fed<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFar richer in their sweet and nectarous sap<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNourishing its immature divinity <\/span><\/p>\n

\nThan the staple or dry straw of Reason’s tilth,<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEthereal thinkings into Matter’s world;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Its gold-horned herds trooped into earth’s cave-heart.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Its morning rays illume our twilight’s eyes,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Its young formations move the mind of earth<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

To labour and to dream and new-create,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nTo feel beauty’s touch and know the world and self:<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The Golden Child began to think and see.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

In those bright realms are Mind’s first forward steps.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIgnorant of all but eager to know all,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIts curious slow enquiry there begins,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEver searching it grasps at shapes around,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEver it hopes to find out greater things.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nArdent and golden-gleamed with sunrise fires,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAlert it lives upon invention’s verge.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nYet all it does is on an infant’s scale,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAs if the cosmos were a nursery game,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMind, life the playthings of a Titan’s babe.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAs one it works who builds a mimic fort<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMiraculously stable for a while,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMade of the sands upon a bank of Time<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMid an occult eternity’s shoreless sea.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA small keen instrument the great Puissance chose,.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAn arduous pastime passionately pursues;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

To teach the Ignorance is her difficult charge,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHer thought starts from an original nescient Void<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd what she teaches she herself must learn<\/span><\/p>\n

\nArousing knowledge from its sleepy lair.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor knowledge comes not to us as a guest<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

The mighty daemon lies unshaked within,<\/font><\/p>\n

To evoke, to give it form is Nature’s task.<\/font><\/p>\n

All was a chaos of the true and false,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Mind sought amid deep mists of Nescience,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

It looked within itself but saw not God.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

A material interim diplomacy<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Denied the truth that transient truths might live<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

And hid the deity in creed and guess<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

That the World-Ignorance might grow slowly wise.<\/font><\/p>\n

This was the imbroglio made by sovereign Mind<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Looking from a gleam-ridge into the Night<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

In its first tamperings with Inconscience:<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Its alien dusk baffles her luminous eyes;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Her rapid hands must learn a cautious zeal;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Only a slow advance the earth can bear.<\/font><\/p>\n

Yet was her strength unlike the unseeing earth’s<\/font><\/p>\n

Compelled to handle makeshift instruments<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Invented by the life-force and the flesh.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Earth all perceives through doubtful images,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

All she conceives in hazardous jets of sight,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Small lights kindled by touches of groping thought.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Incapable of the soul’s direct inlook<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

She sees by spasms and solders knowledge-scrap,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Makes Truth the slave-girl of her indigence,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Expelling Nature’s mystic unity<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Cuts into quantum and mass the moving All;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

She takes for measuring-rod her ignorance.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn her own domain a pontiff and a seer,<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIt binds itself by what itself creates.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA slave of a fixed mass of absolute rules,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIt sees as Law the habits of the world,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIt sees as Truth the habits of the mind.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn its realm of concrete images and events<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTurning in a worn circle of ideas<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd ever repeating old familiar acts,<\/span><\/font>

\nIgnorant of the deep law of being’s ways<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd failure could not slow its fiery clutch;<\/span><\/font>

One chance made true warranted all the rest.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAttempt, not victory, was the charm of life.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAn uncertain winner of uncertain stakes,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nInstinct its dam and the life-mind its sire,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIt ran its race and came in first or last.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nYet were its works nor small and vain nor null;<\/span><\/font>

It nursed a portion of infinity’s strength<\/font><\/p>\n

\nCoercing the plastic stuff of cosmic Mind,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nShe sets the hard inventions of her brain<\/span><\/p>\n
