\nLooked at him like form-bound spiritual thoughts<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFiguring the movements of the Ineffable.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAspects of being donned world-outline; forms<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThat open moving doors on things divine,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBecame familiar to his hourly sight,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe symbols of the Spirit’s reality,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe living bodies of the Bodiless<\/span><\/p>\n

\nGrew near to him, his daily associates.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe exhaustless seeings of the unsleeping Mind,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLetterings of its contact with the invisible,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSurrounded him with countless pointing signs;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

The voices of a thousand realms of Life<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMissioned to him her mighty messages.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe heaven-hints that invade our earthly lives,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe dire imaginations dreamed by Hell,<\/span><\/font>

The absoluteness of their single cry<\/font><\/p>\n

And the sovereign sweetness or violent poetry<\/font><\/p>\n

Of their beautiful or terrible delight.<\/font><\/p>\n

All thought can know or widest sight perceive<\/font><\/p>\n

Were near to heart’s contact, felt by spirit-sense.<\/font><\/p>\n

Asking for entry at his nature’s gates<\/font><\/p>\n

They crowded the widened spaces of his mind,<\/font><\/p>\n

His self-discovery’s naming witnesses,<\/font><\/p>\n

Offering their marvel and their multitude.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThese now became new portions of himself,<\/span><\/font>

The figures of his spirit’s greater life,<\/font><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The moving scenery of his large time-walk<\/font><\/p>\n

Or the embroidered tissue of his sense:<\/font><\/p>\n

These took the place of intimate human things<\/font><\/p>\n

And moved as close companions of his thoughts,<\/font><\/p>\n

Or were his soul’s natural environment.<\/font><\/p>\n

Tireless the heart’s adventure of delight,<\/font><\/p>\n

Endless the kingdoms of the Spirit’s bliss,<\/font><\/p>\n

Unnumbered tones struck from one harmony’s strings;<\/font><\/p>\n

Each to its wide-winged universal poise,<\/font><\/p>\n

Its fathomless feeling of the All in one,<\/font>

\nIts single retreat into Truth’s secrecies,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAll was found there the Unique had dreamed and made<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTinging with ceaseless rapture and surprise<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd an opulent beauty of passionate difference<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe recurring beat that moments God in Time.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOnly was missing the sole timeless Word<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThat carries eternity in its lonely sound,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Idea self-luminous key to all ideas,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe integer of the Spirit’s perfect sum<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThat equates the unequal All to the equal One,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe single sign interpreting every sign,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe absolute index to the Absolute.<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

There walled apart by its own innerness<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn a mystical barrage of dynamic light<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe saw a lone immense high-curved world-pile<\/span><\/p>\n

\nErect like a mountain chariot of the Gods<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMotionless under an inscrutable sky.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAs if from Matter’s plinth and viewless base<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo a top as viewless, a carved sea of worlds<\/span><\/p>\n

\nClimbing with foam-maned waves to the Supreme<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAscended towards breadths immeasurable;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

It hoped to soar into the Ineffable’s reign:<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

A hundred levels raised it to the Unknown.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSo it towered up to heights intangible<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd disappeared in the hushed conscious Vast<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAs climbs a storeyed temple-tower to heaven<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBuilt by the aspiring soul of man to live<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNear to his dream of the Invisible.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nInfinity calls to it as it dreams and climbs;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Its spire touches the apex of the world,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMounting into great voiceless stillnesses<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIt marries the earth to screened eternities.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAmid the many systems of the One<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMade by an interpreting creative joy<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAlone it points us to our journey back<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOut of our long self-loss in Nature’s deeps;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Planted on earth it holds in it all realms:<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

It is a brief compendium of the Vast.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThis was the single stair to being’s goal.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA summary of the stages of the spirit,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIts copy of the cosmic hierarchies<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRefashioned in our secret air of self<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA subtle pattern of the universe.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIt is within, below, without, above.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nActing upon this visible Nature’s scheme<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIt wakens our earth-matter’s heavy doze<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo think and feel and to react to joy,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIt models in us our diviner parts,<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Lifts mortal mind into a greater air,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Makes yearn this life of flesh to intangible aims,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Links the body’s death with immortality’s call:<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Out of the swoon of the Inconscience<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

It labours towards a superconscient Light.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

If earth were all and this were not in her,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Thought could not be nor life-delight’s response:<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Only material forms could then be her guests<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Driven by an inanimate world-force.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Earth by this golden superfluity<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Bore thinking man and more than man shall bear;<\/font><\/p>\n

This higher scheme of being is our cause<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

And holds the key to our ascending fate;<\/font>

\nIts Influences and godheads of the unseen,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIts unthought logic of Reality’s acts<\/span><\/p>\n

\nArisen from the unspoken truth in things,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHave fixed our inner life’s slow-scaled degrees.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIts steps are paces of the soul’s return<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFrom the deep adventure of material birth,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA ladder of delivering ascent<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd rungs that Nature climbs to deity.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOnce in the vigil of a deathless gaze<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThese grades had marked her giant downward plunge,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe wide and prone leap of a godhead’s fall.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOur life is a holocaust of the Supreme.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe great World-Mother by her sacrifice<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHas made her soul the body of our state;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Accepting sorrow and unconsciousness<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDivinity’s lapse from its own splendours wove<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe many-patterned ground of all we are.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAn idol of self is our mortality.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOur earth is a fragment and a residue;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Her power is packed with the stuff of greater worlds<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And steeped in their colour-lustres dimmed by her drowse;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

An atavism of higher births is hers,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHer sleep is stirred by their buried memories<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRecalling the lost spheres from which they fell.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nUnsatisfied forces in her bosom move;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

They are partners of her greater growing fate<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd her return to immortality;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

They consent to share her doom of birth and death;<\/font><\/p>\n

They kindle partial gleams of the All and drive<\/font>

An attempt, a drawing half-done is the world’s life;<\/font><\/p>\n

Its lines doubt their concealed significance,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIts curves join not their high-intended close.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nYet some first image of greatness trembles there,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd when the ambiguous crowded parts have met<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe many-toned unity to which they moved,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Artist’s joy shall laugh at reason’s rules;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The divine intention suddenly shall be seen,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe end vindicate intuition’s sure technique.<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A graph shall be of many meeting worlds,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A cube and union crystal of the gods;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A Mind shall think behind Nature’s mindless mask,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A conscious Vast fill the old dumb brute Space.<\/font><\/p>\n

This faint and fluid sketch of soul called man<\/font><\/p>\n

Shall stand out on the background of long Time<\/font><\/p>\n

A glowing epitome of eternity,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

A little point reveal the infinitudes.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

A Mystery’s process is the universe.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

At first was laid a strange anomalous base,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A void, a cipher of some secret Whole,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Where zero held infinity in its sum<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And All and Nothing were a single term,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

An eternal negative, a matrix Nought:<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Into its forms the Child is ever born<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Who lives for ever in the vasts of God.<\/font><\/p>\n

A slow reversal’s movement then took place:<\/font><\/p>\n

A gas belched out from some invisible Fire,<\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Of its dense rings were formed these million stars;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Upon earth’s new-born soil God’s tread was heard.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAcross the thick smoke of earth’s ignorance<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA Mind began to see and look at forms<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd groped for knowledge in the nescient Night:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Caught in a blind stone-grip Force worked its plan<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd made in sleep this huge mechanical world,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThat Matter might grow conscious of its soul<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd like a busy midwife the life-power<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDeliver the zero carrier of the All.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBecause eternal eyes turned on earth’s gulfs<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe lucent clarity of a pure regard<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd saw a shadow of the Unknowable<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMirrored in the Inconscient’s boundless sleep,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCreation’s search for self began its stir.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA spirit dreamed in the crude cosmic whirl,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMind flowed unknowing in the sap of life<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd Matter’s breasts suckled the divine Idea.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA miracle of the Absolute was born,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nInfinity put on a finite soul,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAll ocean lived within a wandering drop,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA time-made body housed the Illimitable.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo live this Mystery out our souls came here.<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

A Seer within who knows the ordered plan<\/span><\/p>\n

\nConcealed behind our momentary steps,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nInspires our ascent to viewless heights<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAs once the abysmal leap to birth and life.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis call had reached the Traveller in Time.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nApart in an unfathomed loneliness,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe travelled in his mute and single strength<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBearing the burden of the world’s desire.<\/span><\/font>
