A<\/font> MIGHTIER<\/font><\/b> task remained than all he had done.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

To that he turned from which all being comes,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA sign attending from the Secrecy<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhich knows the Truth ungrasped behind our thoughts<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd guards the world with its all-seeing gaze.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn the unapproachable stillness of his soul,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIntense, one-pointed, monumental, lone<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPatient he sat like an incarnate hope<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMotionless on a pedestal of prayer.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA Strength he sought that was not yet on earth,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHelp from a Power too great for mortal will,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Light of a Truth now only seen afar,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA sanction from his high omnipotent Source.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut from the appalling heights there stooped no voice<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe timeless lids were closed; no opening came.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA neutral helpless void oppressed the years.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn the texture of our bound humanity<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe felt the stark resistance huge and dumb<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf our inconscient and unseeing base,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe stubborn mute rejection in Life’s depths,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe ignorant No in the origin of things.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA veiled collaboration with the Night<\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

\nEven in himself survived and hid from his view:<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Still something in his earthly being kept<\/font><\/p>\n

\nIts kinship with the Inconscient whence it came.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

A shadowy unity with a vanished past<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Treasured in an old world-frame was lurking there,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Secret, unnoted by the illumined mind,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And in subconscious whispers and in dream<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nStill murmured at the mind’s and spirit’s choice.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Its treacherous elements spread like slippery grains<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Hoping the incoming Truth might stumble and fall,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And old ideal voices wandering moaned<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And pleaded for a heavenly leniency<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

To the gracious imperfections of our earth<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nAnd the sweet weaknesses of our mortal state.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

This now he willed to discover and exile,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The element in him betraying God.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nAll Nature’s recondite spaces were stripped bare,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nAll her dim crypts and corners searched with fire<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nWhere refugee instincts and unshaped revolts<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Could shelter find in darkness’ sanctuary<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Against the white purity of heaven’s cleansing flame.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nAll seemed to have perished that was undivine:<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Yet some minutest dissident might escape<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd still a centre lurk of the blind force.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor the Inconscient too is infinite;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The more its abysses we insist to sound,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe more it stretches, stretches endlessly.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThen lest a human cry should spoil the Truth<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe tore desire up from its bleeding roots<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd offered to the gods the vacant place.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThus could he bear the touch immaculate.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA last and mightiest transformation came.<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

His soul was all in front like a great sea<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFlooding the mind and body with its waves;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

His being, spread to embrace the universe,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

United the within and the without<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

To make of life a cosmic harmony,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

An empire of the immanent Divine.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

In this tremendous universality<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Not only his soul-nature and mind-sense<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Included every soul and mind in his,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

But even the life of flesh and nerve was changed<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And grew one flesh and nerve with all that lives;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

He felt the joy of others as his joy,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe bore the grief of others as his grief;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

His universal sympathy upbore,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Immense like ocean, the creation’s load<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

As earth upbears all beings’ sacrifice,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Thrilled with the hidden Transcendent’s joy and peace.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

There was no more division’s endless scroll;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

One grew the Spirit’s secret unity,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAll nature felt again the single bliss;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

There was no cleavage between soul and soul,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThere was no barrier between world and God.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOverpowered were form and memory’s limiting line;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The covering mind was seized and torn apart;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

It was dissolved and now no more could be,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The one Consciousness that made the world was seen;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

All now was luminosity and force.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAbolished in its last thin fainting trace<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe circle of the little self was gone;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The separate being could no more be felt;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

It disappeared and knew itself no more,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLost in the Spirit’s wide identity.<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

His nature grew a movement of the All,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Exploring itself to find .that all was He,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

His soul was a delegation of the All<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nThat turned from itself to join the one Supreme.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Transcended was the human formula,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nMan’s heart that had obscured the Inviolable<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Assumed the mighty beating of a god’s;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

His seeking mind ceased in the Truth that knows;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

His life was a flow of the universal life.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe stood fulfilled on the world’s highest line<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAwaiting the ascent beyond the world,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAwaiting the Descent the world to save.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA Splendour and a Symbol wrapped the earth,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSerene epiphanies looked and hallowed vasts<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSurrounded, wise infinitudes were close<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd bright remotenesses leaned near and kin.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSense failed in that tremendous lucency;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Ephemeral voices from his hearing fell<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And Thought potent no more sank large and pale<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Like a tired god into mysterious seas.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nThe robes of mortal thinking were cast down<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nLeaving his knowledge bare to absolute sight;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Fate’s driving ceased and Nature’s sleepless spur:<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The athlete heavings of the will were stilled<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

In the Omnipotent’s unmoving peace.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nLife in his members lay down vast and mute;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Naked, unwalled, unterrified it bore<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The immense regard of Immortality.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The last movement died and all at once grew still.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A weight that was the unseen Transcendent’s hand<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLaid on his limbs the spirit’s measureless seal,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nInfinity swallowed him into shoreless trance.<\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

As one who sets his sail towards mysteried shores<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDriven through huge oceans by the breath of God,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe fathomless below, the unknown around,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis soul abandoned the blind star-field. Space.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAfar from all that makes the measured world,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPlunging to hidden eternities it withdrew<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBack from mind’s foaming surface to the Vasts<\/span><\/p>\n

\nVoiceless within us in omniscient sleep.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAbove the imperfect reach of word and thought,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBeyond the sight, the last support of form,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLost in deep tracts of superconscient Light,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOr voyaging in blank featureless Nothingness,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSole in the trackless Incommensurable,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOr past not-self and self and selflessness,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTransgressing the dream-shores of conscious mind<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe reached at last his sempiternal base.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOn sorrowless heights no winging cry disturbs,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPure and untouched above the mortal play<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIs spread the spirit’s hushed immobile air.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThere no beginning is and there no end;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

There is the stable force of all that moves;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

There the aeonic labourer is at rest.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThere turns no keyed creation in the void,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNo giant mechanism watched by a soul;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

There creaks no fate-turned huge machinery;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The marriage of evil with good within one breast,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The clash of strife in the very clasp of love,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The dangerous pain of life’s experiment<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

In the values of Inconsequence and Chance,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The peril of mind’s gamble, throwing our lives<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

As stake in a wager of indifferent gods<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And the shirting lights and shadows of the idea<\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Falling upon the surface consciousness,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd in the dream of a mute witness soul<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCreating the error of a half-seen world<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhere knowledge is a seeking ignorance,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLife’s steps a stumbling series without suit,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIts aspect of fortuitous design,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIts equal measure of the true and false<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn that immobile and immutable realm<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFind no access, no cause, no right to live:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

There only reigns the Spirit’s motionless power<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Poised in itself through still eternity<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And its omniscient and omnipotent peace.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Thought clashes not with thought and truth with truth,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

There is no war of right with rival right;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

There are no stumbling and half-seeing lives<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPassing from chance to unexpected chance,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNo suffering of hearts compelled to beat<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn bodies of the inert Inconscient’s make.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nArmed with the immune occult unsinking Fire<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe guardians of Eternity keep its law<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor ever fixed upon Truth’s giant base<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn her magnificent and termless home.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThere Nature on her dumb spiritual couch<\/span><\/p>\n

\nImmutably transcendent knows her source<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd to the stir of multitudinous worlds<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAssents unmoved in a perpetual calm.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAll-causing, all-sustaining and aloof,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Witness looks from his unshaken poise,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAn Eye immense regarding all things done.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nApart, at peace above creation’s stir,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nImmersed in the eternal altitudes,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe abode defended in his shoreless self,<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Companioned only by the all-seeing One.<\/font><\/p>\n

A Life too boundless for the play in space,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A Soul without borders unconvinced of Time,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

He felt the extinction of the world’s long pain,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

He became the unborn Self that never dies,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

He joined the sessions of Infinity.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

On the cosmic murmur primal loneliness fell,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Annulled was the contact formed with time-born things,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Empty grew Nature’s wide community.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

All things were brought back to their formless seed,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The world was silent for a cyclic hour.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Although the afflicted Nature he has left<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Maintained beneath him her broad numberless fields,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Her enormous act, receding, failed remote<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

As if a soulless dream at last had ceased.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

No voice came down from the high silences,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

None answered from her desolate solitudes.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A stillness of cessation reigned, the wide<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Immortal hush before the gods were born;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

A universal Force awaited, mute,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe veiled Transcendent’s ultimate decree.<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

 <\/p>\n

\n

Then suddenly there came a downward look<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAs if a sea exploring its own depths,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA living Oneness widened at its core<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd joined him to unnumbered multitudes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA Bliss, a Light, a Power, a flame-white Love<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCaught all into a sole immense embrace,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nExistence found its truth on Oneness’ breast<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd each became the self and space of all.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe great world-rhythms were heart-beats of one Soul,<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/font>

<\/p>\n

To feel was a flame-discovery of God,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nAll mind was a single harp of many strings,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

All life a song of many meeting lives;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

For worlds were many, but the Self was one.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThis knowledge was now made a cosmos’ seed:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

This seed was cased in the safety of the Light,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIt needed not a sheath of Ignorance.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThen from the trance of that tremendous clasp<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd from the throbbings of that single Heart<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd from the naked Spirit’s victory<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA new and marvellous creation rose.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIncalculable outflowing infinitudes<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLaughing out an unmeasured happiness<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLived their innumerable unity;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Worlds where the being is unbound and wide<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Bodied unthinkably the egoless Self,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

"Rapture of beatific energies<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Joined Time to the Timeless, poles of a single joy;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

White vasts were seen where all is wrapped in all.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThere were no contraries, no sundered parts,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAll by spiritual links were joined to all<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd bound indissolubly to the One:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

"Each was unique but took all lives as its own,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd, following out these tones of the Infinite,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRecognised in himself the universe,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA splendid centre of infinity’s whirl<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPushed to its zenith’s height, its last expanse,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFelt the divinity of its own self-bliss<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRepeated in its numberless other selves.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIt took up tirelessly into its scope<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPersons and figures of the Impersonal,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAs if prolonging in a celestial count,<\/span><\/font>

An agent of its own transcendent Will,<\/span><\/p>\n

Accepting error, sorrow, death and pain,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIt pays the ransom of the ignorant Night,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRedeeming by its substance Nature’s fall.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHimself he knew and why his soul had gone<\/span><\/p>\n

\nInto earth’s passionate obscurity<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo share the labour of an errant Power<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhich by division hopes to find the One.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTwo beings he was, one wide and free above,<\/span><\/p>\n
