\nHe found the occult cave, the mystic door<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNear to the well of vision in the soul,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd entered where the Wings of Glory brood<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn the sunlit space where all is for ever known.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIndifferent to doubt and to belief,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAvid of the naked real’s single shock<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe shore the cord of mind that ties the earth-heart<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd cast away the yoke of Matter’s law.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe body’s rules bound not the spirit’s powers:<\/span><\/font>

When life had stopped its beats, death broke not in;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

He dared to live when breath and thought were still.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThus could he step into that magic place<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhich few can even glimpse with hurried glance<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLifted for a moment from mind’s laboured works<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd the poverty of Nature’s earthly sight.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAll that the Gods have learned is there self-known.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThere in a hidden chamber closed and mute<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAre kept the record graphs of the cosmic scribe,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd there the tables of the sacred Law,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIts riddling phrases and its blindfold terms,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe deep oxymoron of its truth’s repliques,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd recognise as a just necessity<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIts hard conditions for the mighty work,\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNature’s impossible Herculean toil<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOnly her warlock wisecraft could enforce,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIts law of opposition of the Gods,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIts list of inseparable contraries.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe dumb great Mother in her cosmic trance<\/span><\/p>\n

\nExploiting for creation’s joy and pain<\/span><\/p>\n

\nInfinity’s sanction to the birth of form,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAccepts indomitably to execute<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe will to know in an inconscient world,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe will to live under a reign of death,<\/span><\/font>

In the locked archives of the spirit’s crypt,<\/font><\/p>\n

\nHe read from within the text of the without:<\/span><\/font>

The riddle grew plain and lost its catch obscure.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA larger lustre lit the mighty page.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA purpose mingled with the whims of Time,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA meaning met the stumbling pace of Chance<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd Fate revealed a chain of seeing will;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

A conscious wideness filled the old dumb Space.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn the Void he saw throned the Omniscience supreme.<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA Will, a hope immense now seized his heart,<\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

This dusk room with its dark internal stair,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The infant soul in its small nursery school<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Mid objects meant for a lesson hardly learned<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Outgrow its early grammar of intellect<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And its imitation of Earth-Nature’s art,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Its earthly dialect to God-language change,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

In living symbols study Reality<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And learn the logic of the Infinite.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The Ideal must be Nature’s common truth,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The body illumined with the indwelling God,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The heart and mind feel one with all that is,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A conscious soul live in a conscious world.<\/font><\/p>\n

As through a mist a sovereign peak is seen,<\/font><\/p>\n

The greatness of the eternal Spirit appeared,<\/font><\/p>\n

Exiled in a fragmented universe<\/font><\/p>\n

Amid half-semblances of divine things.<\/font><\/p>\n

These now could serve no more his regal turn:<\/font><\/p>\n

The Immortal’s pride refused the doom to live<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA miser of the scanty bargain made<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBetween our littleness and bounded hopes<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd the compassionate Infinitudes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis height repelled the lowness of earth’s state:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

A wideness discontented with its frame<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Resiled from poor assent to Nature’s terms,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The harsh contract spurned and the diminished lease.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Only beginnings are accomplished here,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Our base’s Matter seems alone complete,<\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Here chaos sorts itself into a world,<\/font><\/p>\n

A brief formation drifting in the void:<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Apings of knowledge, unfinished arcs of power,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Flamings of beauty into earthly shapes,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Love’s broken reflexes of unity<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Swim, fragment mirrorings of a floating sun.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A packed assemblage of crude tentative lives<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Are pieced into a tessellated whole.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

There is no perfect answer to our hopes;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

There are blind voiceless doors that have no key;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Thought climbs in vain and brings a borrowed light,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCheated by counterfeits sold to us in life’s mart,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Our hearts clutch at a forfeited heavenly bliss.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

There is provender for the mind’s satiety,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

There are thrills of the flesh, but not the soul’s desire.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Here even the highest rapture Time can give<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Is a mimicry of ungrasped beatitudes,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A mutilated statue of ecstasy,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A wounded happiness that cannot live,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A brief felicity of mind or sense<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThrown by the World-Power to her body-slave,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Or a simulacrum of enforced delight<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

In the seraglios of Ignorance.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

For all we have acquired soon loses worth,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

An old disvalued credit in Time’s bank,<\/font><\/p>\n

\nImperfection’s cheque drawn on the
\nInconscient.<\/font><\/p>\n

An inconsequence dogs every effort made,<\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe saw the doubtfulness of all things here,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe incertitude of man’s proud confident thought,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe transience of the achievements of his force.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA thinking being in an unthinking world,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAn island in the sea of the Unknown,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe is a smallness trying to be great,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAn animal with some instincts of a god,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis life a story too common to be told,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis deeds a number summing up to nought,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis consciousness a torch lit to be quenched,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis hope a star above a cradle and grave.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd yet a greater destiny may be his,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor the eternal Spirit is his truth.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe can re-create himself and all around<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd fashion new the world in which he lives:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

He, ignorant, is the Knower beyond Time,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe is the Self above Nature, above Fate.<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

His soul retired from all that he had done.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHushed was the futile din of human toil,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nForsaken wheeled the circle of the days;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

In distance sank the crowded tramp of life.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Silence was his sole companion left.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nImpassive he lived immune from earthly hopes,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA figure in the ineffable Witness’ shrine<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPacing the vast cathedral of his thoughts<\/span><\/p>\n

\nUnder its arches dim with infinity<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd heavenward brooding of invisible wings.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA call was on him from intangible heights;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Indifferent to the little outpost Mind,<\/font>

His boundless thought was neighbour to cosmic sight:<\/font><\/p>\n

A universal light was in his eyes,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA golden influx flowed through heart and brain;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

A force came down into his mortal limbs,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA current from eternal seas of Bliss;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

He felt the invasion and the nameless joy.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAware of his occult omnipotent Source,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAllured by the omniscient Ecstasy,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA living centre of the Illimitable<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWidened to equate with the world’s circumference,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe turned to his immense spiritual fate.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAbandoned on a canvas of torn air,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA picture lost in far and fading streaks,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe earth-nature’s summits sank below his feet:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

He climbed to meet the infinite more above.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Immobile’s ocean-silence saw him pass,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAn arrow leaping through eternity<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSuddenly shot from the tense bow of Time,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA ray returning to its parent sun.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOpponent of that glory of escape,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe black Inconscient swung its dragon tail<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLashing a slumberous Infinite by its force<\/span><\/p>\n

\nInto the deep obscurities of form:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Death lay beneath him like a gate of sleep.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOne-pointed to the immaculate Delight,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nQuesting for God as for a splendid prey,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe mounted burning like a cone of fire.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo a few is given that godlike rare release.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOne among many thousands never touched,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEngrossed in the external world’s design,<\/span><\/font>

A pilgrim of the everlasting Truth,<\/font><\/p>\n

Our measures cannot hold his measureless mind;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

He has turned from the voices of the narrow realm<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd left the little lane of human Time.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn the hushed precincts of a vaster plan<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe treads the vestibules of the Unseen,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOr listens following a bodiless Guide<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo a lonely cry in boundless vacancy.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAll the deep cosmic murmur falling still,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe lives in the hush before the world was born,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis soul left naked to the timeless One.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFar from compulsion of created things<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThought and its shadowy idols disappear,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe moulds of form and person are undone.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe ineffable Wideness knows him for its own.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA lone forerunner of the Godward earth,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAmong the symbols of yet unshaped things<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWatched by closed eyes, mute faces of the Unborn,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe journeys to meet the Incommunicable,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHearing the echo of his single steps<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn the eternal courts of Solitude.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA nameless Marvel fills the motionless hours.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis spirit mingles with Eternity’s heart<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd bears the silence of the Infinite.<\/span><\/font>

\nOr mid this drowse and coma on Matter’s breast<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHeard like disjointed mutterings in sleep;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

It grouped the golden links that they had lost<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd showed to them their divine unity,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSaving from the error of divided self<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe deep spiritual cry in all that is.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAll the great Words that toiled to express the One<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWere lifted into an absoluteness of light,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAn ever-burning Revelation’s fire<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd the immortality of the eternal Voice.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThere was no quarrel more of truth with truth;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

The endless chapter of their differences<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRetold in light by an omniscient Scribe,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTravelled through difference towards unity,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMind’s winding search lost every tinge of doubt<\/span><\/font>

\nPeopled with voices and with visages<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAspired in a crescendo of the Gods<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFrom Matter’s abysses to the Spirit’s peaks.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAbove were the Immortal’s changeless seats,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhite chambers of dalliance with Eternity<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd the stupendous gates of the Alone.<\/span><\/p>\n
