\nA world of lovelier forms lies near to ours,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhere, undisguised by earth’s deforming sight,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAll shapes are beautiful and all things true.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn that lucent ambiance mystically clear<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe eyes were doors to a celestial sense,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHearing was music and the touch a charm<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd the heart drew a deeper breath of power.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThere dwell earth-nature’s shining origins:<\/span><\/font>

The perfect plans on which she moulds her works,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe distant outcomes of her travailing force<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRepose in a framework of established fate.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAttempted vainly now or won in vain,<\/span><\/p>\n

Admits small inrushes of a mighty breath<\/font><\/p>\n

Or fragrant circuits through gold lattices,<\/font><\/p>\n

It shields our ceiling of terrestrial mind<\/font><\/p>\n

From deathless suns and the streaming of God’s rain,<\/font><\/p>\n

A passage for the Powers that move our days,<\/font><\/p>\n

Occult behind this grosser Nature’s walls,<\/font><\/p>\n

A gossamer marriage-hall of Mind with Form<\/font><\/p>\n

Is hidden by a tapestry of dreams;<\/font><\/p>\n

Its intercession with the eternal Ray<\/font><\/p>\n

Inspires our transient earth’s brief-lived attempts<\/font><\/p>\n

At beauty and the perfect shape of things.<\/font><\/p>\n

In rooms of the young divinity of power<\/font><\/p>\n

Bodies that have no earthly counterpart<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTraverse the inner eye’s illumined trance<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd ravish the heart with their celestial tread<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPersuading heaven to inhabit that wonder sphere.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe future’s marvels wander in its gulfs;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Things old and new are fashioned in those depths:<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

A carnival of beauty crowds the heights<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn that magic kingdom of ideal sight.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn its antechambers of splendid privacy<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMatter and soul in conscious union meet<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLike lovers in a lonely secret place:<\/span><\/font>

In the clasp of a passion not yet unfortunate<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThey join their strength and sweetness and delight<\/span><\/p>\n

And is more real than this grosser frame.<\/font><\/p>\n

After the falling of mortality’s cloak<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Lightened is its weight to heighten its ascent;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Refined to the touch of finer environments<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

It drops old patterned palls of denser stuff,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Cancels the grip of earth’s descending pull<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And bears the soul from world to higher world,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Till in the naked ether of the peaks<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The spirit simplicity alone is left,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The eternal being’s first transparent robe.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

But when it must come back to its mortal load<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

And the hard ensemble of earth’s experience,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Then its return resumes that heavier dress.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

For long before earth’s solid vest was forged<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

By the technique of the atomic Void,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A lucent envelope of self-disguise<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Was woven round the secret spirit in things.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The subtle realms from those bright sheaths are made.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

This wonder-world with all its radiant boon<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Of vision and inviolate happiness,<\/font><\/p>\n

Only for expression cares and perfect form;<\/font><\/p>\n

Fair on its peaks, it has dangerous nether planes;<\/font><\/p>\n

Its light draws towards the verge of Nature’s lapse;<\/font>

\nImmortal it weaves for us death’s sombre robe<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThis medium serves a greater Consciousness:<\/span><\/font>

A vessel of its concealed autocracy,<\/font><\/p>\n

It is the subtle ground of Matter’s worlds,<\/font><\/p>\n

It is the immutable in their mutable forms,<\/font><\/p>\n

\nTo seize the absolute in shapes that pass,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo feel the eternal’s touch in time-made things,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThis is the law of all perfection here.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA fragment here is caught of heaven’s design,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nElse could we never hope for greater life<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd ecstasy and glory could not be.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEven in the littleness of our mortal state,.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEven in this prison-house of outer form,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA brilliant passage for the infallible Flame<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIs driven through gross walls of nerve and brain,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA Splendour presses or a Power breaks through,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEarth’s great dull barrier is removed awhile,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe inconscient seal is lifted from our eyes<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd we grow vessels of creative might.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe enthusiasm of a divine surprise<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPervades our life, a mystic stir is felt,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA joyful anguish trembles in our limbs,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA dream of beauty dances through the heart,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA thought from the eternal Mind draws near,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIntimations cast from the Invisible<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAwaking from Infinity’s sleep come down,<\/span><\/font>

\nThe unseized miracle of self-born shapes<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThat live for ever in the Eternal’s gaze.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHere in a difficult half-finished world<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIs a slow toiling of unconscious Powers;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Here is man’s ignorant divining mind,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

His genius born from an inconscient soil.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

To copy on earth’s copies is his art.<\/font><\/p>\n

For when he strives for things surpassing earth,<\/font><\/p>\n
