The labour of its stark unconsciousness<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRevealed the endless terrible Inane.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA spiritless blank Infinity was there;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

A Nature that denied the eternal Truth<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn the vain braggart freedom of its thought<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHoped to abolish God and reign alone.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThere was no sovereign Guest, no witness Light;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Unhelped it would create its own bleak world.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIts large blind eyes looked out on demon acts,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIts deaf ears heard the untruth its dumb lips spoke;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Its huge misguided fancy took vast shapes,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIts mindless sentience quivered with fierce conceits;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Engendering a brute principle of life<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEvil and pain begot a monstrous soul.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Anarchs of the formless depths arose,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nGreat titan beings and demoniac powers,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWorld-egos racked with lust and thought and will,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nVast minds and lives without a spirit within:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Impatient architects of error’s house,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLeaders of the cosmic ignorance and unrest<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd sponsors of sorrow and mortality<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\n
\n<\/font>

Embodied the dark Ideas of the Abyss.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA shadow substance into emptiness came,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDim forms were born in the unthinking Void<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd eddies met and made an adverse Space<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn whose black folds Being imagined Hell.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis eyes piercing the triple-plated gloom<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIdentified their sight with its blind stare:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Accustomed to the unnatural dark, they saw<\/span><\/p>\n

\nUnreality made real and conscious Night.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA violent, fierce and formidable world,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAn ancient womb of huge calamitous dreams,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCoiled like a larva in the obscurity<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThat keeps it from the spear-points of Heaven’s stars.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIt was the gate of a false Infinite,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAn eternity of disastrous absolutes,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAn immense negation of spiritual things.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAll once self-luminous in the spirit’s sphere<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTurned now into their own dark contraries:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Being collapsed into a pointless void<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThat yet was a zero parent of the worlds;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Inconscience swallowing up the cosmic Mind<\/span><\/p>\n

\nProduced a universe from its lethal sleep;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Bliss into black coma fallen, insensible,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCoiled back to itself and God’s eternal joy<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThrough a false poignant figure of grief and pain<\/span><\/p>\n

\nStill dolorously nailed upon a cross<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFixed in the soil of a dumb insentient world<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhere birth was a pang and death an agony,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLest all too soon should change again to bliss.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThought sat, a priestess of Perversity,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOn her black tripod of the triune Snake<\/span><\/p>\n

\nReading by opposite signs the eternal script,<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

A sorceress reversing Life’s God-frame.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn darkling aisles with .evil eyes for lamps<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd fatal voices chanting from the apse,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn strange infernal dim basilicas<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIntoning the magic of the unholy Word,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe ominous profound Initiate<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPerformed the ritual of her Mysteries.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThere suffering was Nature’s daily food<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAlluring to the anguished heart and flesh,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd torture was the formula of delight,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPain mimicked the celestial ecstasy.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThere Good, a faithless gardener of God,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWatered with virtue the world’s upas-tree<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd, careful of the outward word and act,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEngrafted his hypocrite blooms on native ill.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAll high things served their nether opposite:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The forms of Gods sustained a demon cult;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Heaven’s face became a mask and snare of Hell.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThere in the heart of vain phenomenon,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn an enormous action’s writhen core<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe saw a shape illimitable and vague<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSitting on Death who swallows all things born.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA chill fixed face with dire and motionless eyes,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHer dreadful trident in her shadowy hand<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOutstretched, she pierced all creatures with one fate.<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

When nothing was save Matter without soul<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd a spiritless hollow was the heart of Time,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThen Life first touched the insensible Abyss;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Awaking the stark Void to hope and grief :<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Her pallid beam smote the unfathomed Night ‘<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn which God hid himself from his own view.<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

In all-things she sought their slumbering mystic truth,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe unspoken Word .that inspires unconscious forms;<\/span><\/font>

She groped in his deeps for an invisible Law,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Fumbled in the dim subconscient for his mind<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And strove to find a way for spirit to be.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

But from the Night another answer came.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A seed was in that nether matrix cast,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A dumb unprobed husk of perverted truth,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A cell of an insentient infinite.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A monstrous birth prepared its cosmic form<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

In Nature’s titan embryo. Ignorance.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Then in a fatal and stupendous hour<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Something that sprang from the stark Inconscient’s sleep<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

"Unwillingly begotten by the mute Void,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Lifted its ominous head against the stars;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Overshadowing earth with its huge body of Doom<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

It chilled the heavens with the menace of a face.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A nameless Power, a shadowy Will arose<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Immense and alien to our universe.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

In the inconceivable Purpose none can gauge<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A vast Non-Being robed itself with shape,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe boundless Nescience of the unconscious depths<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Covered eternity with Nothingness.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A seeking Mind replaced the seeing Soul:<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Life grew into a huge and hungry death,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The Spirit’s bliss was changed to cosmic pain.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Assuring God’s self-cowled neutrality<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A mighty opposition conquered Space.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A sovereign ruling falsehood, death and grief,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

It pressed its fierce hegemony on earth;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Disharmonising the original style<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf the architecture of her fate’s design,<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

It falsified the primal cosmic Will<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And bound to struggle and dread vicissitudes<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The long slow process of the patient Power.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Implanting error in the stuff of things<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

It made an Ignorance of the all-wise Law;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

It baffled the sure touch of life’s hid sense,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nKept dumb the intuitive guide in Matter’s sleep,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDeformed the insect’s instinct and the brute’s,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDisfigured man’s thought-born humanity.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA shadow fell across the simple Ray:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Obscured was the Truth-light in the cavern heart<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThat burns unwitnessed in the altar crypt<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBehind the still velamen’s secrecy<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCompanioning the Godhead of the shrine.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThus was the dire antagonist Energy born<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWho mimes the eternal Mother’s mighty shape<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd mocks her luminous infinity<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWith a grey distorted silhouette in the Night.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nArresting the passion of the climbing soul,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nShe forced on life a slow and faltering pace,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHer hand’s deflecting and retarding weight<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIs laid on the mystic evolution’s curve:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The tortuous line of her deceiving mind<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Gods see not and man is impotent;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Oppressing the God-spark within the soul<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

She forces back to the beast the human fall.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Yet in her formidable instinctive mind<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

She feels the One grow in the heart of Time<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And sees the Immortal shine through the human mould.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Alarmed for her rule and full of fear and rage<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

She prowls around each light that gleams through the dark<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Casting its ray from the Spirit’s lonely tent,<\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\n<\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Hoping to enter with fierce stealthy tread<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd in the cradle slay the divine Child.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIncalculable are her strength and ruse,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHer touch is a fascination and a death;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

She kills her victim with his own delight;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Even Good she makes a hook to drag to Hell.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

For her the world runs to its agony.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Often the pilgrim on the Eternal’s road<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Ill-lit from clouds by the pale moon of Mind,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Or in devious by-ways wandering alone,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Or lost in deserts where no path is seen,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Falls overpowered by her lion leap,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A conquered captive under her dreadful paws.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Intoxicated by a burning breath<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And amorous groan of a destroying mouth,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Once a companion of the sacred Fire,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The mortal perishes to God and Light,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

An adversary governs heart and brain,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A Nature hostile to the Mother-force,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The self of life yields up its instruments :,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

To Titan and demoniac agencies<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

That aggrandise earth-nature and disframe:<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A cowled fifth-columnist is now thought’s guide;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

His subtle defeatist murmur slays the faith<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And, lodged in the breast or whispering from outside,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A lying inspiration fell and dark<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A new order substitutes for the divine.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A silence falls upon the spirit’s heights,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

From the veiled sanctuary the God retires,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Empty and cold is the chamber of the Bride;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The golden Nimbus now is seen no more,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNo longer burns the white spiritual ray<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\n<\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

And hushed for ever is the secret Voice.<\/font><\/p>\n

Then by the Angel of the Vigil Tower<\/font><\/p>\n

A name is struck from the recording book,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A flame that sang in Heaven sinks quenched and mute,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

In ruin ends the epic of a soul.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

This is the tragedy of the inner death<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

When forfeited is the divine element
\n'<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And only a mind and body live to die.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

For terrible agencies the Spirit allows<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd there are subtle and enormous Powers<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThat shield themselves with the covering Ignorance.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOffspring of the gulfs, agents of the shadowy Force,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHaters of light, intolerant of peace,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAping to the thought the shining Friend and Guide,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOpposing in the heart the eternal Will,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThey veil the occult uplifting Harmonist.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis wisdom’s oracles are made our bonds,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe doors of God they have locked with keys of creed<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd shut out by the Law his tireless Grace.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAlong all Nature’s lines they have set their posts<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd intercept the caravans of Light;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Wherever the Gods act, they intervene.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA yoke is laid upon the world’s dim heart,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMasked are its beats from the supernal Bliss,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd the closed peripheries of brilliant Mind<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBlock the fine entries of celestial Fire.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAlways the dark Adventurers seem to win;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Nature they fill with evil’s institutes,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTurn into defeats the victories of Truth,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nProclaim as falsehoods the eternal laws,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd load die dice of Doom with wizard lies,<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\n<\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

The world’s shrines they have occupied, usurped its thrones;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

In scorn of the dwindling chances of the Gods<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThey claim creation as their conquered fief<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd crown themselves the iron Lords of Time.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAdepts of the illusion and the masque,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe artificers of Nature’s fall and pain<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHave built their altars of triumphant Night<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn the clay temple of terrestrial life.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn the vacant precincts of the sacred Fire,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn front of the reredos in the mystic rite<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFacing the dim velamen none can pierce,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIntones his solemn hymn the mitred priest<\/span><\/p>\n

\nInvoking their dreadful presence in his breast:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Attributing to them the awful Name<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

He chants the syllables of the magic text<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And summons the unseen communion’s act, #<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

While twixt the incense and the muttered prayer<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

All the fierce bale with which the world is racked<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Is mixed in the foaming chalice of man’s heart<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And poured to them like sacramental wine.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Assuming names divine they guide an4 rule.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nOpponents of the Highest they have come .<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Out of their world of soulless thought and power<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

To serve by enmity the cosmic scheme<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Night is their refuge and strategic base.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Against the sword of Flame, the luminous Eye,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Bastioned they live in massive forts of gloom,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Calm and secure in sunless privacy:<\/font><\/p>\n
