\nAnd giant rivers pacing to vast seas,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA field of creation and spiritual hush,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSilence swallowing life’s acts into the deeps,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf thought’s transcendent climb and heavenward leap,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA brooding world of reverie and trance,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFilled with the mightiest works of God and man,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhere Nature seemed a dream of the Divine<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd beauty and grace and grandeur had their home,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHarboured the childhood of the incarnate Flame.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOver her watched millennial influences<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd the deep godheads of a grandiose past<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLooked on her and saw the future’s godheads come<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAs if this magnet drew their powers unseen.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEarth’s brooding wisdom spoke to her still breast;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Mounting from mind’s last peaks to mate with gods,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMaking earth’s brilliant thoughts a springing board<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo dive into the cosmic vastnesses,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe knowledge of the thinker and the seer<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSaw the unseen and thought the unthinkable,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOpened the enormous doors of the unknown,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRent Man’s horizons into infinity.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA shoreless sweep was lent to the mortal’s acts,<\/span><\/p>\n

The harmony of a rich culture’s tones<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRefined the sense and magnified its reach<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo hear the unheard and glimpse the invisible<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd taught the soul to soar beyond things known,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nInspiring life to greaten and break its bounds,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAspiring to the Immortals’ unseen world.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLeaving earth’s safety daring wings of Mind<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBore her above the trodden fields of thought<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCrossing the mystic seas of the Beyond<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo live on eagle heights near to the Sun.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThere wisdom sits on her eternal throne,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAll her life’s turns led her to symbol doors<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAdmitting to secret Powers that were her kin;<\/span><\/font>

Adept of truth, initiate of bliss,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

A mystic acolyte trained in Nature’s school,<\/font><\/p>\n

Aware of the marvel of created things<\/font><\/p>\n

She laid the secrecies of her heart’s deep muse<\/font><\/p>\n

Her hours were ritual in a timeless fane;<\/font><\/p>\n

\nSome immemorial Soul in men and things,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nUpraised the earth-mind to superhuman heights.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOverpassing lines that please the outward eyes<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut hide the sight of that which lives within<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSculpture and painting concentrated sense<\/span><\/p>\n

\nUpon an inner vision’s motionless verge,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRevealed a figure of the invisible,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nUnveiled all Nature’s meaning in a form,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOr caught into a body the Divine.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe architecture of the Infinite<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDiscovered here its inward-musing shapes<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCaptured into wide breadths of soaring stone:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Music brought down celestial yearnings, song<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Held the merged heart absorbed in rapturous depths,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Linking the human with the cosmic cry;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The world-interpreting movements of the dance<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMoulded idea and mood to a rhythmic sway<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd posture; crafts minute in subtle lines<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEternised a swift moment’s memory<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOr showed in a carving’s sweep, a cup’s design<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe underlying patterns of the unseen:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Poems in largeness cast like moving worlds<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd metres surging with the ocean’s voice<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTranslated by grandeurs locked in Nature’s heart<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut thrown now into a crowded glory of speech<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe beauty and sublimity of her forms,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe passion of her moments and her moods<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLifting the human word near to the god’s.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMan’s eyes could look into the inner realms;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

His scrutiny discovered number’s law<\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\n

And organised the motions of the stars,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMapped out the visible fashioning of the world,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nQuestioned the process of his thoughts or made<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA theorised diagram of mind and life.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThese things she took in as her nature’s food,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut these alone could fill not her wide Self:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

A human seeking limited by its gains,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo her they seemed the great and early steps<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHazardous of a young discovering spirit<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhich saw not yet by its own native light;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

It tapped the universe with testing knocks<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOr stretched to find Truth-mind’s divining rod;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A growing out there was to numberless sides,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

But not the widest seeing of the soul,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Not yet the vast direct immediate touch,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Nor yet the art and wisdom of the Gods.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A boundless knowledge greater than man’s thought,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A happiness too high for heart and sense<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Locked in the world and yearning for release<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

She felt in her; waiting as yet for form,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

It asked for objects around which to grow<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And natures strong to bear without recoil<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The splendour of her native royalty,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Her greatness and her sweetness and her bliss,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Her might to possess and her vast power to love:<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Earth made a stepping-stone to conquer heaven,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The soul saw beyond heaven’s limiting boundaries,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Met a great light from the Unknowable<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And dreamed of a transcendent action’s sphere.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Aware of the universal Self in all<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

She turned to living hearts and human forms;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Her soul’s reflections, complements, counterparts,<\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

The close outlying portions of her being<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDivided from her by walls of body and mind<\/span><\/p>\n

\nYet to her spirit bound by ties divine.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOvercoming invisible hedge and masked defence<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd the loneliness that separates soul from soul,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nShe wished to make all one immense embrace<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThat she might house in it all living things<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRaised into a splendid point of seeing light<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOut of division’s dense inconscient cleft,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd make them one with God and world and her.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOnly a few responded to her call:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Still fewer felt the screened divinity<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nAnd strove to mate its godhead with their own,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nApproaching with some kinship to her heights.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Uplifted towards luminous secrecies<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nOr conscious of some splendour hidden above<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nThey leaped to find her in a moment’s flash,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Glimpsing a light in a celestial vast,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nBut could not keep the vision and the power<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And fell back to life’s dull ordinary tone.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A mind daring heavenly experiment,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nGrowing towards some largeness they felt near,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nTesting the unknown’s bound with eager touch<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nThey still were prisoned by their human grain:<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

They could not keep up with her tireless step;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Too small and eager for her large-paced will,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nToo narrow to look with the unborn Infinite’s gaze<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTheir nature weary grew of things too great.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor even the close partners of her thoughts<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWho could have walked the nearest to her ray,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWorshipped the power and light they felt in her<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut could not match the measure of her soul.<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

A friend and yet too great wholly to know,<\/font><\/p>\n

She walked in their front towards a greater light,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Their leader and queen over their hearts and souls,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

One close to their bosoms, yet divine and far.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Admiring and amazed they saw her stride<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Attempting with a godlike rush and leap<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Heights for their human stature too remote<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Or with a slow great many-sided toil<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Pushing towards aims they hardly could conceive,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Yet forced to be the satellites of her sun<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

They moved unable to forego her light,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Desiring they clutched at her with outstretched hands<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Or followed stumbling in the paths she made.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Or longing with their self of life and flesh<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

They clung to her for heart’s nourishment and support:<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The rest they could not see in visible light;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Vaguely they bore her inner mightiness.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Or bound by the senses and the longing heart,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Adoring with a turbid human love,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

They could not grasp the mighty spirit she was<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Or change by closeness to be even as she. –<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Some felt her with their souls and thrilled with her;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A greatness felt near yet beyond mind’s grasp;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

To see her was a summons to adore,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo be near her drew a high communion’s force.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSo men worship a god too great to know,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nToo high, too vast to wear a limiting shape;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

They feel a Presence and obey a might,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Adore a love whose rapture invades their breasts;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

To a divine ardour quickening the heart-beats,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA law they follow greatening heart and life.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOpened to a breath is the new diviner air,<\/span><\/font>

Opened to man is a freer, happier world:<\/font><\/p>\n

He sees high steps climbing to Self and Light.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHer divine parts the soul’s allegiance called:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

It saw, it felt; it knew the deity.,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Her will was puissant on their nature’s acts,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nHer heart’s inexhaustible sweetness lured their hearts,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nA being they loved whose bounds exceeded theirs;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Her measure they could not reach but bore her touchy<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnswering with the flower’s answer to the sun<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThey gave themselves to her and asked no more.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOne greater than themselves, too wide for their ken,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTheir minds could not understand nor wholly know,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTheir lives replied to hers, moved at her words:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

They felt a godhead and obeyed a call,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nAnswered to her lead and did her work in the world;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Their lives, their natures moved compelled by hers<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

As if the truth of their own larger selves<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Put on an aspect of divinity<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

To exalt them to a pitch beyond their earth’s.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

They felt a larger future meet their walk;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

She held their hands, she chose for them their paths:<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

They were moved by her towards great unknown things,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFaith drew them and the joy to feel themselves hers;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

They lived in her, they saw the world with her eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSome turned to her against their nature’s bent;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Divided between wonder and revolt,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Drawn by her charm and mastered by her will,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Possessed by her, her striving to possess,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Impatient subjects, their tied longing hearts<\/font><\/p>\n

Hugging the bonds close of which they most

Hastened to engross her sweetness meant for all.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

As earth claims light for its lone separate need,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Demanding her for their sole jealous clasp<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

They asked from her movements bounded like their own<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And to their smallness craved a like response.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Or they repined that she surpassed their grip,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And hoped to bind her close with longing’s cords.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Or finding her touch desired too strong to bear<\/font><\/p>\n

They blamed her for a tyranny they loved,<\/font><\/p>\n

Shrank into themselves as from too bright a sun,<\/font><\/p>\n

Yet hankered for the splendour they refused.<\/font><\/p>\n

Angrily enamoured of her sweet passionate ray<\/font><\/p>\n

The weakness of their earth could hardly bear,<\/font><\/p>\n

They longed but cried out at the touch desired<\/font><\/p>\n

Inapt to meet divinity so close,<\/font><\/p>\n

Intolerant of a Force they could not house.<\/font><\/p>\n

Some drawn unwillingly by her divine sway<\/font><\/p>\n

Endured it like a sweet but alien spell<\/font><\/p>\n

Unable to mount to levels too sublime<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

They yearned to draw her down to their own earth.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd knew by sympathy their needs and wants<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd dived in the shallow wave-depths of their lives<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd met and shared their heart-beats of grief and joy<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd bent to heal their sorrow and their pride,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLavishing the might that was hers on her lone peak<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo lift to it their aspiration’s cry<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd though she drew their souls into her vast<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd surrounded with the silence of her deeps<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd held as the great Mother holds her own,<\/span><\/p>\n

Her greater self lived sole, unclaimed, within.<\/span><\/p>\n
